Massive fan of this trade. Hopefully we'll add in Vince for our compensation pick, and we suddenly have a midfield!

What do you think this (and Michie) means for guys like Matt Jones and Michael Evans?

Matt Jones - learn how to kick so he can play half back and/or add forward and a better balance between inside and outside game

Michael Evans - not a lot. Plenty of room for mids. Just has to keep improving and show his ability as a forward as well. In competition with Kent, Watts, Trengove, Toumpas, Michie. The spots will be there for plenty of them.

What impresses me about this is that is was pretty much on no-one's radar. No dip-stick journalist was given a leak or an inkling of this trade. Both Michie and Tyson were done qyuietly but effectively. No smiling, puffed up MFC rep holding up a jumper at a photo shoot.

I loved Roos as a player - one of the best backmen I have ever seen, who invented the "third man up" role.

I hated him as a commentator/special comments man. He came across as wise after then event and smug.

But I am loving his leadership through this trade period. I can't remember MFC ever entering the trade period like this before, or achieving so much on the quiet.

Loving it.

He suffered a bad knee injury in 2012 which hampered his ability to play this year, but let me tell you this kid is fantastic. Another Oakleigh Chargers boy, who was in the young development squad when I was there he is an incredible inside player. Brilliant inside hands, and whilst not an enormous body a fantastic core that makes him look like he's always in control. Judd-like in the instance of being not enormously big, but looks completely comfortable on the inside.

He would have played one year with Viv Michie too, which who knows if that had any influence.

I too agree I would've loved to keep pick 21.. But to get upgrade 20 to 9, which should see us net Nathan Freeman *touchwood* this is going brilliantly.

Just to recap this is who is coming to our club..

Jesse Hogan....

A ready to fire Viv Michie

Pick 3 Dom Tyson

The 9th best player in the country this year

With potentially Vince, Cross or someone else to come, this team is turning around. And fast.

Agreed - not to mention a fit and firing Clark, Dawes, Trengove and Grimes. An improved Viney and Toumpas.

My faith in Melbourne is growing by the day. I did not have this feeling with Neeld.

Happy with this. Forgetting 'dad's army' , we have added Viney(father son STEAL), Toumpas, Hogan, Michie, Tyson (and Barry) in the last 2 drafts/trades. If we nail pick 9, get a swap for Vince with the compo pick for silver-tail and upgrade Clisby, that's pretty good, I'd reckon. The dad's army were there to take some load off and teach the young'uns about training and playing. And we could still add Cross....or pull something out of left field.....

Oh giddy I am so excited!

Crouch with pick 9 then?

Iron Dom Tyson. :)

Loving this. Definitely a lot better than that Buntine/Bugg fiasco. Him and Viv look to be clearance machines.

Hopefully the compensation allows a crack at Vince but whatever the case, we get another top 10 pick. Things are looking up!

Dom Tyson reminds me of Lenny Hayes, the way he lowers his eyes and nails it on his left - Classy

Better kick than Lenny. Smooth mover.

Saw the highlight reel on MFC website. Things I noted from the small amount of footage:

1. Long left foot kick. Especially the long penetrating kick to Cameron.

2. Goal kicking midfielder. 3-4 goals in less than 15 games. Only going to increase the ratio of goals to games.

3. Strong body.

It means they are going to have to work harder to get a game.

I like both M jones and Pickles, but it's by no means a bad thing. Excellent for the team as a whole

Kent was also written-up as a clearance specialist in the pre-draft bios.

-2 years experience vs a new draftee is very positive for us

-his highlight reel is spectacular, exactly the player we need

-upgrades from 20->9 and 72->53 as a bonus

absolutely magnificent trade MFC

Probably the best thing is we don't have to worry about his size.

Simply BS. Judd in effect cost 3 first round picks. Pick 3, Kennedy (pick 4 previous season), and pick 9 I think. No where near the same price.

Wrong. It was 3, Kennedy (pick 4 in 2005 - largely unproven at the time) & 20 for Judd, 36 & 54.

The initial point was that if the best player in the competition's value was a top 3 pick (or alternatively 3 top 20 picks) why have we given away a top 3 pick (or two top 20 picks) for a largely unproven kid and an overall worsened draft position that may or may not net us anything better than what we could've got at the draft initially?

Yes Tyson was a pick 3 and yes he has had two years in the system but that doesn't equate to pick two - by that logic Jack Watts>pick 1. Pick 20 could've been used on Bernie Vince who would've had far more immediate impact on our midfield in 2014. As I've said previously we'd want to nail pick 9 at the draft.

I bow to Roos & co's greater knowledge of the landscape than I and hope to one day happily eat humble pie and look at today as the day the club really got it right. I'm happy to disagree with others but I don't see this as a great deal for our club presently.

I think Pickles could still potentially be in the first team. He made some solid strides forward last season. Also looks to have added some size to his frame since last time I saw him.

It might sound strange Given M Jones' finish in the B&F and admirable and immediate contribution, but I think from 2015 onward he would be on borrowed time. Maybe as depth. He's no youngster, so we're pretty much seeing the best of him right now.

Entitled to your opinion, but have you watched Tyson play? Have you watched his highlights? He's hard as nails and has the silk to match. If he can stay on the park, the kid is going to be a jet.

His highlight reel for his first 2 years is probably better than anyone on our list

Zac Jones won't be picked at 9 and likely wont last unti 36, or whatever it is. If 20 goes for Vince, I sure as he'll hope Zac doesn't end up at Messendon.

Emma Quale I believe said the other day that we were into Kade Kolodjashnij....he would be one player in line for pick 9

A very Roos-type Malceski-like player.

I like him.

I disagree.

Carlton paid about the same price in the draft for Chris Judd in 2007 who was the best player in the comp. I understand that we get pick 9 as a sweetener but its still a big punt on an unproven kid. I was hoping if we were to trade pick 2 it would be on a proven midfielder at the least. I'm not araldited to my position and will happily eat humble pie if Tyson and pick 9 prove to be amazeballs - however I'm skeptical at this stage.

Wait... What??

Carlton in: Judd

WestCoast in: pick 3, Josh Kennedy (recent pick 4) & pick 20

Vs

GWS in: pick 2, pick 20 & change....... (pick 73)

MFC in: Dom Tyson (recent pick 3), pick 9 & change.......(pick 53)

Not really anything alike, those 2 deals...

Effectively getting Tyson for pick 20 and dropping 6 spaces with our first pick (due to North F/S).

I think the most important thing to discuss is what is his nickname going to be?

Iron Mike?

I LIKE IT!

The way he moves reminds me a lot of Dustin Martin pre draft. Have a look at Martin's highlights for vic country.

Interesting.

Pity he hasn't been able to get on the park much to date but nonetheless this guy can seriously play.

He does. Runs upright, and seems to dodge through traffic with surprising ease.

As I've said previously, if we don't get Shiel, the only other I'd consider trading pick 2 for is Tyson...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
