Jamar subbed off, Good or bad move?

I was surprised, as were the commentary team, that Jamar was subbed off just before three quarter time leaving the inexperienced Maxy to do the bulk of the ruck work. Was this a good move by Roosy? We did fall apart a bit in the final quarter. What do others think?

You're a tad out of touch Bobby, Roos himself admitted it was the incorrect decision.

However that's footy - if the little bloke had come on, sniped a couple, won the game - Roos is a genius.

Excellent move regardless of injury.

If we were going to win it would've been because of dominance in play not stoppages, it was a game of few stoppages.

Jamar hadn't been a positive at the stoppages anyway. Gawn was subbed the week before. I liked that Gawn got more time in the ruck and was able to show a bit more of his marking and his ability to win decisive hit outs (even if he loses more decisive ones than Jamar). And delving in to his fitness is the best way to improve his match fitness/readiness.

Jamar's timing was off on the weekend. I don't know if he was fully fit. Maybe it was a consideration when going for 2 rucks and 3 tall forwards.

It certainly didn't look like he was injured when he came off. He ran off, the steward tried to hand him the vest, he looked absolutely stunned that it was him and in disbelief.

Maybe he wanted to keep Jamar fresh for a big four quarters against Essendon next round. Having a full quarter off would help to achieve this aim.

I was surprised Gawn was played in this game. We should have stuck with another runner, that was the first selection mistake. My thoughts were that they didn't want to mess with Pedersons form by playing him in the ruck but he ended up doing that anyway.

I think Max will be a great ruck man but I don't like him as a forward.

Bad move. I was sure they'd sub Gawn, but my sister noted that Jamar grabbed his knee before going off, so we assumed it was an injury-induced sub. All round poor selection. Shouldn't have played Gawn at all, but Jamar was at least halving the hit outs.

maybe at that point, Roosy realised that we were out of the game, & decided to give the young ones a go, to see where we matched up, Re our future perspective. And to see what the young ones have in the ticker compartment.

Terrible move. Gawn should have been subbed off at half time if not earlier. We were clearly too tall up forward and were getting killed on the rebound with theCollingwood half backs crumbing our forwards with no opposition. Gawn was a liability on the weekend and shouldn't have even been playing - it should have been a straight swap Dawes for Gawn and let Toumpas or Riley play as the sub. At least Jamar was giving us something around the ground as a target to kick to, Gawn is still too raw and doesn't have any real standout qualities other than his height.

Spot on, mate. The problem is, Roos and the FD should have known this was going to happen. It's what I was saying all last week. Maybe they rolled the dice and it backfired? Who knows, but I agree, he certainly should have been subbed at half time.

The thing is I'm not sure we were too tall. Just too ineffectual with forward pressure. They are related but not the same. Let me explain.

Dawes is very good and picking up defenders. Frawley not bad. Pedersen pretty good as well and loves to tackle.

The lack of pressure stems from Gawn, Salem and maybe Watts (he's getting better but has been shocking in the past). So it's not so much that we were too tall but that the remaining forwards couldn't cover Gawn. Replacing Pedersen or Frawley with a small wouldn't have made much difference, it's just we need Gawn out and we need Salem to lift his game.

The other thing is we have to credit Collingwood for dropping men back and running in waves so well. It helps when you have the likes of Lumumba, Young and Seedsman who are really good natural running players folding back in to your defensive 50. We couldn't trap them in our forward half but because they dropped numbers back we had the advantage when it came time for them to use the ball.

I was more upset with the lack of drive from the backline than the forward pressure. But it needs to improve and it's not just Gawn getting fitter and smarter but all the players. Salem had an off day in all aspects and needs a preseason. I'm hoping Kent adds something back in the team. And I'm still waiting to see Jack Watts run down some more blokes with his speed.

I would very much doubt that. Was he subbed before or after the stolen goal? Regardless we were close enough at 3/4 to be in it had we been able to score goals. Surely Roos would not throw in the towel, then or never. Edited June 12, 2014 by monoccular

Last week was the first week since he has been back that I noticed outside his ruckwork he made a big effort to be involved which has been my knock on him since his AA days. Yes ..we need a good tap ruckman.. but we need him to be more than that. We need him to take a few contested marks but also some hit up leads and provide another option. He started to do more of this last week. Pleasing to see.

I thought Roos and the FD would have noted Gawn's inability to apply anywhere near enough defensive pressure the previous week. The same thing happened against GWS. When Gawn plays as a semi-permanent forward, the opposition towels us up. Their back flankers run off him at every opportunity. It's disappointing that the FD failed to foresee this.

Very pleasing.

He has been having a fair dinkum crack since returning to the side this year and I believe his efforts and his overall impact on games are continually improving with his fitness which was clearly an issue early on.

He clunked a few grabs last week which was refreshing. Looks like he has confidence back to jump at the pill again, just like the couple good seasons he had under Bailey (or maybe a season and a half)

Not sure if his fall from grace was due to injury or possibly lack of motivation following his removal from the leadership team and then watching his best bud pack up and head north.

Anyway, its nice to have him back having an impact and looking like he is enjoying his foot again.

In answer to the OP as well, clearly the wrong decision.
