Very sad news.

Best wishes go out to all who knew him, especially close friends and family. Terrible.

Unbelievable. RIP.

There aren't any balconies in the photos I looked at online and a mate reckons there aren't any at the Flamingo.

There aren't.

Was just reported on 10 news that there are no balconies in the area. Roof or window.

I don't suppose it really matters, it's tragic whatever happened.

The Melbourne Football Club has issued this statement via Twitter:

All at MFC send their sincere condolences to the family and friends of John McCarthy and the Port Adelaide Football Club.

We at Demonland are also deeply moved by this shock news and send out condolences to John's family and friends.

RIP

Not sure why my original post was deleted re. questioning where the balconies are at the Flamingo.

This is obviously a very tragic event, and I pass my best wishes on to his family and the Club.

I think it's important that the series of events is made public in due course. While it may seem I'm speculating (let's face it, 5am in Vegas, I doubt he would've been going for a morning jog), it's important for our players to realsie that, while they have every right to let their hair down at seasons end, that they are still human and sh!t happens, even to them.

Nb. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. I'm trying to get a point across in the most sensitive way in a crap situation. If it causes angst among posters, I'm happy for mods to delete it. Cheers.

Maybe it's more appropriate to pass on condolences at this point in time and not to speculate about what may or may not have been the cause of John's untimely passing.

Can't those sort of discussions at least wait until later?

Shocking day for his family, friends, club, fans and the whole industry.

Another reminder that life is too short.

Sad news, just terribly sad.

Was a death in the NFL about a month ago and I thought wow the AFL have been lucky with nothing bad happening for ages. Spoke to soon.

John was a great outside player and someone I hoped Melbourne would get last off-season.

Irrespective of the events of the night, the one thing that remains is the footy world mourns one of its own. RIP John.

Really terrible. Breaks me when I hear of any young person who dies suddenly, regardless of who they are or what the circumstances are. Nobody gets to say goodbye and so much life is wasted. Really feel for his family.

Poor Kid-Words will mean nothing to his Mum and Dad right now.

We all rant and rave about people on here, the value of players and the strength of one's character based on what team they play for/support. Tonight, that, and a lot of the other brouhaha that goes with AFL footy, means nothing to the friends and family of John McCarthy. Words on a message board would be little salve for the pain they are no doubt feeling.... The pain will go away but there is no point in thinking that it is not numbing now for them. God bless John's soul and may his family and friends come through this painful time as strongly as they possibly can.

RIP John Mccarthy. Tragedy is an often misused word, but this is a tragedy, a life cut way too short. A very talented, dedicated and well liked footballer. Will be sadly missed by everyone. Condolences to family, friends and teammates.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
