Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

So in his presser after being appointed, Bomber Thompson said he and Neil Craig will be focusing on training up Simon Goodwin to be a senior coach. Said that he had all the skills, and that they've promised to really develop him. Could be an option in 12 months time if we don't find anyone now.

The critical point is that we cannot compromise our standards by rushing to make a decision now, from a list of candidates who don't quite measure up. If we can't nail the right Senior Assistant now, then we must wait until we can, because the long term interests of the Melbourne Footy Club depend on it. PJ and PR know this.

Allison is fwd line coach, Matthews midfield line coach.

Are you sure of this?

I thought Matthews was going to be working with the backline in a development role.

Have to agree, I haven't heard any comment about Matthews or Alison's roles,... regardless, we still are some coaches short at this point.

Can't remember where exactly, but I've read both those things, probably on AFL website - Allison fwds, Matthews midfield.

NB. I wouldn't believe it or report it unless it was from some sort of semi-reputable source.

I haven't read it on bigfooty or here, or else I would have dismissed it out of hand.

So lets assume Allison up front, Matthews in middle , Rawlings - defence

Supposedly Stone to development...Frosty apprentice role ?

not much left

This is what I have garnered, so I am assuming we have:

Senior Coach: Paul Roos

Senior Assistant:

Forwards: Mids: Backs: J. Rawlings
Dev Forwards: B. Miller Dev Mids:Allison Dev Backs: Matthews

Which means we need at least a Midfield Develoment Coach ( If Matthews is the Mids coach and not backs) or possibly both as I have assumed. Or possibly we need a Development Backs coach. As well as senior assistant.

We have a minimum of two vacancies still, three if the senior assistant was to be a non-line coach role. I hope the club completes the coaching line-up soon. Purely for peace of mind.

Edit: Updated based on the MFC article regarding the senior coaching vacancy.

Well considering in 2013 we had 2 on each line, plus Craig and Neeld, we are still several short. We only have 5 confirmed coaches at this point with Stone a rumour. If Roos is serious about developing this list then he needs support to do this. Our current coaching group is very thin on numbers and experience (other than Roos)

Looking at other club websites (and I feel dirty having to do so...) But most have 9-10 names in their coaching groups, sure that often includes the VFL coach and the head of their coaching department, but Roos has that role with us as well as being the senior match day coach...

I would be hoping to see 2-3 more coaches added to our team before 2014 starts,...

Craig was an effective luxury..there to supplement Neeld...

It was thought we were light on in the FD so we went bezerk employing "line assistants" , high end water boys, and boy scout brigades to tie and untie boots.

WOW big success all round !!

often you have 2-3 stat and IT ppl and we have them.

Possibly all we are really missing, ( if at all atm ) is the bloke that slots in just under Roos and above the other 3 .

So succession plan on ice for 12 months! They have someone in mind or have to find someone else!

Yeah looks like we weren't able to get the person we were after so we will wait for other good options to arise.

If we can't get a successor this year (or don't think the best candidate is available just yet), the Ling appointment at North could be a blessing.

Gives him a part-time grounding for coaching, exposure to the job to develop a hunger in him, and he is a part-time leadership consultant, rather than a line coach, meaning the successor role is a clear unambiguous promotion, making him ripe for poaching next year regardless of the length of his contract.

I'd be amazed if any club has only 5 coaches heading into a season.

Great, we don't rush we start to show that we are capable of playing finals Roos gets the finals bug and we have him for 4-6 years. We wait till next year we find the right candidate we will still most likely get Roos to do his full 3 years.

Yes nice call. But fairly unsure about Ling after only one year in the gig! I didn't think he was an assistant coach at Norf though either?

Has anyone heard where Bassett is going?

Could he finish up at MFC?

Would seem to have done great work at Norwood and may be worth a shot at an assistant coach position.

Yes interesting that; to pursue other coaching opportunities, wonder where?

Well, guess I should have looked for the Gav Brown thread.

Collingwood. He'll take over from Buckley, when he gets sacked mid season 2014. :P

It would seem we only have one assistant and 3 development according to the successor article, I updated the above post accordingly, so definately 2 vacancies.

I am hoping that we'll be told soon that he's been hired. If I were to make a checklist of everything we need in a coach he'd tick every box. I am absolutely amazed that the club hasn't been chasing him, if not for the senior assistant role then for one of the line coaching spots. To me it just says that despite all the talk we are still not being run properly at the top level. A coach of his abilities should have been right in them mix from the word go.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
