[Hypothetical] MFC Board moves to extend Mark Neeld's contract till 2015

I would have thought there could potentially be some logic behind such a move, on the premise that the new contract would override the existing contract and would include clear performance measures linked to clauses that would enable termination where such performance measures were not satisfactorily met, i.e. to limit the amount MFC would have to pay out if they decide to remove Neeld.

I have no idea whether such items already exist in the current agreement, but if such a renegotiation of the contract occured, it could meet both the need to instill some stability in the football department whilst retaining a degree a flexibility if things don't improve.

Publically it would appear we have backed the coach but behind closed doors we have set clear expectations. In reality though, you couldn't see Neeld or his agent agreeing to such terms, or not happily thats for sure.

Installing a culture and being able to coach is not mutually exclusive, to the contrary you can't install the culture of a profession football team if your on field performances are so far under an exceptable AFL standard that in nothing short of embarrassing. This will only build a culture of losing, a 2nd division culture where all you want as a player is put yourself in a position to be recruited by another club. This is what is the real danger. There will be no meaningful culture change while we are so pathetic on field. The players are divided and this is the coaches responsibility.

I feel sorry for Neeld as he was given a job in a broken club that he was simply not qualified for. The task is well beyond him.

Neeld is a big part of the problem, and is not the solution. He should fall on his sword or be promptly dismissed.

The win loss ratio is frustrating, but Neeld has not had his best 22 on the park together at all, let alone for a few rounds, so we have no idea what our best is like.

So for me at this point, we couldn't resign him, but sacking him would also be harsh, he is contracted for a good part of two more years, we may as well give him more time and hopefully we will get to see exactly where we are at later in the year.

Awesome idea.

Clearly I'm just a knuckle dragging reactionary but are any Neeld backers having some doubts with the collosal porking that we're getting by an expansion side on our own dungheap? Presumably this is all part of a bigger picture? Was I expecting too much in thinking the team would turn up, ready to play and not be held goalless again in Q1?

Enlighten me as to why Neeld deserves his position until next year let alone the end of this year.

Would you still do that after today? Really? Do you see any light at the end of the tunnel at all with this set up (coach / admin / players etc)?

I have been accused of using a bunch of Metaphors in my OP although I think the author of that particular post does not really understand what a metaphor actually is (or I am mistaken by what he/she constitutes as a bunch) My OP was rhetorical and by that I mean it was designed to make a point.

Like some others you may have missed my point, I am not saying I would extend his contract because he is doing so well, but, I would as a club act in a way that showed some guts and not be lead around by the Media and nay sayers and take a knee jerk reaction in the middle of a season. The second point I wanted to make is that we have (now) a 113 + pages of negativity about MN and occasionally I like a little balance. The third point was not really a point but just thought it would be a laugh to pull the old Free Sex gag on a few posters get them reading a different post.

Now to answer your question after Gold Coast I was definitely finding it hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. It was a sad indictment and almost expected the obligatory Press conference with MN being shown the door. But hey guess what the club is still sticking by its decision.

After Richmond felt we were back on track. I reckon the players got a little self belief worked hard and were let down by skill errors which challenged their mental toughness. They stuck at their task and fought out the game. When I watch the players I like to see how they react when they are challenged or make mistakes, if they shrug it off and continue to work even harder then that's what I like to see.

I reckon our fitness has improved since last year, our skills are letting us down at crucial moments in games which can hurt us and switch any momentum we have gained against us. The players skills will improve with games and (that horrible word) time.

If we maintain the work ethic and our skills improve each week who knows may be MN may make it to the end of his contract. lol.

I don't want to be a club that has a revolving door of coaches.

I'd like Neeld to be afforded a similar degree of latitude as Bailey

I believe unless there are disaster performances continued throughout the year he should finish the year at least

I hope the football department is being reviewed as I think Jackson has stated would be done

Neeld is not alone there's a senior coach with pedigree right next to him most of the time.

Next 3 games will tell us if they can get a side to consistently compete.

Then the two after the bye with hopefully Clark and grimes back could be up for grabs.

Im happy to keep Neeld.... I won't miss him if he's sacked..... I just don't see the point if its like for like..... Unless someone like Paul roos or bomber Thompson or john worsfold is his replacement, than theres no point.... We could be in a coach sacking loop like this for years.....

These next few weeks may well make or break him. If the players show spirit and fight against sides like Freo (in Perth), Hawthorn, and the Pies then he will see out the year and if we go on from there he's got my vote to have his full term. But if we get blown off the park like we did in the first 3 rounds then the wolves will circle.

I really hope we've turned a corner for his sake, but I won't get my hopes up.

I've made my views on Neeld clear.

I agree that any decision should be made based on what is best for the club, not external pressure. But that cuts both ways, in that we really shouldn't extend Neeld's contract on the basis of standing firm in the face of media criticism.

If he is to retain his position/get an extension it should be because he is meeting/exceeding KPI's put in place by his employers. At a guess I'd guess that his performance isn't meeting them at this stage.

Obviously a Roos type would be the preferred candidate, unless the situation shows no improvement whatsoever or (heaven forbid) gets worse I wouldn't be jumping at the opportunity to replace MN with an inexperienced coach.
