How lucky are we to have youngsters the calibre of Viney,Toumpas,Hogan,Tyson,JKH,Salem and co.

A bright future ahead.

Viney doesn't need any.

Didnt say he did...what I am saying saying is no one will play unless they are the best at that moment to choose form.

I fully expect young Jack to forge an illustrious carer eating others in the mid field. I dont think he automatically walk up as soon as declared fit as other will be match fit ahead of him..

Viney will play as and when deemed fit and ready by Roos

If we stuff up Jack Viney we may as well fold. His very first game against Port he showed what he can do. A positive against Geelong was that we matched them in clearances and centre clearances. Having a better back up than King in the ruck will give us a bit of a boost. And as much as Geelong missed Selwood within a year or so at least at clearances Viney will consistently show his worth. Especially now we have the 4 new midfielders for support. Viney and Jones were our only clearance winners last year.

He is still a kid in his second year coming off injury.

Has not yet proven he is up for round 1 selection.

In the longer term we should remember we have had numerous players who looked the goods in there first year and are now no longer around.

Do I think this the case with Viney. NO .

However lets not play him before he is ready.

I really wonder sometimes if people around here are paying any attention at all

How can you suggest he is 'not ready'?

He played 13 games last year and we all saw him be totally ready when he was:

Ranked 1st among rising stars in Clearances Per Game

Ranked 2nd among rising stars in Contested Possessions Per Game

Ranked 6th among rising stars in Tackles Per Game

Ranked 10th among rising stars in Disposals Per Game

This was in a side getting flogged with pretty much just Nathan Jones around to help him in the midfield

I agree with you in general but there are some players for which an exception is made and clearly JV is one of them.

I think having a bloke who is part of the fabric of the club and plays harder than anyone else makes everyone walk a bit taller too

I will stop you right there.

There are about 25 in the same boat.

There is nearly three weeks to go and I don't think the 21+1 is settled, Viney is in the mix.

agree totally with you B&C.

It will be interesting if Jack plays against the Hawks. I'd include him at the drop of a hat. Maybe Roo's is saving him for the real stuff knowing the way he throws himself in (even at training) means he'll inevitably get injured...

I think you are missing the point, no one is suggesting he is not a good young player, just that coming off an injury and limited preparation ,may not be ready for round one.

In the same breath that Garland or clark are not ready for round one versus stkilda, which is what this thread is about.

Chillax.

fit is fit

if he is cleared by the medical team he is up for selection on his merits like everyone else

when did this attitude develop in the footy world that you can be 'fit' but not really, and that is some sort of excuse not to play or play poorly

oh that's right the cliche is 'underdone'

FCS it is black and white, you can play or you can't

Posted

He is also coming off a hip injury.

& apparently a concussion?

I think Viney is important as he already has strength & aggression so I'd be surprised if he's not in the side off the bench Rnd 1.

its Hogan I'd hold back for a few.

I see what you are saying but I think it's wrong. Very few players can go from just training straight in to AFL footy. Hence the build up in game time through preseason matches. Not to mention their is a greater injury risk when it happens. So it's unreasonable to expect a second year player to do so.

The notion of being underdone came in when players started running up to 20km a game. When you cover that much distance in game situations the toll on the body is so severe that you need more than just training as preparation.

Hopefully Viney plays this week and the next. Then he would've had 2 hitouts to get himself physically prepared for round 1. It will then come down to form.

On what basis? He was great against the Cats. A solid hit out against the Hawks and he's ready to go. Lucky we have one decent key forward ready no point holding him back now.

I am hoping he does play against the Hawks as I think he will be an absoulte gun this year (provided he stays on the park).

As Mahoney said on the MFC website the Hawks game is followed by the Casey match so some players like Viney, Dawes and Gawn may be able to just play 1 or 2 quarters for Casey (if not up for the Hawks game).

I think all three will be a good chance for the Hawks game - I don;t know if we still have subs but if so they could be used on these three.

To clarify for some

There is fit...ie you are not on injury list or rehab group

And there is match fit. That will get you in the mix to be selected.

Yep - and the docs just say whether a player is uninjured and therefore ok to be selected, should that be the call. It is the role of the conditioning team to determine if he is actually fit enough to play. Viney has had an interrupted pre season and if he doesn't play most of the game against the Hawks and back it up with a couple of weeks of solid training i doubt he'll play round 1.

If he is not fully match fit he's likely to play limited minutes for Casey - to which many would say that if he's fit to play for Casey then he's good to go for the AFL. That might be true of say a big fella like Dawes but not for a mid, particularly a young, developing one.

Viney is hungry and ready for AFL now I'd hate to be the one who told him he would be developing at casey

He is also coming off a hip injury.

I don't believe that any (or many) are suggesting that he will spend more time "developing at Casey", but he may possibly need to spend time at Casey regaining match fitness.

It has everything to do with it - I said if Viney can get his match fitness up to a point that puts him into contention - he is more important in Rd 1 and beyond than Watts and Michie.

I am talking about Rd 1.

If Viney plays against Hawthorn and can show his fitness levels are up to scratch he is only behind Jones, Vince, Trengove, Cross, and Tyson from midfielders picked at selection.

Nowhere have I said that Watts and Michie won't play.

Don't try and compare Viney with Watts and Michie. They play totally different roles. Watts outside Mid, Michie HFF, Viney in and under mid.

Nate Jones, Dom Tyson are the form players of in and under and at stoppages.

Viney is a long way from them AT THIS STAGE. (Round 1)

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50.
