I have to shake my head at the AFL not releasing the compensation result until 5pm or later. This is like the twit recruiters who sit there for the full five minutes wondering who they'll pick at #2. Inept.

Exactly it should be done straight away. Just plug the numbers into the formula.

I think they would find it easier if the formula wasn't pulling a number out of their collective backside. There's very little transparency, and they seem to like to have the wriggle room to chop and change as they see fit.

Higgins got four years at $400k. Doggies received 2nd bad compensation. I would assume Frawley is on 4 years @ 600. Will this get us over the line as 1st band compensation?

I am sad.

Yet again, a senior player has decided after 8 or so seasons that we aren't worth the bother of trying to turn around.

I know we will get compensated handsomely but a bunch of blokes who should have been 1 club players (Beamer, Col, Riv and now Chip) will finish their careers elsewhere like Stan Alves and Greg Wells to get the success they could never get at our club. That being said, this will probably only apply to Riv and Chip as Col is probably not going to get a game in Freo's firsts and Beamer lasted a season and a half at Brisbane.

I don't feel bitterness towards Chip but I feel sad at what our club has become and that we have yet to have our 'Travis Boak' moment

Beamer was a THREE club player.

Pick 3 for a 4 year deal James has really screwed Melbourne over here. I can not see band 1 for a 4 year deal even with 500 to 550 a year

People forget, it's not purely a money related thing.. It's age, player profile, achievements etc. we're losing the only All Australian player on our list.. We'll be compensated fairly, even if 17 other clubs sook about it.

I suspect that if there is a clause for a 5th year based upon performance criteria, it would have to be factored into the total contract amount. Doesn't player age have something to do with it as well?

Age does have something to do with it and I feel the AFL looks at how crucial the player was to the teams line up and they will consider that an AA full back for a struggling club is definitely worthy of a band 1.

An AA Full back that played as a key forward this year.

I would think..JUST !!! ( and yes if its as I suspect really a camouflaged pseudo semi assistance pick )

I was thinking the same ....re that 5th year. Age is very much a factor ( if they want it to be that is .... )

Not quite true, we still have Jamar. But I'm not surprised that no one remebers he was an AA ruck one year.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
