Didn't the Ox call it last year that Cloke would stay at Collingwood?

Or did he get it wrong?

Can't remember, but I remember him going early and hard.

Posted

Anyone listen to SEN? The Ox confident we will get Shiel

What did he say? I am pretty happy to hear that, Ox might not be the smartest bloke but he loves the club and his sources are usually pretty spot on...

Absolutely. Sweeteners Dawes and Barry.

Agree are great sweetners with Hogan for the loss of Scully. Some irony that we didn't really pick up mids with the loss of $cully

Posted

It is gospel.

He is not interested in being traded to Melbourne.

I don't want you to give any information you're not comfortable sharing Sleeve

but your contact at ESP are they Sheil's manager? Are you certian Sheil won't be convinced to move? Or are GWS playing hardball??

I reckon (just a hunch) if GWS are going to make a play for a senior player they may go after pick 2 and sacrifice a talent to do it

My source isn't his manager.

Shiel knocked it on the head when it was broached. He had no interest in a move

to the a Demons. No formal offer was made.

I can't sit back with certainty and say weight of dollars won't make him rethink but

he's apparently a very strong minded lad and isn't motivated by money but moreover

about being the best footballer he can be.

Apparently an absolutely ripping kid , I'd love him but I doubt it'll happen

agree ... we are on the nose for such kids. They are smart. It's the Cats, Pies, Hawks etc. for Caddy, Adams, Longer as they come home.

I tend to disagree. They are short-sighted and motivated by short-term goals. They all want to play in next year's GF. They aren't thinking about the full term of their career. They aren't thinking about being the highest paid player at a weaker club vs a young fringe player at a contender. They aren't thinking about the potential rewards if they do make a move to Melbourne and are part of the resurgence of the side and possibly the first flag in 50+ years. They certainly aren't thinking about what it will bring them post-football.

And if that is their mindset, then we don't want them anyway.

We want players who want to play for the MFC and [censored] the rest.

It's line-ball. On the one hand there is the clear motivation to win a flag. Melbourne (and St Kilda, and GWS, and arguably the Dogs) simply cannot offer that, even in the long term - the vision isn't there yet (maybe in 12 months that will be different).

On the other hand, look at Caddy - struggled to get into Geelong's side, is arguably still not best 22, and didn't get a great deal of game time, for a longer period of time, without the risk of being squeezed out in the future.

Thanks mate

I wonder if an official offer has been made now and GWS and the Dees are getting Sheil to seriously think about it??

I take what you say on board though I reckon it's still a long shot that we'll get him, but it gives me some hope with the Media and Ox are saying we are a chance

I realise this statement is not gospel but I am not surprised

We need to send Roosy and Pia Miller up to Sydney to convince Sheils to come to the MFC :) if not I reckon we are going to the draft with pick 2.......... Which isn't all bad but it's going to be another long year

& IF we go to the draft we need to target a Shiel 'type'. no more mortons types, bennell types, we want boys about to be MEN. no more "Peter Pans".

It's a pretty well founded assessment considering we've only played in 2 GF's in 50 years and been demolished in both.

Just having a look at the GWS list...

They are so stocked for mids it's not funny.

It's an embarrassment of riches, especially compared to us.

Look at this:

Jonathan O'Rourke

Lachie Whitfield

Liam Sumner

Dom Tyson

Toby Greene

Stephen Coniglio

Tom Scully

Callan Ward

Taylor Adams

Rhys Palmer

Anthony Miles

Devon Smith (fwd)

Jacob Townsend

Tom Bugg (def)

Nick Haynes (fwd)

Adam Kennedy (def)

Will Hoskin-Elliot

Curtly Hampton (fwd)

Adam Treloar

Lachie Plowman (def)

Now fair play, quite a few of those will play as fwds or defenders, both in a pocket and on a flank.

And take Taylor Adams out of that equation. So maybe halve that list.

Honestly, there is still a hell of a lot of young (unproven) talent there and not enough midfield spots.

Now - try to squeeze Dylan Shiel onto that list (as I've omitted his name).

For GWS, their priority now is getting either mature talent to lead (which they are struggling to do) or get early picks to spread the ages of their talent on the list.

Hence the desire for pick 2.

I think GWS will want to do a trade with us for pick 2, but are just trying to release lesser players than what we are after.

At the end of the day, we should be able to get a quality mid or 2 off GWS at some stage, even if we don't use pick 2.

Greg Denham on SEN this morning restated that Shiel asked to be traded to Victoria, but GWS were firm about keeping him.

Its nothing new, but it still gives me a glimmer of hope.

Callan Ward

Adam Treloar

Leaving: Taylor Adams

Outside mids: Hoskin-Elliot, O'Rourke, Scully

Possibly no good: Townsend, Miles, Palmer

Defenders: Plowman, Hampton, Kennedy, Bugg, Haynes

Forwards: Smith, Sumner

They've got some really good mids to use out of their backline and forward. But also some guys who I think will take a long time to develop inside game as mentioned. And Whitfield is another that will probably take time to really start winning the ball inside as well as using it beautifully on the outside. Some of their more highly rated guys - Dom Tyson, Coniglio and Greene really struggled last year. Greene is one that needs to get his head right and improve his kicking otherwise he'll be on that scrap heap next to Rhys Palmer.

My point is despite the impressive numbers depth will only get you so far. And Shiel has been their clear second best midfielder behind Callan Ward since they started. With his second half of 2013 Taylor Adams maybe started to pull ahead of Treloar and Greene for 3rd best and he's going.

They'll get improvement across the park when more guys can run out games and but they really need to keep the guys they already have going well. Gold Coast really improved this year on the back of consistent performance from Prestia and O'Meara to complement GAJ. And the occasional cameo from Bennell usually against Melbourne.

I certainly think they'd entertain Tyson, Coniglio or Greene for pick 2 although the preference would be to keep them as they have a mid first round pick and will get either a pick or player for Adams already. Don't think we are any chance at Shiel unless he throws an almighty fit about getting back to Victoria. Hate to say this but it would help if he had a reason to come home ie. family tragedy or needs to be with his baby mumma like Dyl Roberton.

Agreed, I won't be super disappointed if we go to the draft with 2 but I'll leave it up to the people in the know to decide who to draft as I have NFI

If he wants to break a contract so badly GWS will tell him he can only go to the club with the best offer. Pick 2 will probably be the best offer, they can then work out how to on trade the damn thing for some mature players.

I actually really want to trade pick 2 for Shiel. Not only is he powerfully built for contested ball winning capabilities, but can also win the ball and be damaging on the outside, explosive runner and can take the game on whilst kicking goals. Having to pick up one of Aish or Kelly will be another young player that will take a while to develop, where as Shiel I believe even though he is still young will have an immediate impact within our midfield.

Just offer him a load of cash and obviously a guaranteed spot in the team (we need to find a way to pay 95% of cap anyway after losing Sylvia and Davey plus Gws can't really offer him those 2 things anyway).

We need to convince him first in order to get GWS to play ball.

We need to convince him so much that he is willing to tell GWS if they don't trade him he will walk next year and they will get nothing.

WTF has he got against coming to the Demon's anyway?

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
