I don't think anyone wants to get rid of him because they (we) think he's rubbish. It's more about the fact he has currency and is surplus to our needs up forward. If he can develop into a genuine midfield role I'd prefer to keep him, but I don't see it - he's more of a forward flanker type, something we have an over-abundance of.

All I hear on here is CURRENCY....."Quick trade them while they still have CURRENCY".....People on here want to trade one of the best full back in the AFL because he has CURRENCY??...and are scared that he MIGHT leave after next year....FMD...

They want to trade our leading goal kicker because he now has CURRENCY.....Last year two of our best forwards missed half the year through injury but now Howe is surplus?????

Gezzz....This trade week(s) is just so over rated it's not funny and so is the draft....

when did people fall out of love with Jeremy Howe?

He was our bloody leading goal kicker this season in an area that the ball rarely came down into and when it did it was kicked atrociously?!

Will be much better with some key forwards on the park to take much of the focus off of him.

Get a clue people.

No ones fallen out of love, but at that stage nothing was taking place.

today things are moving, & our in comings are reshaping our midfield look.

Howe needs a swift kick up to get him into a fresh perspective.

Agree

I support the club not the player - don't get me wrong love Frawley and he's a gun.

THis club will remain a [censored] kicker until it gets ruthless in all aspects of it's operations

absolutely, there has been a culture at Melbournefc for IMO about 15+ years, where the tail has been swinging the dog about. this has to stop. players will learn.

despite Roos arrival and our trading so far there's a fair chance we'll have pick 2 again.

I was talking about Howe, I wouldn't trade Frawley unless he said he was out the door and even then I'd do my utmost to keep him.

Yeah Howe may have been our leading goal kicker but our team was [censored] and we have Clark, Hogan, Dawes and Watts to play there. Howe is one dimensional, can't do much through the middle and is an average set shot. I don't want to throw him away for nothing but I wouldn't lose sleep if we gained something decent for him.

It's pretty funny, I got the same response two years ago when I said we should trade out Jamar while other teams would still be willing to give us something good for him, now we try to give him away and no one will take his contract off our hands. People weren't happy when we traded Johnstone or when McLean wanted out either (before he decided to go I thought we could only have 2 of McLean, Moloney & Jones on our list and thought he was the weakest of the 3 anyway.) it's called good list management and knowing what you have, what you need and how long your assets have before they start to depreciate away.

Agree, Doc. Naturally, I'm more than happy to trust Roos and his team. If they think Howe is too good to give up, then so be it. But they'd be stupid not to look at a deal like Howe for Shiel. It won't happen, but we have to be ruthless and open to these types of trades.

It wouldn't be a straight swap, if we were to involve Howe in any deals regarding Shiel, it would be Howe and pick 9 to GWS for Shiel.

It's a reasonable trade, not saying we should be looking to get rid of Howe, but to get a guy the quality of Shiel - we'd have to give up a player of some quality, no doubt.

I would do Blease and pick 9 in a heart beat for Shiel, would also do Howe and 9 among other deals

I wonder if it would be more like P9 & Blease,,, to GWS for Shiel & P22

or Howe & P40,,, to GWS for Shiel & P21

There's no way GWS would trade Blease for Shiel. But I could see them doing it for Howe and pick 9. Won't happen though.

Howe and Pick 9 to GWS for who? So we trade a top 10 pick and a Howe (a dead set golden goose) for some GWS punk? lol dont ya love trade period.

I'd love trade period a lot more if we did that trade. If Dylan Shiel was in this draft he'd go pick 2 if not pick 3 or 4. You'd be getting a certain 200 gamer who can burst from clearances, kick goals, pretty much do all that you'd want from a midfielder and he'd do it right now. If it took Howe to move back up those spots then that's what it would take. Howe has a great highlight reel and some pretty unique aerial talents but more games than not he doesn't contribute to winning.

A lot of crazy trades get put up in trade week. But trading pick 9 and a guy in Howe who hasn't cemented himself as an AFL player for a guy who could be described as the best young midfielder GWS have (considering they've had the top 3 and more picks in the last 2 drafts and preselection) is not crazy. Shiel is no punk.

Yeah, it would be a massive win for us.

It's a hypothetical of course, but it would be a dream to land Shiel, no doubt.

GWS seemed reluctant to give up Tyson last year and Shiel this year, for good reason.

I think if we could use pick 9 to get Shiel this year, we should try and do that, but it appears unlikely GWS will let him go.

Purely from a marketing perspective, I'm sure Demetriou would love Howe in GWS colours taking mark of the year. Offering Howe plus pick 9 for Shiel would be an option they would look at plus they have surplus midfielders on their list.....wishful thinking I know but the Dees are on a roll at the moment!

I dont think Blease has much currency and Shiel is worth more than pick 9 imo

I'd rate Shiel around P5ish I would have thought. not up there with the Jeager O'meara's or Jack Martins.

I think Howe on footy ability + his drawcard ability in a new frontier, would clamber up to Shiels value.

Win-win then, isn't it Yeata? ;)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
