The Swans have one of the most impressive young list of up and coming midfielders in the competition, with the likes of Hannebury, Mitchell, Parker, Jetta and Rohan coming through to support the likes of Jack, Kennedy and McVeigh. The signing of Tippett along with their recent premiership will create salary cap pressure and make them vulnerable to losing some of these potential stars. Could Roos tempt one to come to the Dees? I'd love to see a Hannebury, Mitchell or Parker in a Melbourne jumper.

Mitchell wouldn't go especially after being recruited via F/ son.

I always wanted Rohan after seeing him play in the TAC. I don't think he would leave, he owes the swans a lot.

I actually think Parker has the potential to be the best of the lot. In two years time he could be commanding $400k plus a year. Perhaps we could get in early.

i can't see any of them leaving anytime soon because of the great culture at the swans. i think they'd be willing to not get paid what they might be at other clubs to stay a part of that culture.

Salary cap pressure never squeezes out first string midfielders. It squeezes out Blake Caracella, Justin Blumfield and *cough* Chris Heffernan.

If you're really lucky you might shake out a player like Craig Bird, but honestly I can't see the Swans having that much of a problem with the cap. Enough work goes in to salary cap management these days that clubs almost never back themselves in a corner with unsustainable large contracts.

But like Geelong, I reckon these players are prepared to be paid below their value just to stay at a club that functions so well, and does not drop out of the 8 when it is rebuilding. It would need to be family reasons/homesickness etc.. to prise them out of the Swans.

The answer to the lament about not having players of the ilk of Hanneberry, Parker and many others of that ilk is to get decent recruiting people on board in the first place.

Both Hannebury and Parker were well within our reach at the drafts when they were available for selection but our recruiting people chose others.

The further we move away from this post tanking, Bailey/Neeld, Prendergast, Schwab, AFL lead assistance era I feel the player recruiting and develpoment could be the worst part of that period even with the fines, and AFL needing to assist the above is like a stone in my shoe.

no, thats not what I'm saying.

We've continually allowed our skilled player types to do the skilled things alone, without putting the body on the line every time its required... the old adage, "When its you turn - You Go".

we haven't adopted that Motto, for at least the past 10 years, Re our development of our kids. so when the likes of Neita & Whelan & Jnr finished, so did our successes.

So if we pickup an Aish,,,, or a Stretch next year, we must make them learn to do the hard things, as well as the skilled things. The game isn't full of specialists anymore, like full forwards or half forward flankers... its not a Chessboard anymore, complete with all the Chess pieces.

Its a Chinese-checkers board, or a Drafts-board if you like, with nearly all mids. and as such, the players have to perform ALL the skills.

I agree with what you say about mids but MFC has drafted skinny kids with talet for too long overlooking the less polished but brawny types who can actually get the ball and compete at this level. Sometimes that hunger and attack on the ball can be taught a but most of the time it is innate.

my goodnes me, you really can't read my writing at all.

Morton I never wanted at all, in fact I wanted either Lachie Henderson (CHF) from that draft, or Dangerfield sounded interesting to me.

Bennell is Not the type I would have drafted at all, in the first place. Cook I knew nothing about & is the perfect example of what no to recruit.

Blease was one of my likes from that year at our 2nd Rnd, along with Zaharakis,, and Shoenmakers, who went to the Hawks. My main P1 interests were Watts & Rich followed by NicNat. for 2008.

I prefer the harder players to watch & to recruit... this is what I was saying... but when you do recruit the more skilled type player they have to be blooded in the VFL for a long period of time to build their bodies & confidence, & they don't get games until they are prepared & willing to do their share of heavy work.

So yes they can learn to play a harder style of play as long as it is done from the start in a competition level they're suited to as they learn. but there is no substitute for picking the right types up front.
