Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Both these guys were taken well ahead of when the "experts" predicted.

We kept trying to pick diamonds from amongst the gravel.

To do that you have to be very good as a recruiter.

Clearly we were not that clever

You know, if you read what I said, I agreed with that.

Their premature selection aside, they were still talented players taken onto our list. Take their draft pick allocation out of the equation - we brought in Cook, who had the talent of a pick 30-odd, and Gysberts, who had the talent of a pick 20-odd.

Within three years they're both gone.

That's where the development argument comes into it.

Sorry I don't agree with you.

If you pick poorly there is no amount of development that will turn a Cook or Gysberts into a good player.

Our biggest problem over the last decade has been poor selection.

It is very difficult to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

I can't even be bothered to argue with you.

Yes, I understand his argument.

His support for his argument is that Wines played well in a final.

That argument is ridiculous, which is what I posted above.

Don't you get it? I apologise I know you are a little slow.

Hey Titan are you watching now

I was listening to a recruiter on the radio yesterday, he was talking about how they evaluate players. One of the methods of separating players was to project how they saw each player in 3-5 years time. We haven't even come close to giving Toumpas that sort of grace, particularly considering he was coming off a limited preseason due to injury and are comparing him to a ready made player. At this stage we've not considered the merits of their scope for improvement.

But in reference to the early calls for Wines, at the time I remember a lot of talk about how he was good mates with Viney and wanted to play for the Dees. I wonder how many people actually saw both players in action, and didn't just base their choice on some sort of romantic notion of getting in Wines because he's a highly rated player, likes the Dees and is Viney's best mate.

There's the possibility we did get it wrong, but it's too early to call at this stage.

Listen to the drums MFC doesnt have 3 to 5 years Geeus!!

From what I've seen Wines has had an average night. He's been caught a lot with the ball and the stats say no effective tackles??(can't be right). He's had a massive year and is going to be a great player as will Jimmy T. As with Watts lets revisit this in 2-3 years.

how do you know Wines will be a star? He could become a Rhys Palmer or develop the exact same way Daniel Rich who has been slow in development since his debut year. Both will be good players but your out wack

Not sure who will be better in the future. There does seem to be a fair bit of premature adulation on here for Wines. Thought his second half was pretty disappointing.

I didn't say star as I think that tag is thrown around to often. I said I think he will be a great player. No I'm not a clairvoyant I'm wrong plenty of times. I haven't seen all the games he played this year but from what I have seen there has been good and bad. We know he has good disposal. Because we've been down for so long we want all our draft picks to impact games straight away. Geelong and Collingwood have built environments that allow young talent to come in and find their feet.

After watching the replay will Wines think he should off shot the handball out rather than take on the pack? I'm not p##sing on Wines as I said I think he will be a great player. He's only 18, Port has had a amazing year and set the bar for themselves.

And, of course, had the picks gone the other way, Jimmy the Greek may have played finals tonight, and may have done ok, whereas Wines would have played all year in the worst team in living memory.

Or maybe you are suggesting that Wines could have lifted us to finals, and Jimmy would have dragged Port down into the doldrums :-))

It is an unanswerable question.

Perhaps Roos will start by not lumping the weight of the world onto 18 year old rookies and actually allow them to develop organically, rather than expecting them to be Chris Judd in their first year and giving up on them when they aren't.

Let the kid have some pre-seasons into his body before you declare him a failure.

Did anyone read the Robbo article on the Wines family in today's Hun? Ummm. Mum is very vocal. Hated the Draft day experience. I reckon there would be about 1000 families who would trade places. Ollie sounds like a great bloke though. Wish him all the success in the world in his career.

Wines is like a number of the small type players like Daniel Rich and Rys Palmer who are strong early and come on very quickly but don't get much better as they get older.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
