Brian Royal has copped a fair amount of stick over the course of the season and the general consensus seems to be that he's unwanted.

Some have gone as far to say that Choco is the crux of the midfield problem and has basically poisoned every line he's worked with.

Personally, I'm of the belief that we just don't have the cattle. Coupled with all of the off-field issues this year and a whole new regime (except individual in question) it was always going to be a challenging year for anyone tasked with making sense from the senseless at the MFC.

Regardless, let's see how Choco fares in this poll.

His contract is up...he's goorrnn.

The real question should be whether other assistants will walk of their own volition

All the talk of getting chapman for his culture building abilities gets me thinking we should go hard for Cameron Ling as a Midfield coach. This bloke knows what it's like to be in a crap team and then turn it around into a monster of a team. Many say he is interested in coaching so I say get him.

He's got some real appeal, Lingy. I'd bet he's on the radar of many clubs although he does seem quite at home with the media.

Would definitley have a better vocabulary than Royal too.

Brian royal has a record of ruining any line he has coached. Unfortunately he has had a go at most lines and therefore has stunted the growth of the majority of our team. It's not personal the facts stand for themselves, the back line was stunted last year the midfield this year.

You'd imagine if he did want to coach Melbourne may suit him as we are starting from scratch and whoever does turn this midfield around will look like a dead set legend in the coaching fraternity.

I ve often wondered whetherh it was purely coincidental or actually circumstantial. He does seem to be there currently simply becuase he is contracted. I suppose we'll knwo soon enough once the circus hits town.

No better place than on a forum.

I want him moved on and replaced with someone recently out of the game. I think midfield set ups and structures have moved on a lot since Royal was playing. Sometimes our lack of accountability and apparent poor set up beggars belief. None more than the first game of the season where Brisbane must have handballed out the back of the stoppages to one or sometimes 2 free players and set up attacks so often it was enough to make you vomit. The Richmond game a couple of weeks later was no better.

I know we don't have the cattle either but the set up just looks pedestrian and very easily countered or exploited by the opposition.

Wasn't liked at Richmond....OUSTED!

Just explaining who I would want to replace Brian Royal as our midfield coach as Royal is the subject of the thread so I think it's relevant. Have you given everyone who has started a thousand Mark Neeld threads a reminder there is already an original thread?

No, I think you are on the money with Ling. He would be great but on the Ling thread a few others said that his business commitments may be a problem and that is the reason he is doing special comments this year and nothing more. Ling has the inside knowledge of all the mids of the last decade because he has had to stop them, he would bring enormous knowledge of how they go about the craft. Not to mention how respected his is in the football world.

If he is a no go then maybe a Simon Black or Lenny Hayes who are both approaching retirement would be good options.

Agree we need a fresh face who is just out of the game. There is no point teaching an old coach new tactics when a young coach already knows them.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
