The Gaffer coming home?

Ok, how about I put a value to these 'awesome picks' we suddenly have.

The numbers, assuming we finish 8th, will be:

Best Case Scenario: Picks 11 and 13.

Reality: Picks 13 and 16.

There are other compensation picks to go around and there will be more (looking at you PA and GC).

They are 'teen picks' no matter what happens and guess what?

Here are the 'teen picks' from the now famous 2001 draft:

10 Sam Power

11 Richard Cole

12 Brent Reilly

13 Nick Dal Santo

14 Ashley Watson

15 Barry Brooks

16 Rick Ladson

17 James Kelly

18 Shane Harvey

19 Jason Gram

We better pick Dal Santo and Kelly...

No you have put a number to the picks - not a "value" the value is fluid. Taking the West Coast as an example pick 3 in one draft buys you Chris Judd in another draft it buys you Chris Masten. Both are picks 3 but I know which one was the better "value".

Wet Coke are not going to give this kid away, if he is a genuine gun. I do not have access to Foxtel so have only seen a couple of Gaff's games, hence i have often used the word "if"

How good is this kid? Has anyone watched his career closely?

If he is a genuine pick 4 then we will have to pay a high price.

between Shuey and Gaff they have the potential for another Judd / Cousins combo

I think Shuey is worth the hype he gets over here and Gaff also seems to have the skill and class required to make it

Thanks. If that is true then i have no doubt we will have to pay TOP $$$ Wet Coke are not going to lose another A grade combo without a long fight.

If Gaff says he wants to come to Melbourne Football Club one compo pick should close the deal. If he says he wants to come back to a Victorian club it will take both picks.

Agreed mostly. It would surely depend on his wishes, and that of the competing clubs opposing offers secondly.

Not that many IMO could outbid us re trade options, unless E'd wanted to give a player + pick.

The Dons a re rebuilding.

Any Victorian club that finished below us except for Essendon (whose 1st rounder will be tied up in F/S for Daniher) can out bid one compo pick. If Hurley goes to GWS, then factor Essendon back in. It's critical to sell Gaff on MFC.

I don't know that in a Powerful draft year, that a club would want to take a risk of like for like, Unless the Gaff has a blinder Year.

If Hurley goes I don't think Essendung can use any compo pick till following year (or if they can at a big discount)

I think the only reason they were discounted last year was so that GWS didnt get compromised in any way. If they get them this year i think it would be open.

Unsure though.

Don't they have to be activated before a season starts? We have to activate ours before a ball is kicked in anger so I'm not sure anyone recieving picks this year will be able to use them.

It was possible to activate picks awarded last year immediately after they were awarded - there's a recent post on the site explaining this.

http://demonland.com...post__p__525396

Anyway picks can be traded even if they're not activated.

I think JT is right, the use delayed to the end of the 1st round only applied to 2011 when GWS had their special draft picks (and 2010 for GC). If Hurley went to GWS on $1M/year Essendon would get Tier 1 compo and be able to use it in 2012.

And here it is, since I was the one that dug it out >

Here are a part of the compensatory Rules re the use of the picks, >

I hope this helps some.

Melbourne - Round One selection (Tom Scully)

The selection for Tom Scully may be activated by Melbourne after its round one selection in any one of the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings. The selection will be immediately placed behind the Round One selection of Melbourne in that particular season. (I.e, should Melbourne earn the right for selection 12, the compensation selection would be number 13, if Melbourne earn the right for selection four, the compensation selection would be number five etc.).

Should Melbourne wish to activate the selection in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, during the expansion-period Drafts, the selection would be placed at the end of Round One.

For the selection to be activated for the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, Melbourne will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by Friday November 11, 2011.

For the selection to be activated for any of the years 2012-2015 in the NAB AFL Draft of that particular year, Melbourne will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by the last Tuesday of that particular year, prior to the start of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The club has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.

If the club on-trades its compensation selection to another club, the selection may be used in that year's NAB AFL Draft Selection meeting, or in any other year up to the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

WC wont get burned on VIC kids wanting to go home, if they only get offered pick 15 he will be playing for GWS via the PSD imo

Jordie I highly doubt that. You would have to be extremely stupid to allow that to happen if you were WC. If Gaff gives a clear indication he wanted to head home WC will have to pull the trigger just like Brisbane had to with Clark and Adelaide with Gunston. Smoke and mirrors can scare the potential suitors all they want by saying we'll let him go in the PSD but a football department that let a pick 4 leave after 2 years for free is absolutely brainless.

If he wants to leave, it won't take 2 first round picks. It'll just take smart negotiating and a very steady hand to not pull the trigger or call their bluff.

I think you'll find that if Essendon lose a player this year & get a 1st Rnd compensatory pick, they can only use it this year at the END of the 1st Rnd at best, as in the case of past seasons, or hold it for future drafts.

thats good. it explains one thing. We need only "activate" at start of season if WE intend to use pick in draft. Regardless we can still trade and trade recipient can use it that year even if we didn't "activate"

however, unless i missed something, it didn't explain whether any new compo picks awarded to a club this year can be used in the draft this year with or without discounting (as was the case last year)

Yep, the "during the expansion-period Drafts" is a bit confusing, re if this year is considered one.

I understand this D7,

But i feel alot of clubs will be annoyed at this, Judd, especially WC losing high qaulity players back to vic. you cant keep letting them screw you.

Port sent Nick Stevens to the Pre season draft for this exact reason

Gaff is going to be a very, very good player. However, talk of having to give up two compo picks is crazy stuff. No club would do that for a small framed young midfielder. 1 high pick and a player would get the job done.

One compo pick and who? They would have to be someone of note, why do people think picks and discards are appealing to anyone? And why are people so greedy with these compo picks? We got two for $ully- trading two for a "very, very good player" seems par for the course. Where is your logic?

In my opinion, high player turn-over (ie from two high picks, rather than one known player) is the best way to address all your personel needs. I think we should use our picks in the actual draft, so that we can maximise our chances of picking and developing players to play the way we want them to.

basically, we still have room in our cap to land one more 'big fish'. so i'm expecting melbourne to make a play for any talent under 25, could be interstate players wanting to come to vic and using our compo picks as part of the trade. as this year's draft is good though, it's no big deal if we don't because we wil most likely activate both taking Viney with our first round pick, then two others in the first round.

Yep so true,

If we can get one of the best midfield prospects which Gaff is from the last 3 drafts then i would be stoked. These compo picks could be great if we land 2 Gysberts at best imo but then we will be picking up 3 good mids. Gaff and Viney could be 2 great mids which is the difference.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
