THE 4 DRAFT PICKS WE HAVE

Hey guys so obviously we have a huge huge hole at Full Forward/CHF that we are trying to get Mitch Clark to fill.. and Jamar is getting on in age...

I think with the two very high picks (top 10) we are going to get we have to go the best forward and ruck in draft... then with the next two picks in the teens take two speedy midfielders who must have good ball use as we are lagging behind in uncontested possessions this year and lack run and spread..... it is very hit and miss taking a tall later on.. but you can normally still get a great midfielder from 15-20.... and we also get Viney too..... so maybe a backman with a teen pick and one speedy midfielder?

Even the crappiest forwardline can kick goals if given a regular supply of the ball from great midfielders. Since we have the worst midfield in the competition and at least four potential ruckman already, we need to pick up as many mids as we can from this draft. Some midfielders know how to play a crumbing role also, which would be killing two birds with one stone.

I would be blown away if we don't take midfielders with at least 3 of our first 4 picks.

Absolutely we have invested too many draft choices trying to find the CHF of the century, but

It's our mid field that is a shambles with holes everywhere.

I believe I read somewhere that we are the tallest team in the AFL. Why would we go for more talls?

We definitely have the AFL's worst midfield. If we don't go for the best mids in the draft with our best picks, we're crazy.

4 picks??????

I've seen this a few times. Are some people under the impression we'll get a priority pick??

The OP seems way off the mark.

our second rounder will still be around 22 so useful, but yeah 3 first rounders, and maybe Viney as the 4th

Midfielders with all our first round picks IMO. Hawks, Blues, Cats, Eagles and Pies are all top teams due to there mids. I honestly think our forward line would be quite effective if we had any of those midfields supplying them.

When:

- we desperately need classy ball-winning mids

- we'll probably have to use our very first pick on Viney

- we're likely to have 2 picks inside the top 5 in the draft

- the players generally regarded as this early stage as being in the top 5 are all ball-winning mids / utilities

it's a bit strange to see the OP say we should use them on a KPF and ruckman, then 2 speedy mids "in the teens", when at least 1 of those 4 will be Viney who doesn't fit those descriptions.

In the end, I don't think I'm too fussed about having to use our first pick on Viney.

We'll still have access to guys like Stringer, Toumpas, Vlastuin, Josh Simpson, Haynes, Shaw, Grundy, Kennedy.

Then you have Atkins, Wines, O'Rourke, Menzel, Plowman (dees supporter), Mayes, Irra... it goes on.

Garlett should be a freak, but was kicked out of AIS and now suspended from his club in WA for disciplinary issues - I think our first 4 picks will be too high for such a risk.

Some serious talent to choose from.

No, we've go young tall forwards layered on, with Clarke as well to top them.

We need Mids,,,, power Mids & small forwards. and a quick classy H/B - Wing type.

Watch West Coast or the Dockers pick him up at pick 20 and catch the rest of the league with their pants down once again.

Maybe, but what else can you do?

Select him top 5 and hope it was all a ruse?

So much rubbish. Just pick the best player available, which will be a mid. FORGET about pace, just find a midfielder who can win the ball and find the ball. If he has pace well its a bonus. So much crap about pace and athleticism etc etc bla bla bla. Just find me the best dam FOOTBALLER with a good football brain.

Conduct a thorough interview with the lad and actually get to know him rather than take him on face value. Who knows? If we did that a couple of years ago, we might have picked up a neat young kid called Dustin Martin.

Doubt it.

He had question marks while Scully & Trengove had none.

If he's part of some subterfuge to let him stay in WA, do you really think he'd interview well?

For our first & second round picks & the 2 compensation picks I'd be looking for.

Viney with either our round 1 or 2 pick, hopefully 2nd.

Garlett with our compensation pick after 9th place getter (pick 12) if he falls that far. Don't let West Coast or Freo play everyone again.

Compensation pick after our 1st round choice, best available, preferably outside midfielder with pace and can use it.

First or Second Round pick (whichever we don't use on Viney) same as above.

With all of our talls I wouldn't worry to much about drafting in anymore at this stage.

wow ok.... i still think we need a gun forward to get us through... we will see:)

You're taking the pi$$ a bit here surely? First, you say we need a gun forward, we've just gone out and spent some $600k on one, who is doing what we need him to do - kick goals.

Then you start a thread saying we need to get a key forward, but then you start anouther thread asking if we should play Sylvia as a permanent full forward.

Is it school holidays?

I can't see how this will "probably" happen. I think it's more likely that we will use our 2nd round pick on him, espeically given our current ladder position/form, and the fact that he's not earmarked as the obvious number 1 and 2 picks in this draft (and it should remaing that way if the MFC have any balls).

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
