Did anyone else witness the Maclure & King segment of AFL 360 last night? It was hilarious!

They got on to the subject of who should coach the MFC next year, and raised the idea of appointing a senior coach, along with one or two junior coaches who could be mentored for a couple of years before one of the junior coaches took over.

Mark Robinson pushed Maclure for suggested names of people who could slot into that scenario. When Maclure couldn't come up with any names, Robinson chimed in with the comment that maybe Maclure & King should take the gig. He went on to say they would be "Dumb" & "Dumber"...! It was hilarious, as both Maclure and King got rather hot under the collar about that.

Robinson quickly blurted out that he didn't mean that King was "Dumber", rather that Maclure was "Dumb & Dumber"...! Maclure got even shirtier about that, and it wasn't long before the segment was brought to a hasty close.

It was great entertainment!

Those may be the truest words Robinson has spoken in some time.

You mean Maclure.

I also thought it was very embarrassing for us, when they all agreed who would want to coach Melbourne.

They even put up stats about Cameron and his goals in his first 32 games and listed a lot of former players and their goals in the same amount of games, yet left out the record holder Allen Jakovich, who kicked 150 goals in his first 34 games compared to 79 by Cameron in 32 games.

I can't wait for this club to be successful so I can stick it to several people.

I didn't see it but isn't it usually Mark Maclure on with David King on a Wednesday?

Not that I think much of the two of them but at least King is trying with his analysis, Maclure spurts nothing but crud.

As for whether we should go for a coach and a designated chief assistant to take over the role I'm not sure we should be the obvious. It just ends up biting you in the back in regards to when the assistant takes over like Buckley and Malthouse.

I do however, feel we need to improve the quality of our assistant coaches as well as our senior coach. So I'd like to see something like Roos appointed and Adam Simpson comes over from Hawthorn on no guarantee of the senior job but can be mentored by a different senior coach to increase his own job prospects. If it works out like a Roos-Longmire hand over then that would be great.

Redleg I hope you have plenty of patience.

Of course he has...he's a Melbourne supporter.

I am way more stupid than patient LDC

Any sane person would have moved on from the MFC long before half a century of crap took place.

Yes, I think there's a PhD out there for someone who can explain why otherwise sane people (including even you, Old Dee) put up with this rubbish for so long.

For me it was either the MFC or the Hare Krishnas.

Maclure makes a decent clown, but he's just about the furthest thing from an expert you could find. No research and no understanding of the issues. Just says the first thing that comes into his head without any forethought.

Transcript below (minus the bit about "dumb and dumber" which came directly after):

Maclure: Why Rocket? Why Rocket? Does Rocket become the be all and end all of the coaching thing? Is it..does it..he wants to coach? Why does he want to coach? Does he want more money? Is it about money? Cause if it's about money he shouldn't do it.

Gerard: No, Rocket's driven to coach. And if the field is three..

Maclure: Does he want to pay more? Does he want to get more pay than he's getting now? Because they haven't got any money.

Gerard: Well they've got as much money as the AFL has got. They've got an open chequebook to sign whatever they want to sign.

Robbo: Why not Rocket?

Maclure: But why Rocket?

(Maclure and Robbo start talking over one another for a while)

Maclure: if he wants to do it for money, he shouldn't do it.

Robbo: You're only assuming he wants to do it for money.

Maclure: Well okay, let's offer him a contract that's low. See how much he wants to do it.

(silence, possibly just letting the stupidity sink in..)

Robbo: Do you think that there's a shortage of senior coaches going around?

Maclure: You think there's a shortage of senior coaches.

Robbo: I'm asking you.

Maclure: Don't get angry at me.

Robbo: Don't throw everything back at me when I'm asking you a question!

(some joking around about Robbo thinking he is Mike Sheahan)

Gerard: Who do you think it should be?

Maclure: I don't think we should look at the obvious, sometimes I think we should look at the not so obvious around the place.

Robbo: Well give us a name.

Maclure: I haven't got one in my back pocket.

Robbo: Well don't make statements about non-obvious people when you haven't got any!

Maclure: Oh, you getting upset darling?

Yep I just don't understand why they have Maclure on. They have David Parkin do league teams where he pretty much reads out the teams and comments on some players returning or getting dropped which is very basic analysis yet they hire Maclure who offers very little. Robbo should've asked him why he comes on AFL 360? Is that just for the money?

He should've got more heat for comparing Jobe and Lance Armstrong, that was a monumentally stupid thing to say.

Yeah that was a prime example of how his brain works. I think he fancies himself as the Kyle Sandilands of the AFL.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
