Jack Trengove in 2013

It will be interesting to see if he has one ( another gear that is ).

I actually think that with more experienced players in the team in 2013 and less injuries he may not be a fixture in the side.

Hopefully he will improve because IMO he did not deserve a lot of the games he got in 2012

Huge confidence that jacky trengove will one day be a gun, don't think he will reach his peak next year but I reckon he will show why he was selected as the youngest captain ever with a few standout games/quarters.

Chances are you and the FD are right FG

From my spot in the outer I thought he was not much better than average in 2012 but then he had a large number of mates.

I guess it pays to remember he is just 21,

Seems to be running better at training and has lost some weight, just needs a few extra yards of pace...skill and courage are there in spades.

He was probably regarded as ineffectual in an offensive sense by outsiders last year & some supporters. It was mentioned a couple of times during the 2012 season by Neeld that Trengove was leading the club in many performance indicators inside the FD. I'm not sure why he wasn't moving as well last year but I would have thought it was OP or some sort of injury that he played through. I'm still hoping to see big things from Trengove. In the coming years if he stays injury free he could consistently average above 20 disposals a game. I'm basing that judgement off his early form at the club where he did have quite a few high disposal games for an 18-19 year old.

There are a lot of highly rated 21yo's (and under) well ahead of him OldDee. Gaff, Swallow, Martin, Redden,Sidebottom, Fyfe, Greene, Atley, Hannebery, plus a few others ... are all players well ahead of Trengove in terms of their output and development so far.

It's a concern. We should be seeing a player comfortably sitting among that group.

Regarding his early high disposal games, I'd more put that down to the opposition paying scant attention to a first year player. Two years on, why have his numbers dropped?

There is no evidence the player had or has OP.

I think we have to cut him a little slack

Just about all the players you mention play in reasonable or good teams where they do not have to win games off there own boot.

I suspect in a average to Good side he would be doing a lot better.

yeah i dont think thats right at all. His KPI's suggest that he got bettar as the year went on and did everything the club asked him to do. He will be a permanent part of our side for a long time.

That could mean one of two things

- He will improve as the Dees rise

-or he will remain the best of a bad lot.

Hope it is the first

ol Jackie boy was forced into a sort of containment role in 12 and performed quite well i thought in a non glamorous way.

Given a much greater degree of support i wouldnt be surprised to see him come out and play with more flair and aplomb. He's a good thinker and reader of play.

Should be a much better season for Trenners in 13.

and...he's got class and style to his game :)

When fit, he is one of the first names on the team sheet. He is a fixture in the side and will be for quite some time.

He might not have been the attacking weapon in 2012 that some wanted but I was happy with his performance and I am confident that he will continue to grow and develop.

When you compare him to the other players on our list in the same age bracket, he is easily at the front of the pack.

From memory of your most recent incarnation you ask questions, but never acknowledge any of the answers, so I'm not sure why you enquire in the first place.

Trengove's role changed last year as he was taught a far more defensive game and definitely lost some speed. He stopped hunting the ball as much while he was defending an opponent, but he's had a year to understand his game better, he'll benefit from being part of a fitter and stronger group, he's trimmed down in my eyes and is definitely running better. He'll also benefit from Viney, Toumpas and Rodan.

The following is his bio by Matt Burgan pre-draft 2009:

2 - MELBOURNE - Jack Trengove

DOB: 02/09/91, Height: 185cm, Weight: 82kg

Recruited from: Kybybolite/Sturt (SA)

Draft range: 1-2

Meet Jack Trengove

Although he will be taken at two, Trengove's exceptional performances in the SANFL senior finals showed he is equally deserving of the No.1 tag. In the preliminary final against Glenelg, he was best on ground with 29 disposals. Finals prevented Trengove from attending the NAB AFL Draft Camp, but he followed up at the South Australian state screening with an outstanding beep test: level 15.3. Likened to Collingwood great Nathan Buckley, Trengove has excellent speed, endurance and leadership. He can also play midfield, forward or back.

You'll note that speed wasn't an issue when he was a junior.

I agree that he's super important and needs to become A grade. He needs to become our Trent Cotchin. That's why he was drafted. Interestingly, after his third year Cotchin averaged 18 disposals and after his third year Trengove has averaged 19.

This is a big year for Trengove and I think he'll take a giant stride.

That's why when I wrote the post I said I was not sure, it is merely a speculative comment. I would assume the way he was running & also kicking last year there was some sort of injury.

I wouldn't have thought so, lets judge it at the end of his career. Stalled a bit last season but fair chance he was carrying injury. By the way Trengove sits comfortably with the names you mention if you compare first seasons and which one of those guys is captain of their club?

He was down last year but who does OD think was playing at Casey?

Gifted games my arse.

He fought hard and competed and when he gets his spread back and a little pace you watch him become Lenny Hayes-like.

Prefer not to think about your arse rpfc.

Seriously that is your opinion I have a different view.

I thought he had a number of ordinary games in 2012.

The fact there was no one at Casey to replace him supports my view.

I hope your right, we will see in the year ahead

How someone can be given games gifted to them without a suitable replacement baffles me...

Unless you think we should run out there with the 10 in form (if that) blokes we do have?

While Trengove didn't have a great year can I point out a few stats.

199 kicks (6th at Melbourne)

190 handballs (2nd at Melbourne)

88 marks (7th at Melbourne)

99 tackles (2nd at Melbourne)

8 goals (12th at Melbourne)

To me these stats suggest they worked on his inside game and his pace wasn't an area of focus. (2nd handballs, 2nd tackles)

Remember he is a 3rd year player in one of the worst clubs in the league. With better players around him his stats would improve and there's nothing to suggest his natural progression won't continue. As Melbourne improve so will Jack

Lets compare his stats to Dustin Martin, the very next pick in the draft. Keep in mind he is rated highly and currently plays in a more successful side

257 kicks (6th at Richmond - 58 more than JT)

190 handballs (6th at Richmond - 9 less than JT)

63 marks (16th at Richmond - 25 less than JT)

60 tackles (7th at Richmond - 39 less than JT)

23 goals (4th at Richmond - 15 more than JT)

JT's stats are comparable with arguable the highest rated player from this draft. While he may have 'looked slow' at times during 2012, he was by no stretch being left behind by his teammates.

Comments above that Trengove is likely to be on the outer in years to come are laughable. He will continue to be one of the first picked for the next 10 years

Let your anger subside a little rpfc

I agree with you there was no one to replace him that is my point.

If he displayed the same form at Hawthorn would he have played all the games he did?

A oft overlooked factor when assessing a young mid is who are the other/better midfielders around him?

Many in the list you gave of 21 yr olds that JT should be besting serve in midfields where they are playing as the 4th best midfielder or further out in the pecking order. The higher you play in the pecking order the more attention you recieve from oppositions. For example Sidebottom would have Swan, Pendles, Ball, etcc in front of him. Sidebottom is probably 5th or 6th in the pecking order, and it's easier to perform better with less opposition pressure...

Jack regularly played as our 3rd best mid (after Jones and Grimes) and performed well.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
