Cameron Bruce Promoted

Why the love?

Was offered a 1 yr deal, took a 1yr deal at the Dorks for less money than we were offering. Broke down after 1 year and a bit.

No love from me.

Cameron Bruce played a lot of very good games for us, which I appreciate.

Today's football is endemic of players playing at more than one club. Sometimes it is their choice - often it is the choice of their old club.

Loyalty for the jumper is becoming more old fashioned and less common with the passing of each year.

Actually, with three vacant assistant coaching positions we have Junior (GWS), Green (Carlton), Bruce (Hawthorn) and Yze (Hawthorn) in key positions after having being burnt by our club. Perhaps if we had handled the exits of our senior players better we could have kept these valuable indiviudals as part of our club, or at the very least not feeling angry at us.

I'm not saying we could have had all these guys as coaches, but clearly other clubs see value in players we chose to show the exit.

Please bailey was coach at the time nuff said.

Bruce is a quality guy who the MFC burned like other senior players.

He deserved better.

Actually, I reckon it might work out well. Let them gain experience at a successful club and then we can pillage those clubs later. ;)

I would agree with that, but I think all four players, particularly Junior, Bruce and Yze, left the club on very bad terms. Junior was already unwilling to come back this year at least partly due to residual bad blood.

Anyway, its not entirely my point, we let go of 4 players at a time where we desperately needed strong leaders to drive standards citing a need to bring in more youth. As a result these players have had little to nothing to do with the club since. Also many on here questioned the leadership abilities of a couple of these guys (Mainly Green, Bruce and Yze) only for two of them to have strong roles with the reigning premiers coaching panel and the other coaching the midfield of the club which finished 6th. If we had have let these players finish out for one or two years each we may not have been as desperate for experience as to engage in the Rodan/Byrnes experiment and may have been able for them to move straight into development roles. Instead we have to rebuild our list by trading for experienced players and have very little contact with these past champions.

I remember it differently.

Offered less money, but 2 years at Hawks versus our 1 year offer.

I don't blame him too much.

Junior's received treatment & the contract offer would've given him a severe wakeup call that his career was quickly coming to an end, and I think the smart option was to get involved in a different organisation with a different culture.

Smart career move really. Don't know where he'd be if he'd have stayed at MFC.

Cannot remember Yze ever being considered a leader.

If he kicked 4 and his opponent 3 then it was a good day.

I loved watching Yze play but the general vibe was that he was slack.

1 year deal with an option for a second year if he played the required games wasn't it? But the increased intensity at training and in games at Hawthorn ended up with him breaking down.

In some ways he was gutless just like he became on the field. The club had already seen that letting go Junior might have been a mistake and that if his body held up he would've got the second year. Not to mention he waited until after Junior was prematurely retired to then leave. I bet if the club knew Bruce was going at the end of 2010 they might have kept Junior

Yze was not even in the same slackness league as our current list :)

cam Bruce in my opinion is a club champion who basically had to step up a notch and did so when Scott Thompson left. If Guerra hadn't injured him round 12 ish 2004 he might have won a brownlow. He was way ahead.

cam took a two year deal at the hawks I'm 99% certain?

The bold section ( Jnr excepted) was the problem. Stack Green, Bruce and Yze up against strong leaders like Selwood Hodge. Not even in the ball park.

As for Green coaching the midfield of Carlton, I think you'll find he is/was nothing more than the development coach. Sim to Satterly at Melb.

I disagree, (with the exception of Yze who Biffen correctly states was not a leader, however it would have been good to not dump him so ungraciously as to lose his presence around the club) I think Bruce is a quality football brain and got the most out of himself and had we not been so stubborn on his deal, would have stayed, or at least would have been willing to walk in the door of our club. Green did the best he could in a bad situation, he may be a development coach, but many quality coaches are in development (See Gavin Brown at North), also I would have rathered see Greeny lead for another year than Gillies, Rodan, Pedersen or Byrnes enter our list. It was a bad decision.

One of the major reasons for our current predicament was our inability to correctly assess the value of our senior players. So much so now we are willing to trade the 2nd highest draft pick just to gain it! Not to mention our disastrous intake of experienced players last year. We got rid of quality people too early, didn't recognise the value of them instilling high training standards and setting the example and we are now reaping the consequences. The Junior decision was the worst, but it was part of a general philsophy that palmed off many senior players who are now seen by quality clubs to have value. It astounds me that after the past 6 years people are still defending our list management decisions. Clearly they failed!

Good on him, he was a good player for us. I was always surprised at his stats after the game because I often walked away with the impression he didnt get much of the ball but then ended up with 25 touches with a high efficiency. His positional play was great. It is disappointing that we have been unable to retain within the club quality blokes like Jnr, Bruce and Green.

There is no doubt we culled too many too early burng a few bridges on the way, to rely on what have tunred out to be poor draft picks to take up the slack that as youngsters were cruelled by long term injuries. Add in poor player development and the exodus of a few free agents in recent years and you have the recipe for the mess we are in now.

Cam Bruce was the best midfielder in the league for a period at the start of the 2004 or 2005? premiership season.

We would literally die for a player of his calibre now.

Thats what I remember. he procrastinated on his deal and after we sent Junior packing, Bruce bailed. Did us or Junior no favours.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
