2013 Player Review - # 43 Rory Taggert

Demonland

Recommended Posts

If I could trawl back a couple of years, draft time, I am sure I would have found the usual "this guy is / will be a real gun" again and again - like we heard of Morton, Maric, Sylvia, McLean etc etc etc

If Roos keeps him on the list, and Rory actually makes it onto the field, I will look forward to seeing if he turns out to be even a "good ordinary player"

Agree

It's the only thing supporters of a bottom 4 team can think of when new players are recruited into their team .......Hope

We have seen him a couple of times at casey and thought he looked okay. Has a good frame which could do with some building but he is only 20. Maybe Mr Roos thinks he can do something with him. We live for hope!

I'm going to be honest and say I've never seen him play in Casey game, so take this with a grain of salt.

My observation from afar is that any midfielder on the list who is not a complete spud would have picked up a game this year. The fact he didn't can't be about his age, because all our young draft picks played consistent games in the ones.

If Magner can't get a consistent game and he is a spud tearing up the VFL, I just don't see how this guy will ever get one.

Yell out if I'm off the mark, but I'm backing myself to be pretty close...

The fact he wasn't played in the midfield is annoying. Why select a mid in a draft and play him almost exclusively in the fwd line?

I hope to see you proven wrong.

Mr Roos, sir? (Wonder what he will see and do?)

I hope I'm wrong too! I'm sick of hearing about guns who languish in the VFL and then quietly fall off the back of the list. Believe me. I was just theorising about where Taggert is at, with the qualifier that I haven't seen him play a single game!

I'm a big fan of his size and he seems to have a bit of goal kicking nous. I'm hoping Roosy can turn him into a solid contributor in the middle, where we could really use his bulk.

Good size and skills. Strong overhead and one of the best kicks at the club. Not confident enough in his own abilities yet and hasn't had a full preseason. Good development could see him really come on. Rory is 50/50 at the moment, if he tips the right side of that he will be a player.

Stick with him. Essendon were going to get rid of Watson but persisited with him even though he couldn't kick and was slow. Now look at him. just a really good strong footballer.

A big body with foot skills is what we need. Let him learn the game and he could be an extremely valuable asset.

As someone said though, we have to jag one don't we?

Definitely keep.

Hasn't had a chance due to injuries (like Evans).

Has showed a lot when not injured.

Has height (188cm), muscle and a good kick - something we need in the midfield.

Seems to be able to play well forward and in midfield - but needs to improve endurance.

If we want to ever be a good club we need to find some gems in the rough and he is a perfect candidate.

You really need to watch him play, he has poise with the ball in hand and uses it well. Consistency has been a problem partly in my opinion because he has spent too much time as a permanent forward this year. The standout game that I've seen from him was at Box Hill last year playing as a mid. He has a lot more going for him than Evans in the size and skill department and hopefully he gets time to develop under Roos.

Don't forget his five goals late in the season. Should have had a call-up after that game, but for some reason Craig didn't like him (I still subscribe to the theory that he ran over Neal's cat at some point) and he was left in the reserves.

Probably discount the goals a bit against the easy beats of the comp but you've still got to kick 'em...he has the potential to surprise next season but I don't think he is contracted yet.

The fact that he hasn't played yet is no big deal on my eyes, frankly we have played kids for no reason these last few years and have ruined their introduction to AFL football and their confidence as a consequence.

Get his body right and teach him how to play a role and we will see what 2014 holds for him. We still have a number of kids so he isn't helped in that regard.

I understand why yourself and others may have come to that conclusion but in my eyes, it was part of the 'change' Neeld and co were trying to bring. All strong sides have fantastic development programs in place and I think for Rory, they wanted him to be playing consistently well in the VFL before he got his turn because he's had injury interruptions and obviously hasn't played a game. RP is right in saying that we've been guilty in the past of gifting games, and as we have come to learn years down the track, it's a recipe for disaster when you add in all of the other negative factors that have contributed to where we are.

Even though I wanted him to play by seasons end, I'm now glad he didn't play. I hope he's hungry for next year. He played some pretty solid games for Casey toward the end of the season and from what I saw he looked pretty confident out there by years end. And that's what we want. We want our kids to be confident at the level they're playing before they're given games.

I believe Rory possesses some really handy qualities and I reckon if we blood him at the right time, he'll be a player. I reckon it's all mental with Rory. Similar to Watts.

Saw the game against Box Hill last year and I like Big Kev, I was seriously excited. A couple of games later and he was out for the rest of the year. The Kid has had some serious injuries to overcome and this has clearly hampered his development. He also played well in his one and only NAB cup game against PT Adelaide earlier this year. I think the idea of playing him forward for most of this year was to primarily manage his back problems . I believe the kid has a real upside that its worth persisting with him for at least another year.

I thought he got into the squad (of 25) for one game but got injured so was ruled out? Injuries have been the main reason we haven't seen him at seniors level. I'd like to see him given a chance

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
