Cloke or Goddard, Dal Santo, Sewell??

Ok everyone is going to have divided opinions but, i went last nights match to take a mate who is a cats fan, and from what i saw of cloke i thought he worked really hard up the ground, plenty of marks and tackles. Also he physical prescence was really impressive and if he was to join us he and Clark would be a great combination up forward.

On the otherside of the coin we need good mids with leadership bad. But assuming we will finish in bottom 4 this year we are going to draft Jack Viney and a few more mids.

For me Cloke gets the nod.

Cloke for his skill and youth. The others are heading towards the end of their careers. We want a big recruit that will be with us for 6 years plus a la' Clark.

Throw the kitchen sink and more at Cloke.

Clark is being paid $1m this year, but only $600k for the 3 years after that. This year, even with Clark, still only paying 92.5% of the cap. We have pre-paid so many contracts that we have money to literally burn.

Clark + Cloke would be a killer combination, both with 7+ years to go at the top.

We have to trust that we can develop the likes of Trengove, Viney, Gysberts etc into stars

That sums it up for me too!

I'm starting to understand what i think they're trying to do. Workrate.

Watts & Co have no one who works hard enough @ the MFC, to give him/them the incentive to do likewise. To push themselves to their limits to get a game.

If that's Watt it takes to get our kids to grow, then go for it...

Raise the Bar !

No brainer, Cloke all the way.

Really we shouldn't be looking at anyone that's over 25 years old.

I see players like property - invest for the future, with a long term outlook.

In terms of a mid - I like the idea of developing our younger guys.

I would go either Sewell or Cloke. They are a little younger than the others and both give us something we desperately need. Personally I think Sewell by a hair, simply because we have a number of tall options waiting in the wings at the moment. That being said, Cloke is a hell of a player, and has a reputation as a massively dedicated trainer. That's the sort of thing that could really help the rest of our boys with their off-field work.

Realistically, either one would be a good pick up.

Brad Sewell is 28 wouldnt say young in comparison tbh

Prefer a midfielder, with Clark, Watts (when he comes good) and Jurrah, we dont really need another forward. so that rules out cloke.

Stanton is free agent apparently, Having a great year in the mid and would fit well i think, but essendon will do everything in their power not to loose him

Luke Hodge is also free agent this year, bit more mature, but would be great on field leader in midfield.

I cant believe people here think that we want or need Travis Cloke when we have a midfield devoid of stars and that is miles behind the rest of the comp. What good is having two high paid forwards standing about all day if we enter our forward 50 half the time our opponents do? madness... Defensive pressure would be helpful in our forward 50 rather than another tall forward to clog it up.

The cloke thing is a smoke screen.

midfielders all the way - and quality ones - ones from clubs that have won premierships recently or that want to return to Victoria.

who is our second best goal scorer this year? i bet they have about 4 goals in 7 matches.

edit - Jones a midfieler 7, Howe 6 yes

Dunn 6 and Bate 5 who most want delisted.

not terribly exciting

I doubt cloke would have many either mate, you cant kick goals when the ball doesnt even make it to you. Delivery is the key.

Cloke has had a few good years but he took a LONG time to get there. We have some players that MIGHT be in the same boat. Time will tell, but in the meantime the game is won by the midfielders

Not doubting this fact, but we will get Viney and a top 4 pick most likey ass top mids, then we still have Blease, Gysberts, Jones, Trengove, Morton, Moloney, Magner, Mckenzie

I think our mids can come on in 2 years, and yeah a Sewell will be nice for teh right price but that price will be huge to get them from a premiership team imo

Just like Clokes is

Couldnt see this posted elsewhere (apologies if someone has mentioned it)

Brereton mentioned on SEN tonight that he called Scott Watters today because he had heard the rumour that Goddard's manager went to the saints today to inform them that he had received an offer that he would have to recommend to his client.

No mention of the club that made the offer, the amount in question, or the length of the contract.

Apparently Watters paused and then went on to say we can't discuss player contracts with the media or words to that effect

Dunno if the MFC are the club that has put the offer out there, perhaps we are not as interested in Cloak or Boak, and have been working on this behind the scenes.

Goddard turned 27 this year. So could the Dees have turned to Goddard with say a long term contract 3-4yrs for 700k+ ?.

Thoughts? I would prefer making a move on Goddard I think rather than Cloke, but I don't know what sort of role Goddard would play at the Dees.

For what it is worth, people on BF believe that Freo are the club trying to lure him over, with Ross as coach, and they are resigned to missing out on Cloke

RR Goddard would not be commanding a 1.1 mil per season price tag, and for all the people saying we need to build a midfield, Goddard can certainly go in there,.... as well as forward or back.

27 yrs old means you still can get a good 3-4 years from him you would imagine.

Cloke is definitely in a slump, and he will get better.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
