Word is over here in the West is that Woosha has split with his wife and he's doing it pretty tough. That's the reason he seems a bit indifferent about the whole coaching caper right now.

On the bright side, a move to the East coast and a handy salary after his missus has cleaned him out might be a possibility.

That makes sense, as he has appeared very strange in his press conferences lately.

He'd probably be OK, but given the chance of getting someone who has scaled the mountain and someone who hasn't it's an easy choice for me.

Also, whether he likes it or not, he's been tarnished by the fact he's been at the club for 18 moths while this train wreck has been unfolding before ours and his eyes. it hurts his chances.

in fact, I'm virtually certain he won't be considered.

The 14 pages of comments have been some great reading...and time wasting at work :D

TBH reckon any of Roos, Eade or Choco will be great for the club.

You get instant credibility that you don't need to earn if you're an untried coach.

You get instant experience at different clubs as a head coach.

And with the crap that has gone on, you'd hope you get instant buy in from the players.

Landing Roos would be the equivalent to when the Blues got Judd and how it completely turned around the perception of the joint. Of course winning the occasional game would be nice but we urgently need a positive future - sorry for stating the bleeding obvious.

This is my only real concern re Roos is thats it might be a case of getting him over the line , but Id rather have someone running to it, really wanting it.

I dont think theres really a lot between Chocco and Roos anyhow.

Forget Clarkson. If you were him and could stay at a list you'd built and a strong premiership winning outfit, or go join a basket case what would you do ? I wouldn't even take Melbourne's call.

First preference would have to be Roos. He's won a flag, helped develop the club with the best culture in the AFL, and was the mentor to two of the best coaches in the AFL in Lyon and Longmire.

If I couldn't get Roos I'd target Williams. He's scaled the mountain with a poorly resourced club and won a flag. He's known for being a great development coach. Forget assistants that have a record of great development, clearly being at the helm is a world away from taking directives. Gillard, by all reports, was a terrific deputy, but will go down as the Prime Minister with the worst judgment in history. Being a good assistant doesn't mean you'll even be competent as a senior coach.

Mark Williams has a winning rate of 55.47%, which is excellent, especially at an under resourced club.

He'd been at Port for 12 years. I reckon it's reasonable that his time was up.

I reckon his tactical side would be fine, but there are always others to help in this regard. Coaching is mainly about what happens in the 7 days during the week and less to do with what happens in the 2 hours in the box on game day.

You don't play off in 2 grand finals and win one at an under resourced club if you fail with the tactical side of the game.

Obviously he has some skills in this regard, my query is more about whether the modern game has moved beyond him. Neither I nor you know that though, it is just something I think the MFC will have to consider.

I agree the support staff we get would be just as important as the senior coaching gig. Will be interesting to see who they chase.

I think Roos' comments should reassure anyone worried he is going to take up the role just for the cash. "In some ways it's the great coaching challenge, but you have got to be thinking like a coach to take it on if you are going to do that role."

Sounds to me like he understands there's no point taking the job if his head and his heart aren't in it. He's a smart operator and wouldn't want to tarnish his reputation.

Always had a lot of respect for Roos and he's my preferred choice by the length of Hwy 1. I actually think we're a reasonable chance to get him, maybe 50/50 atm. A month or 2 ago I wouldn't have given us a snowballs chance of securing him but now that the AFL are involved everything has changed, they usually get what they want.

If Roosy does knock us back I'd be pretty happy with Chocko. As others have said he's tasted the ultimate at an under resourced club and in my opinion has a better track record in his relationships with his players than Eade, who is famous for peeling the paint off the walls with some of his sprays.

I don't think there is any chance at all that Clarkson, Matthews or Worsfold will be in red and blue next year.

This is part of the coach argument that doesn't sit well with me.

Williams, Roos, Malthouse etc. didn't scale any mountains. They were at clubs that won premiership/s.

It takes a lot more than a coach for success and its important to acknowledge that when selecting a new coach.

The coaches who are perceived as the best are not just good coaches but good career planners.

The perfect case in point is Ross Lyon - He jumped off a sinking ship. He's a good coach but he knew that he had no chance of success with St.Kilda, so he moved on.

If he had stayed, he'd likely be another coach on the scrap heap right now.

We should be looking at coaches that have achieved in the situation we want them to achieve in. Rodney Eade fits the bill - has had success with two troubled clubs.

Anyway, the example is not important. I'd hate to see us neglect the right person because we were intent on getting a 'premiership' coach, who might not have the experience of helping drag a side out of the rubble.
