Can't get a game at North Ballarat

I think we are now past that type of recruitment crap now. If only we had had Neeld and Viney heading our recruitment at the start of our rebuild in 08 I'd imagine we would have a very different squad at the moment. You can just see by the players he has brought in Hogan, Viney, Kent, Toumpas, they are all ultra competitive and want to be the best they can be.

And we wonder why our club's stuffed.

A decade of squandering first round draft picks. That's why.

You're onto something there.

First thing I'd do is sack whoever recruited this Cook bloke with pick #12.

Next thing is I'd sack the board that appointed the recruiting bloke.

Anyone know their names?

Our KPF recruits from 2001 to 2011:

Luke Molan - Pick 9

Aaron Rogers - Pick 26

Brad Miller - Pick 55

Nick Smith - Pick 15

Matthew Bate - Pick 14

Lynden Dunn - Pick 16

Michael Newton - Pick 43

*Ben Holland - Pick 21

Colin Garland - Pick 46

*Paul Johnson - Pick 29

Jack Watts - Pick 1

Lucas Cook - Pick 12

It seems they either became defenders or got delisted... Let's hope young Hogan can buck the trend!

Clearly, other issues play a part. There's a certain concensus about most of these picks. It's a pretty easy game picking holes in the recruiting of a team when they aren't going well. I believe that, if another club had made the selections that MFC have made over the past decade, they'd be in a very different place.

In the case of Cook I doubt it, he just didn't have a competitive bone in his body. Nice skills, good decision making when he had the ball but the mental toughness wasn't there.

BP did such a job didn't he.l...He is one man i would love to eyeball...Just sit in the waiting room...there is a queue of you all.

Not letting Cook or Barry Prendergast off the hook, but we develop our players poorly. We're the worst in the League at it 'Wyl' and I'm talking about the fundamentals of the game and other vital areas of a young players development.

In previous years, it didn't look like a lot of our players had set foot in the gym. And our fitness levels have been appalling. All this coupled with the fundamentals of the sport being neglected, contributes to ruining a young blokes career (and I'm not specifically referring to Cook)

You are wasting your time with that post, has too much logic, WYL would have nothing to say if we adopted that concept, and anyway give it a couple more posts and it will be Cam Schwab's fault, thought the Club had delisted Cook so shouldn't be any interest in what he is doing now it's history ,just another topic for Rangey to keep repeating his mantra for the odd 13 pages

I specifically said in the opening sentence that I'm not letting Cook or Prendergast off the hook. Refer to post #12.

I'm not letting the club off the hook in any way. I pointed out that there were more mistakes and obvious errors made than just the pick in the draft. Bigger picture stuff - and Bailey and now Neeld are all part of it.

Here's a list of the basic fundamentals not being adhered to. It's up to a coach to instil them. What chance does an 18 year old have at our club?

Our current crop of players can't think for themselves.

The team has no confidence.

Has no dash and daring.

Has very little teamwork.

We don't run to position.

We don't kick to position

We don't shepherd.

We don't back each other up.

We play from behind.

We're constantly 2nd to the ball.

Gut running isn't part of our game plan.

Our disposal skills are woeful.

We hang our heads too much.

We don't use the corridor anywhere near enough.

Our 2nd and 3rd efforts are generally poor

We play an outdated game style.

We don't talk out on the ground.

Give and go handballing - rarely see it.

The players don't care enough when we lose.

Our players are lazy.

We don't man up.

We give up too easily.

We don't chase or tackle with any intent.

Our forwards get caught from behind too much.

Our clearance work and system out of the middle is virtually non existent.

We don't know how to win.

We're generally soft and have been since the start of the 2008 season.

Superb isn't it....and some people on here are telling ME i am a fool and there is nothing wrong.

Sadly many supporters on here are now just in survival mode....winning is not considered.

That just about covers it 'Macca'.

My niece's boyfriend played for north ballarat rebels at u/18 level with both Lucas cook and Tom McDonald. He tells me that Lucas was the best player he had seen at that level, and was astounded when tommy Mac was drafted. Funny how it turned out. Well not really.

Apparently Lucas is playing part time at hopetoun this year, so my niece's boyfriend is playing with him again. Interesting to hear how he goes.

Isn't it just ridiculous. Just about everyone on this site would know what the basic fundamentals of the game are so it's hardly 'ground breaking' stuff that I've mentioned.

It all starts out of the middle. Our centre clearance onballers often get caught from behind (Sylvia was a major culprit last weekend) Jamar's taps go nowhere so that bit has to be addressed.

Jones is our only onballer who reads the play well, plays in front of his man, gets the ball and then tries to do something with it. Viney should develop into a similar player but the rest of them have no idea.

More should be expected and demanded from our players (especially our midfielders) It's not enough to merely say "They're all crap". They'll all got ability (you don't get onto an AFL list without a certain amount of ability) The club has a history of not developing our players well and the players themselves are not self motivated enough to improve (aside from Jones, Clark and probably Viney)

3 blokes - that's all I can find.

I agree, the club doesn't talk about winning. If they're not talking about it then they're not thinking about it.

They talk about 'bi-products', structures, processes, systems etc etc. It's all bs, rhetoric and it's all said to 'deflect'. And a fair percentage of supporters lap it up.

You were right Wyl, we needed a clean out after '186'.

We could somehow win tonight, but the club isn't getting any real praise from me until we put in a sustained effort for a number of games. It's all about winning. Those who believe otherwise are making excuses in advance. The real world punishes losers and always will.

Same here Macca. We could win tonight but I'm not coming around until I see consistent effort. And that doesn't mean wins per se. On my end, I just want to see the boys have a dip every game. While I just want to see consistent effort, the club needs to view every game as a potential win. As you said, and I have said elsewhere, the club needs to be about winning games of football rather than BS gimmicks and rhetoric. Edited by Guest

Cook was a disaster but he was no orphan we have had plenty, I remember getting howled down when I suggested that he wouldn't make it half way through his first season.

Our recruiting sucks and it seems as if we haven't learnt a thing by recruiting has-beens from other clubs and expecting them to all of a sudden come good.

Mitch Clark and Jack Viney would have been complimented by Olie Wines and Jack Darling.

And yet David King keeps bringing up his name when talking about our mature recruiting instead of playing him.....

We done the right thing getting rid of Gysberts, Morton, Jurrah, Cook.

They are too slight on.

And judging by Neeld getting rid of those types, I am gobsmacked we didn't take Wines.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
