2014 Contracts Thread

FMD - was expecting 2 or 3 years tops.

Clark's terms are conspicuously absent.

I have no desire to wish ill-health or injury on any player but I geez I hope Geelong get bitten on the bum with this.

List Spots Available: 0

Additions: Stretch, Garlett, Lumumba, Frost, ND2, ND3, ND40, ND53, ND83, ND93, ND111,

Actions:

Byrnes retired.

Jetta upgraded and signed till 2016.

Bail, and Riley given (assumed) 1 year deals

Terlich given two years (speculation)

Nicholson and Clisby delisted.

Frawley FA to Hawthorn for ND3.

Stretch acquired in F/S for ND40

Garlett acquired for ND61 and a swap of 5th round picks.

Clark swapped for Lumumba.

Frost, ND40, and ND53 acquired for ND23.

We will need to delist a contracted player to use ND53, and another if we are to use PSD2.

I hope we do delist one player at least, otherwise we would have not got full value in that Frost trade.

Evans, McKenzie, and Trengove would be the most vulnerable.

No wonder he was so keen to come to us not North. Bloody ridiculous.

He'll be 32 by the end of that. I significantly hope its a 3 year deal with an option for the 4th. I can only see him playing well for the first 2 years.

Tappscott must be hanging by a thread.

Clearly Roos rates him higher than Blease and Strauss.

Why is that clear? He is going to be delisted, or we're going to pass with pick 40 in the draft. I know which is more likely, and I really doubt Roos gave Tapscott another few days on the list before throwing him on the heap with the others because he rates him higher.

It would seem we need to get rid of at least two more, otherwise the whole point of bartering for picks 40 and 53 is wasted.

We may need to invoke the devil's alternative used in the past for Newton and others.

Advise two contracted players they are delisted but that their contract will be honoured and they will be taken in the rookie draft.

The danger of this is that another club could draft them prior to our rookie picks, although with the following players, there is no chance of that happening as we are the only club that rates them and their age makes them untouchable as well.

Jordie McKenzie - I don't really see anyone wanting a 24-year-old tagger - albeit a hardworking one.

Matt Jones - Not too many 27yo's who have played just 42 games get another go.

Michael Evans - He's only 22 and given his kicking would have to do a great sales job to a WA club and if they jumped to get him, so be it.

You could easily add Rohan Bail and Dean Terlich to this list and neither is going to be snaffled.

I'm sure there's plenty of others that Demonlanders want to get rid of, but all of them would have a little bit of currency to another club.

So, as it stands, only first 2 picks in ND possible without further delistings: 7 out, 5 in.

???

(sorry, hard to keep track of ...)

That's correct. And I know it's hard to keep track of - I have made the Additions and Deletions list but before that have a simple 'list spots available.'

I have no idea why they have not pulled the trigger on Tapscott yet. They are also likely to delist Evans as he is taking the spot of ND53/DFA/PSD2 and I think we would get a better talent through those mechanisms.

Trengove and McKenzie should also be considered by the club to be delisted and placed on the Rookie List - but only if we catch a big fish in the PSD. Otherwise, it is creating heartache, simply to take a prospect at 53 or DFA.

Deespicable - you may not like Matt Jones but he will not be delisted after being re-signed for two years earlier this year.

Bit of a surprise that we had so few players traded out and only 2 (3 if Tapscott goes) primary list spots. Guess we expected to trade out a few players which didn't happen. I suspect the lack of trade-outs wasn't for lack of trying. If contracted players get delisted we will know our list management hasn't gone to plan.

BTW we can probably take an extra rookie as we are allowed 4 which I'm guessing we will do in case Jack Trengove goes onto the LTI list. So atmo we have 2/3 primary list spots plus 2 rookie spots.

I have published this email a couple of times that was received on 28th August 2014 re: Terlich, Bail and Riley - so there should be no need for confirmation of Terlich being signed until end of 2016:

Hi "X",

Thank you for your email and support of the Club. We appreciate your feedback.

Bail and Riley have re-signed for 1 year and Terlich for 2 years.

Thank you again for your support.

Kind regards,

Georgina

Updated.

6 players confirmed onto the PL, another 5 to come (3 PL, 2 RL) in the next few months.

Roos has seen 18 changes to the PL over his short tenure: Hogan, Salem, Tyson, Cross, Michie, Vince, JKH, Riley, and Hunt in 2014 and Jetta, Lumumba, Garlett, Frost, Newton, Stretch, ND2, ND3, and ND40 to come in 2015.

That's a 45% change in two years for those that wanted a bit of change. Next year might see that jump to 60-65% such is the state of the list...

Or does the club have another DFA lined up?

I appreciate all your efforts in this thread RPFC.

Some interesting names are out of contract at years end - Trengove, Bail, Riley, McKenzie and Cross (His experience this year is invaluable as our young mids get some games this year, a role similar to what Byrnes has could await next year).

I have a suggestion which you may or may not like, having the players age next to their name. It would only need to be updated once a year. Knowing a players age and length of contract is something I think would be of interest to readers of the thread.

Cheers

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
