NAB Cup Squad

Based on that squad would love to see this team for the first game

Backs Bennell Sellar Garland Half Backs Nicholson Frawley Grimes Centres Gysbert Moloney Jones Half Forw Sylvia Watts Howe Forw Davey Clark Martin Rucks Jamar Bail Magner I/C Bate Couch Subs Tynan McDonald

Wow you dont even have Jared Rivers or Clint Bartram in that side, you have three players who are still on our rookie list and three debutantes, thank goodness you're not a selector! Also ignoring Matthew Bate who was one of the best three in the intra-club last week and has been training the house down.

People will find any excuse to whinge instead of rejoicing that finally our boys are running out to play.

They would have liked 34 but ended up only taking 29 because they are obviously managing loads and niggles etc.

What would you prefer, they take 5 blokes who aren't 100% and break them before the season starts- give me a break (pardon the pun).

It is also a mickey mouse round the first week of NAB and very rarely will players play all 3 pre-season games anyway.

I would much prefer we have a stronger, better list available for games against real strong opposition in Collingwood and Hawthorn in the weeks to come anyway.

Be happy people...

The big question for me is about the schedule. Wouldn't it make sense for the team with the road trip to play first and last games since they're already disadvantaged by the trip? I can't see us beating Brisbane in the second game no matter what we do with the squad.

The argument against this though Ralph is that there is a school of thought that it is more preferable to have players play 4 continuous quarters like a normal match then play for two, have a long break where you cool down and lactic acid builds up and then get going again. I actually prefer them playing the back to back games.

Whilst they give their all I dont rate either of Rivers or Bartram. I have Bate on the bench in case you missed it. I think at least 2 of the 3 rookies will be on our senior list come round 1. Show me your side so I can provide some constructive feedback.

Would be surprised to see Jamar, Green and Davey play both games. Probably Sylvia as well given his limited preparation.

Interesting interview with Leigh Brown on the Dees site. He talks about it being an opportunity to see how the structures go, moreso than looking at individual players. He did single out Howe and Tommy Mc as being two to watch.

I love the squad.

I think you'll see a lot of switching around.

It's just a practice game and they will try out a few things to see if players click in different roles.

As long as the skills are good and everyone is switched on I'll be happy.

Oh, youre doing the squad for game 1 this week, not round 1. Ahem, whoops on my part.

Anyhow, heres my side from that squad:

B: Bartram Frawley Garland

HB: Grimes Rivers Bail

C: Green Moloney Couch

HF: Howe Watts Bate

F: Davey Clark Petterd

Foll: Jamar, Sylvia, Jones

IC: Martin, Gysberts, Sub:McDonald Sub:Magner

Best possible, with a couple of kids. Set the standard for the season with wins rather than giving kids a game. Let them have a crack

in the Challenge games in a few weeks.

The club obviously think a lot more of Clint Bartram than most fans, as has been said countless times before by others on here.

I am most looking forward to seeing the continued improvement in Tom McDonald.

Thanks Dave. Not much I disagree with in your side. Aside from the inclusion of Bartram and Rivers the only other one I cant see getting games much this year is Petterd. He would be close to my next picked forward, mid and probably back but I find he has deficiencies which put others ahead of him in all spots. He will play games this year and will star in a few but I find those couple of games are not consistent enough for mine.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing how Matty Warnock goes tomorrow night; have always had a bit of a soft spot for him and would like to see him do well.

I'm with you there. Met him a few times and he's an all-round good bloke. You can't blame him for seeking better opportunities, and GCS seem to be a perfect fit for him. That being said, I'll be even happier if he plays well in every game except for those against us when Mitch Clark gives him a towelling ;)

I know some people who played with him at Sandy and were extremely surprised he ever got drafted! That being said, he did have some good games and showed some attributes for a good defender.

I will however have complete confidence in Clark smashing him if they play on each other. Warnock can defend OK, but will get outmuscled sooner or later and if he wins the ball, well, I think he might hit his melbourne teammates more in this game than he ever has!!!

I am looking forward to seeing a forward line with players staying in it. The development of JB to someone who gets the ball 20 times a game and see how well J. Howe has come on.

I think you may have nailed it GTG.

That looks a pretty well balanced line up.

Never really been a fan of starting freshies on the bench.

I'd have Davey in this team just to get a gauge on his attitude.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
