I seriously hate Hawthorn. Any team would be good when every free agent/out of contract player wants to go there and then seems to get there without a drama.

... and that is the fundamental flaw in the free-agency system: The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Once upon time Hawthorn would have to trade a first round draft (e.g. Pick 18) and a decent up-and-coming player (e.g. Bradley Hill) to get someone of Frawley's quality... however, now with this system they keep their first round draft pick, they keep their player, and they get Frawley as well.

With this free agency system, the top-end clubs will have a longer reign at the top because they can constantly top up for nothing if they are smart with their salary cap... whereas the bottom-end clubs will have an extended run at the bottom because they will lose their mature players and have to spend a few years developing freshly drafted kids.

If we end up with pick 1 and 2 there is no way Roos will use them except for trades.....

If this is true, I don't have a massive problem with it, if a club bites and agrees to that price then so be it, and we get compensated above the odds if our form continues as it does currently. This is the world of free agency, it's not going anywhere... we just need to be smart and understand the market.

Also think that if we finish bottom of the ladder then the PP should again be firmly on the table, we have a coach and solid administration behind us, now it's purely the list management that needs addressing, and knowing Roos he is likely to spend one or two of those picks to get other players to the club like he did with Vince and Tyson etc...

That being said I think the other clubs are looking forward to the first 'open' draft for a while.

I can see him using one for a player like Peter Wright... especially if Mitch Clark decides not to continue. But one of the two (hopefully two of the three) would be used to drop down the draft and secure players like he did with Tyson you would think.

i agree, but i reckon Brayshaw and Wright are neck in neck, i'd draft both and trade the other pick for a good player, we have a heap of cap room free, offer Adam trelor 600 k a year and see how loyal he is

Correct. 2 way street and it is time the MFC to do its business this way.

Have to get a Priority this year. Pick 1, 2 and 3. Chip wouldn't be putting a price on his head if he hadn't decided to check out - and who could blame him. Undoubtedly we'll trade one of those picks to GWS again for them to draft a future brownlow medalist.

With all due respect, if he walks, it's Melbourne's doing, not the system's. Why does Melbourne deserve compensation?

If Melbourne were playing footy like what was expected 2-3 years ago, and we maybe where the GC is now, do you think he'd walk for an extra 50-100k? I don't think he would. The club would be more upbeat, I imagine he'd be happier.

The sooner we acknowledge this, the sooner the club can move forward.

dead right, the first thing that Roos said when he walked through the door is " culture is player driven, especially by the leaders" Trenners gave up the captaincy because he knew he needed to become a good player, Nathan Jones took it and gave us the captain we deserved, Frawley puts a bounty on his head and says sorry this is too hard.

I don't mind that as long as somehow we can scrape together a team that's competitive enough to allow development. We can't cop 100 point hidings and not win games all year which is our current state. No one seems to get any better.

McDonald, Garland, Dunn would be the core of the defense and probably supported by either Pedersen or Georgiou. That's not hopeless. But it's not as good as Frawley in there.

My biggest concern is not that Frawley leaves on field it's that we've shown further inability to get anyone to stay loyal and once again had a good player walk out. I don't know how that effects the remaining playing group.

By the way Roos' time at Sydney he was much better at developing a team from 22 able mature bodies than developing young players.

I think it's worth pointing out that Frawley is reported as wanting $800K to leave.

That's not to say he would demand as much to stay at the club with his mates.

I still feel that Dylan Shiel will return to Victoria. GWS dug their heels in last year, but with his contract up in 2015, he may be gettable.

I have learned the hard lesson - the Scully rule applies.

Any player that says that "contract talks are on hold" ( " I want to concentrate on my footy" "I want to see the direction of club" yada yada) is to my mind gone. Saves me the heartache of thinking they might stay and then being disappointed.

I also don't like the idea of Frawley leaving, for the mental impact it would have on the rest of the group.

I think it'd be a crushing blow to guys like Garland and Jones, who keep seeing their mates walk away from the club for successes elsewhere, as their career slips away from them at Melbourne.

Seeing a strong player like Frawley go would really hurt them, I think.
