THE CONTRACTS THREAD [with updates]

I love Toumpas signing for an extra year. As supporters, we can't know what's going on behind the scenes at a club, but when a guy heralded as one of the best young players of his draft has seen three months of operations and is willing to commit himself, I'd say that's an excellent sign that the culture which saw Tom Scully getting out as fast as he could has been pretty severely curtailed by our new coaching and management team.

I'm a happy camper.

Don't think you can draw too much from it either way. Just remember, sure Scully ran away as fast as he could, whilst at the exact same time, Trengove signed a 3-year deal (straight away).

Spot on

Some say perhaps even faster and earlier and even assited, but who cares, he's gone and its been done to death. Seems the truth and integrity was the biggest loser with this whole episode. Sound familiar? Take Toumpas anytime and I haven't even seen him play.

Fitzpatrick is an abysmal footballer and I cannot see Neeld giving him another contract unless he has an amazing season. Sylvia may well leave this year and I am not convinced that we cannot replace him reasonably easily in the free agency period (get the feeling he wants the easy option like Rivers in order to gain a premiership). Troy Davis needs to play in order to avoid getting the chop and he must make an effort to force his way into the best 22. Joel MacDonald will leave at the end of the year and I am pretty sure that Tom Gillies will be more a serviceable player than him. Aaron Davey really needs a good season or he will retire but I think that he will continue to work at the club in an off field role. There may be a couple of other departures. For me, Tynan must play soon or he is in danger of not having his contract renewed. Michael Evans must get game time this year as he looks to be an excellent kick inside 50 and he breaks lines, although he may not receive a contract renewal if Neeld doesn't rate him (such are the quirks of Football). Max Gawn could also be at risk of being delisted if he does not get over all of these injuries. He is a good player but you cannot afford to be injured all the time in the modern game.

That is hardly a debilitating contract situation.

I agree. I'd be happy to see most of them go.

By the looks of it we will be replacing them with yet ANOTHER group of high draft picks due to ladder situation and general insipidness.

Rebuild 3.0? 4.5? 5.0? I don't even effing know anymore.

Counting and remembering our rebuilds/mini rebuilds is like trying to remember all of the digits to pie.

Rebuild no. 3.141593654...

I don't think you properly understand the purpose for which those mature players were brought to the club, nor the impact the youth strategy has had on the club in the recent past.

Btw, did you see how Matt Jones went yesterday..?

We have recruited very poorly. That is the reason Bailey failed. Where would we be if our recruits were replaced with Nic Nat, Dangerfield, Shuey, Fyfe, Reid and Jetta?

Jones looks a likely type, but striving to finish 12th with a team of mature players with limited time in the game is not the best strategy for us in the age of free agency IMO.

That's not what you said. You said:

We would have been better off drafting kids than going for mature age journeymen to try and save a failed coach.

So which is it?

Failed coach & should have gone with youth, but didn't in trying to save a failed coach?

Or list was already crap because of poor recruiting (in which case, how could the coach have succeeded?)?

Heavily revisionist about Bailey, too.

There is no inconsistency.

Our list is poor but we should have continued with a youth strategy.

Mature agers will only ever get us to mediocrity at best.

I have added Grimes to 2016 and also put a timeline in on Free Agency because people see it as many saw the Mayan Calendar. And just like the Mayan's prediction - it's a bit of a fizzer...

The only players eligible for FA in the next three years are: Sylvia, Davey (both this year), Frawley (next year), Jamar, Garland, Jones and Spencer (end of 2015).

Wont Jones be an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2015 as that will be his 10th season.

He played in our last finals win in 2006. One of the few remaining.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
