Square Peg, Round Hole - Exactly why we need Neeld!!!!

I haven't been paying to much attention to the endless comments being made by the many football "experts" out there at the moment, many of who are lining up to put the boots into the easy target. David King was the latest to have a crack, probably the biggest crack so far, suggesting the board should come out and sack Neeld now and admit they made a massive mistake. A load of misguided, uninformed tripe like a lot of the stuff being said.

One thing he did say caught my attention though. He likened Neeld to being a square peg being pushed into a round hole. He of course made out that this was the whole problem. Neeld didn't match our club in some way and therefore shouldn't be here. I actually think this is why he is at this club. We need someone like him to come in and force his way into our club, and change the shape of the hole until it is the shape it needs to be - fully professional, resilient and ready to match it with the rest of the AFL. Neeld signed up others like Misson and Craig who could help do this from a fitness and discipline area. The square peg is needed, and time needs to be given for the square peg to mould the hole into the right shape.

Good post S_T. The club wanted a shake-up and so did the fans last year.

I don't expect everyone to remember though, but it was clear the issues that were to be confronted head-on were:

Leadership over summer, Neeld warned all concerned, a clean slate to prove themselves over summer.

Give the team a game plan and implement bit by bit, layer by layer which would require everyone to buy in and comply.

Stated that things were going to get tough and made no expectations in terms of wins, that their aim was to become the hardest team to play against; that it be a work in progress and will take time. Made no apologies for changes to comply, and that some may not like it.

Aim was to really test their nerve over summer.

Made no guarantees on wins, finals etc. only person who spoke about finals was the outgoing Bailey.

We're now seeing what was spoken of, and it's testing the patience.

And the players I think are taking to it. I still think it will gain traction.

Great post !! Logical people can see the shake up of the football department was required. I just wish a few people in the media would buck the trend and remind people of the debacal the club was last year. Massive problems were so evident and drastic measures were required. That measure being an in compromising hard edged coach.

RudeBoy i'm a bit surprised by this post and not a little concerned in so far as i can't recall many posts from you where you have been negative about the club. Given your potential insights it worries me more than David Kings rantings that you reckon he's spot on about everything.

There's a truck load of evidence that a lot of the players aren't overjoyed but that's life. I have no doubt that Dean Bailey was a great friend to the players, but that's not what they needed to reach their potential. AFL is a tough environment and we can't be half arsed about it anymore. A lot of supporters of the MFC have shown a lot of love for our footy club in the last few years. It needs to pay us back.

Your comment concerns me too Rudeboy. Am I to construe that Liam is not happy at the Dees? Or perhaps that Neeld is not sensitive to the diversity of personality types, cultural differences, playing styles etc? I'm not just referring to players with indigenous backgrounds but anyone who doesn't toe the Neeld line. Please understand, I'm not sure whether Neeld is the right OR the wrong man. I'm a passionate and tragic Dee supporter and I'm desperately hoping that he is the right man. It's just that your post seems pregnant with meaning. Being a Collingwood person, you may also have some additional insight into Neeld. You would also have witnessed the way he has managed the situation with Liam over the last few months.

It's been highlighted many times on this board how poor our recruiting has been over the last 10 years or more. Apart from Frawley no other 1-25 draft pick has cemented a place in this team. That's about 20 early picks wasted. If even a third of these picks, particularly under the Craig Cameron era were A or B Graders we wouldn't be having this conversation now and Neeld probably would't be Coach..
