Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Agree on Spencer, he is actually a very good tap ruckman, which helps us enormously in the middle.

Gawn has a bright future, no doubt, but as a centre tap ruckman, he is pretty ordinary right now. There is a direct correlation between Spencer's good ruckwork and our best midfield performance in a long while tonight.

I thought Spencil was good. He and Gawn provide for a bright future in the ruck division.

Unfortunately for Davis, he will have to put up a very good case for another AFL game. Completely out of his depth.

Yeah, but he should have swapped with Watts in the 2nd half.

It was a bit hard for someone who's played 2 years of footy in the backline, to come out and play as a forward in one's first game.

4/76 Smith out.

The good is that on another day he might have kicked 5.1. Yes, today it hurt, but next week with his kicking boots on he could win the match for us. We have been crying out for a small forward who can hit the scoreboard for years.

I do agree that Blease should be the answer, but he has consistently failed to deliver after that outstanding five goal haul. I'll take Byrnes ahead of him for the moment.

Can we get Betts?

Have to agree on Spencer, you were the only one to have mentioned him so far. He one nearly every knockout and Jones and Viney were the benefactors. He also tries bloody hard. I like him.

Davis is a backman, why play him forward. Should have been swapped for Watts or Dunn.

But he didn't I am so sick of some people kissing players asses his job is to kick goals he is an experienced player who gets paid to kick goals I dont care that he got the chances big whoop he gets paid to convert them. Also if he handballs to someones feet again I will kill him

Big woop, he got chances? You have seen our side this year, right? And you've seen how we've fared for small forwards in the last 4 years? It is "big woop".

Up until this match Byrnes had kicked 11.5, including 3.1 against GWS. He has kicked 111.88 for his career. I'm not "kissing his ass" or declaring him the second coming of Christ, but he is a decent small forward, who creates opportunities to score, usually kicks more goals than points, and clearly had an off day. He certainly isn't the devil incarnate as is being made out by you and others.

Dear AFL if u put on a melbourne match at the same time as a collingwood game can you please make sure we are playing in melbourne so I can attend. I dont have foxtel so my parents and I went up to our local club to watch it. We got a little tv while the swans and pies game was on the big tv. We were boxed in by collingwood fans who were so noisy because they won which is fair enough but it wasnt a great night when we lose and the pies win.

Anyway back tot he game. Great job on ablett, watts when he gets the ball rarely wastes it. Byrnes if we converted them into goals we wouldnt be bagging him. In fact we would be praising him and yes he missed a lot but other players had chances to kick goals. But I did wonder why watts was played back when we virtually had no forward line. I thought this would have been a great opportunity for him to play forward and lead for the ball. Should have made him the target and made him play

Anyway considering the result last time we played GC that wasnt to bad.

I think he would get a bit bored in our forward line.

You will probably find him rapping down in the goal square with his shorts down to his knees

i agree 100% with the posters who said Watts should have been moved forward in the last when we were a chance to win

Davis to the backline

a very obvious move not made, and thats why Craig wont coach us in 2014. Still love him though just not as coach

And it would be the best value for money entertainment you'd get watching Melbourne play.

Never thought I would say this but today Watts was really our on-field leader.

Ahead of Jones and Viney? Don't think so YD. He did however have a decent game. His disposal and decision making stuck out like a sore thumb, as usual.

What u on young dee?

He was really the only one with a presence on the ground - telling players what to do.

He was that big body and the player that everyone wants to get the ball to because he always makes the right decisions.

Hardly even worth replying to ridiculous hyperbole like this, but both Grimes and Trengove had more possessions than Gary "best player in the AFL" Ablett, and across town, they also had more than Nick Maxwell and Kieren Jack (Swans co-captain).

I think Viney and Jones are leaders because they lead by example but I see them as so focused on their own game that they don't really have that poise and time to tell others what to do.

Also those big bodied guys like Dawes and Clark are always looked up to by the rest of the team (from my experience)

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
