The Scully infatuation makes this club look sadder, weaker and more desperate than anything.

He became just another AFL player the day the GWS stuff was made official as far as I'm concerned, it's disappointing the vast majority on here can't seem to see it the same way.

We got 2 high draft picks for the inevitable sell-out, have some patience and watch how those picks play out.

Looking at this thread is the equivalent to watching a rejected prom-date who can't seem to get over it.

It'd be interesting to see how they handle it if they did get 2 (or even 1). It's been widely reported how much HWSNBN's contract is worth. So any of those players mentioned would be expecting at least that much. That's a fair ol' whack of their salary cap tied up in a handful of players.

I would suggest if GW$ want 1-2 maybe even all 3 of the above mentioned players...The AFL HQ will find some hidden calico Bags of $$$ somewhere.

The more I think about it the more I think that GCS have done it the right way. They've recruited some stars and solid players already in their prime or just beyond it. So when it comes to resigning these players they'll be on short short contracts towards the end of their careers. So it should be relative easy to work around them and their emerging high draft picks that would be commanding more money. This means that they can be somewhat competitive from the word go and be able to hold onto their good young players long term.

On the other hand some of the GWS recruits will be coming into their prime when their contracts expire. What's going to happen then? What sort of money are they going to be asking for considering the money they have already been given? How will free agency effect them? How are they going to fit them and their young emerging stars into the cap?

I have grave doubts. On one hand that puts a smile on my face, but deep down there is the issue of the long term health of the AFL. Half of me wants to see a spectacular GWS crash and burn. The other half can see that a competitive GWS can only help the success of this code.

It's a quandary.

I'm not infatuated. i just watched a guy lie to an entire competition whilst standing alongside his team mates and Jim Stynes. I will read posts about him, occassionally write stuff and boo louder than I have ever before everytime he goes near the ball when he's playing at the Home Of Football. If you take the view that every club is vulnerable to losing one of their better players, I'm relieved that ours has been Scully - and that we got 2 compo picks (and, in a round about way, Mitch Clark) for him.

We also now command the moral high ground on this issue, something that wasn't totally with us immediately following season 2009.

No they don't, I didn't phrase that well but I think it's more likely to be Hurley, Essendon have been trying to sign him since last season and he is holding out till the end of this season. Sounds familiar. I was pretty sure Pendlebury would be the one but you are right on the cap, they can't have it all and Sheedy has often spoken about building the team from the spine. I don't think Goddard fits their blueprint, but who really knows, Sheeds apparently hasn't met or even heard of Hurley, Pendlebury or Goddard.

I would expect Goddard to go if the Saints continue their slide down the ladder. Why not cash up if the offer is there? Pendles has won a flag and achieved a good deal at the filth and with the one year contract ext, he's obviously considering it.

Not for the first time i agree with you Ron, not so much about the moral high ground, more that we've had our GWS hit and can focus on this season without what has been acknowledged by the club as a major distraction. I for one feel sorry for supporters from other clubs who might have to go thru the sort of drama we endured last season, but better them than us. To paraphrase my second favourite PM Scully was the defection we had to have
