what could have been......

I don't buy into this - players we move on - for every Martin, Petterd and Rivers there is a Cheney, Moloney, Sylvia, Gysberts and Bruce.

Roos will clear out what we consider flotsam and jetsam end of year and one or two will make a go of it at another club - so be it.

GWS would be moaning about Tyson, Adelaide about Vince and the Bullies less than happy about Cross. Happens to all clubs.

Watched the replay of the Brisbane Collingwood game. Martin was running everywhere. Getting

into space back and forward and a constant presence around the action. No opponent could keep up with him. If his teamates looked for him more he may have ended up with well over 40 possessions aside from the numerous hit outs and spoils. Looked like superman.

Steph always suffered from getting injured at the wrong time. When Nic Nat was first compiling his highlights reel with some unbelievable cameos in 2011 was it? Anyway I can remember saying Steph to some friends could match him in height, agility and ability given a chance. That was when He strung together six or so great games while Jamar was injured. Played well but Jamar came back and then he got injured. He is a number one ruck and that is all, like Jimmy was and that reflects their early history, that is didnt play early.

Martin always looked much better when he was number one ruck, because he struggled to get involved in the game when he played second fiddle. I'll be interested to see how Brisbane juggle him and Big L.

Steph another lazy 31 possessions and a goal on the weekend playing a ruck rover role!! That hurts. Smart move by Leper because this allows him exploit his strengths, he is big and he is quick and he is agile. No wonder he had to go!

he sucked a55 at the MFC and nobody gave a rats when he was moved on

something tells me if he was still with us he would still be rubbish

if you want to moan about list mgmt why don't you look at Vince for Sylvia

oh no we can't look levelheadedly at the issue can we

Yep, I'm so glad we hung on to Jamar with his big fat salary and his big lazy arse, instead of keeping Martin and his ability to win truckloads of possession and play any position on the ground for a fraction of the cost. Another tick for the master list managers.

I don't think it was necessarily the wrong thing to do when we moved him on but my sentiment was that we should keep him.

He may not have survived the Neeld years anyway, however I think if he was still with us, he'd be a handy player. If Leppitsch can get this out of him, there's no reason Roos (one of the best coaches of the modern era) wouldn't be.

Sorry I don't see the link between Sylvia walking out last year and us off loading Martin for pick 53 which we used for Matt Jones in 2012 And I didn't like the decision at the time as everytime he got fit and had a crack as the No 1 ruck he played well.

I do not know the inside detail of Martin's trade, but the decision to rid us of his services yet keep Jamar (when he still had some trade value) seems truly unforgivable.

Really? I was thoroughly peed off at the time and, looking back through this thread, there were plenty of others who weren't happy either.

Now some are calling him the best ruckman in the league (albeit his teammate). Good one Dees.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-09-01/leuenbergers-praise-for-martin

And yet Jamar is a "vastly superior ruckman" according to those who amazingly still choose to defend us letting him go.

Sometimes I think the pain of yet another horrible decision is too much to bear so they choose to continue defending it. It's either that or stubbornness because this was, quite clearly, a mistake.

But good luck to him all the same.

Not sure how Brisbane are going to work their line up next year, when Lewy is fit does he come back in as number 1 ruck? if the rumours about Paddy Ryder are true they might find themselves with the great issue of too many quality ruckman

The link is that the Sylvia trade was a win, and nobody mentions it in favour of being negative and critical of the club

I liked Martin when with us,played some great footy in patches, but he wasnt getting the opportunity in our ruck setup so he left, whether by choice or not who knows? He had the same purple patch with us after Jamar got injured, then the next year vanished and was traded a year later. But the interesting this is what will happen once the preferred talls return as what happened with us?

I remember him literally jumping on Kosi's head in centre ball ups when Jamar was out. At the time I put it down to Kosi being brain damaged from Gia's hit way back when, but I guess not.

I still don't understand why we gave him up, but *sigh* it is what it is, and he's probably the only ex Demon from the dark years that is earning his pay at his new club.

Petterd and Bennell are earning their pay. Both are currently best 22 at their respective clubs.

But this is the only one that stings a bit.

If Martin plays a full season of this calibre he will make All Australian, no question.

I doubt it. He's not at the same level as Ablett, Pendlebury, Selwood and the like.

In all seriousness though, it's going to be really interesting to see how he goes in 2015. Will he keep his form? Will he even keep his spot?

I don't rate Bennell. Never did. But I can't say I've watched any WCE games this year (I was working during both out encounters) so take that for what it's worth.

But, yeah, Petterd. I think I repressed the memory of him going. That was another WTF moment. He should never have been delisted.

He'll definitely keep his spot. Whether he keeps his form remains to be seen, but my tip would be yes,

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
