Changes for next week...

Recommended Posts

Ins: Gawn, McKenzie,Garland, Viney & Blease

Outs: Pedersen, Fitzpatrick, Trengove, Bail & Michie

McKenzie really?

We take out guys that can't kick and we add a guy who can't kick.

To me Gawn, Blease, Kent

Out Pederson, Fitzpatrick, Bail

Line Up

Terlich McDonald Georgiou

Grimes Frawley Dunn

Watts N Jones Vince

Kent Howe Blease

JKH Gawn Byrnes

Spenser Tyson Cross

Trengove, Michie, Toumpas, M Jones

Pure speed through our forward line, get Frawley out of Full back and try him as a CHB, Dunn needs to be our play maker from HBF he is the only one that can kick. Trengove has to be in the midfield rotations in the guts not on a wing

Is Viney in the mix ? no mention of him in any injury reports ?

I don't think he was put on the list. he had a couple of head knocks in a row, at training then again at Casey, I think. no muscle strains, so just need to recover his faculties.

he should be close.

sorry if this has been asked but what about Dom Barry or Salem? Where are they. these guys are top 10 picks. Why not give them a go?

I think Salem just hasn't had enough game time at Casey due to the byes and so on. I expert him to play some good VFL footy sometime soon and then get a shot. Kent, Blease and Evans first though.

Don Barry isn't a top 10 pick. He was rated somewhere between late second round and rookie draft. Because he was thrown in to the Hogan deal he will never have an exact draft position but that's not a bad thing. Either way from what I saw of him in the preseason he's still a kid. Doesn't find the footy at preseason level, panics under pressure etc. If he has a good season in the VFL then maybe we can think of a few games for him when he is in form but he's the perfect type to follow Roos' mantra of learning what it takes to be an AFL player.

Barry is average from my view hardly VFL standard at this point.

Salem is a kid please let him have some time with Casey, we don't need another kid battered by playing to early at AFL level.

Play Garland and stick him at FF as the #1 tall. Gives Howe and Fitzy a little bit of support and it will keep him relatively fresh as the game goes on.

It also means we can keep Dunn down back where he belongs and also plays his best footy, while Chip can take Cameron and McDonald/Georgiou can take Patton. We win the midfield battle then we win.

Viney would be handy as well.

His kicking is beside the point in the context of his role, they should bring him in to play on Cal Ward or Treloar, most likely Ward.

Agree. Mckenzie's poor kicking isn't as big an issue as say Grimes not being able to kick. His best games have been handball-heavy and we could use his tagging

Roos talking positional swaps instead of wholesale changes. I'd give this a try:

FB: Georgiou Pedersen Terlich

HB: Howe Frawley Grimes

C: Watts Jones Vince

HF: Bail McDonald Trengove

FF: JKH Dunn Byrnes

Foll: Spencer Cross Tyson

Int: Fitzpatrick, Toumpas Viney Blease

Out: M. Jones, Michie,

In: Blease, Viney

- Howe to the backline as flagged by Roos

- Dunn forward

- Pedersen to FB to play on Giles/Patton

- McDonald to CHF so we have a high work rate and high energy guy forward

- Toumpas to be the 7th defender in the rotation for some run and skills behind the ball

- JKH in to the starting team

Mirrors my changes/thoughts pretty well.

Pederson wasn't terrible down back last week in the second half, and his limitations (whilst fairly large), aren't as easily exposed down back as they are up forward.

I'd keep McDonald down back and throw Garland forward, it's worked before.

JKH should come in, would be a good game to give him a full run on the park. Only alternative is to play someone else experienced and keep him as a sub, possibly Gawn?

Pedersen on Patton - lol

Otherwise some of those changes could work. I don't really like the idea of playing with our back line (Dunn, Frawely, McDonald, Garland, Grimes and Terlich) but I guess due to the lack of forwards/need for change we have no choice. I hope Strauss gets a game this week, Tappy/Jetta are slow but could provide some aggression in the forward line (rather him than Pedo or Byrnes). I really feel for the team - they must lack real confidence due to the lack of talls up forward. Kent must come in if fit.

I can't see Viney or Garland coming in - maybe Gawn. Viney would make a big difference (could play forward pocket with midfield stintsor play as sub).

Ins: Kent, Strauss, Blease, Tappy/Jetta and Gawn/Viney (if fit)

Outs: M. Jones/Bail/Trengove, Spencer (if Gawns fit), Georgiou and Pedo/Fitzy

Pederson on Patton isn't that far fetched, in fact I think they'd be fairly well matched and Pederson will be able to handle him strength wise. If that fails, Frawley or McDonald will be able to rotate.

Kent definitely should come in if fit but why on earth would you want Strauss in? He's done literally nothing when he has been playing and his so called 'elite' kicking is yet to be seen. He's the kind of player that needs to be delisted as we move forward, a player we can't afford to keep waiting on to become a gun. Blease is another and Tapscott too.

I really do hope Roos tries Frawley up forward for at least a quarter. If it doesn't work, he can throw him back onto Cameron and try McDonald up forward.

Tommy Mac can't kick. No use him working hard up the wings and then turning it over on the HFF.

He is better to run with Cameron, who otherwise could have an absolute day out.

FB: Garland - Frawley - Pederson

HB: Grimes - McDonald - Terlich

C: Vince - N.Jones - Watts

HF: Byrnes - Fitz - Blease

FF: JKH - Dunn - Howe

Outs: Michie (have a run to get some touch), Bail, Trengove

I have a soft spot for Strauss - maybe because he was a high draft pick he is harder to let go. Has speed and is a good kick (needs to adjust to AFL level)

He's had long enough to adjust, even with his injuries.

Not having a go at you mate but I am seriously so f#$%ing sick of having a list full of battlers who are just not good enough to do anything at all. It makes me so angry that we are bloody pathetic on the field, but of course it's not their fault. I was never keen on mass culls but I wish we could just cut all of this dead shite from the list and forget about 'waiting for them to develop' when it's been well and truly long enough to see that they are rubbish.

It's quite possible and in some cases probable that it's because of development and the culture at the club at the time they arrived but I don't really care anymore. They're damaged goods and they have to go, else we (the supporters) will be tearing our hair out and becoming manic depressive because of them for the next 10 years.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
