As i said i think its a free agency thing, but clubs can match the wages offered to some players, maybe the top 25% on their list, if they dont match the wages the player can leave. This may only be for restricted free agents or i am confused?

The way I understand it is there are 2 types of free agents:

Unrestricted Free Agents - those who are out of contract and have been at the club for either 10+ years, or they have been at the club 8-10 years and are not in the top 25% of earners at the club. These players can sign for whoever they wish, and the current club has no option to match the offer.

Restricted Free Agents - those who are out of contract and have been at the club 8-10 years and are in the top 25% of earners at the club. These players can pick any club they wish, but the current club can match the offer if they wish.

Seems like every year, Salopek is a chance to be traded...

Would love Clinton Young at the dees. Knows how to kick a footy.

Clinton Young trained at the Demons after 2005 season (u/18's) and then went to Hawks rookie list (!!!)

Can't divulge too much, but my mail tells me he's been wooed and is getting quite chuffed by the attention he's getting from a couple of clubs.

mabee this is our gws no bid ticket to j.viney pick #23

honestly right now I would prefer Blease + a draft pick over Viney if i had to choose between the 2.

Josh Drummond? Would probably be pretty popular with the guys in rehab and recovery groups but I'd rather get somebody who can get on the park more weeks than not.

Talent to burn in a body that wont let him.

Clark would hopefully be able to lure some disgruntled Lions to the Dees...

Blease is no free agent...

Agreed......... I am not 100% over the rules but Blease is not an FA

If he does not re-sign with us I beleive he will have to nominate one of the drafts and be drafted to play next year - Unless he is off to GWS as they can still sign FA's

Rivo & Moloney (probably one or two other un-contracted) can walk out to a new club if they elect....

Hope so - but, I'm nervous as my mail is quite close to the boy.

btw, PSD, how's our small forward progressing, the left footer? is he still ripping them up?

It could only be GWS or GC who would have a real chance of getting him as unless a club higher up the ladder made an offer we couldn't refuse (which is unlikely as unless a club specifically needed a small quick player who is yet to prove himself at AFL level they're not going to offer up much) then i have no doubt at all we'll play hard ball and force him to the draft (even if that means we get jack) and into the arms of GWS. Does he really want to go there?

Even if he walks he ll have to go into the national draft. Cant really see a team willing to pay a first rounder for a kid who just walked out on their old team.

Everything I hear and read says Sam is enjoying his footy, has close mates at the club and credits his coaches for his recent form. He also did an interview on 5aa radio earlier in the week saying he's enjoying being at the club and speaks about taking the club forward. Contract negotiations are taking place, I'd be very suprised if he wasn't playing for Melbourne next year.

Ha, all this Sam Blease talk put to bed on SEN going on the thread about it! THANK GOD!

As someone who has floated this - I have not heard anywhere that the AFL sanctions this type of behaviour. And as it is new to AFL (if sanctioned) it is fraught with danger.

If Essendon sign a RFA and then a club meets that contract and says 'here we will trade him to you' - I bet you the Bombers say 'nah, don't want for the price' and that club is stuck with a player they don't want and who doesn't want to be there.

Good point, neither GWS or GC would use their first round on him. Would any club? Is he worth a first round pick in this years draft? Perhaps but only just you'd have to think. This would perhaps imply that a club that is keen on him would want to trade with the dees to avoid him being forced to go into the draft.

If we refuse to trade we have the upper hand i assume. As i said i reckon nwe would play hard ball with him and if he wants out force him to go into the draft.

If Blease were in this draft I would take him with our 3rd rounder at the lowest.

That is correct...... I didn't mention it as I am hoping it will not happen!! :)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
