This is excellent news from the MFC and a big pat on the back must be given to the board and the administration at the club. This is huge inroads to make the club finacailly stable and strengthen our position in the league.

What we now can't afford is to be one complacent and allow the opportunity to grow and improve our off field and on field positions.

What I can't wait for is for the MFC not to mentioned as a 'poor' club anymore!

In view of the fact that they operated a team in the NEAFL, I think it should be transparent with its books.

1. Does anyone else find it odd that the Melbourne FC website story quotes Michael Gleeson from The Age as if the only way the club found out about the profit is from the media?

2. Does anyone know whether Melbourne FC received special funding from the AFL last year? if so, perhaps we are still a 'poor' club. But hopefully moving in the right direction.

We are a poor club, and hopefully it's moving in the right direction with good asset foundations and membership growth.

The Pies are targeting 100,000 members

The Tigers are targeting 75,000 members

The Demons are targeting 40,000 members

So we've got a fair bit of work to do in terms of further membership growth and the growth corridor of the greater Casey region, our club's marketing as well as performing well on the football field will hopefully address membership numbers and revenue streams.

It seems to get lost by most but that funding in part is compensation for the inequities in the draw. If we had a draw like the pies we would more than likely make up the amount we receive through better corporate return, better sponsorship $$$ though grater exposure and in turn more members through that exposure...

Given you seem to understand it, how does the addition of an asset equal profit? Isnt an asset a balance sheet item?

I would have thought the same. Our fixture in 2011 wasn't particularly conducive to making good money out of home games which I believe is an important feature in determining the ultimate bottom line. If we finish with our noses in front and in the blank after that, it's not a bad result.

Port Adelaide has already been financially bailed out by the AFL this year and the league has been in negotiations with Brisbane over its poor financial state. The Crows too were reportedly confronting an unusual financial loss for a second consecutive year.

Also I noted from the membership thread on Ology that the membership renewals at GC are down from 3,685 at this time last year to 1,691 currently, so with Brisbane in financial difficulty and GC not exactly setting the World on fire membership wise the state of AFL in QLD. is not looking great. Brisbane currently have 594 member renewals.

I am sure that there is an accountant or two out there who can explain it fully. Yes, it is a balance sheet item, but it will show up on one side and must be matched by something on the other side. This will result in an extra-ordinary item that will produce an inflated profit. If you could do the same deal year after year, it would not be extra-ordinary. Melbourne have always been pretty good about these sorts of things and are usually up front with the underlying profit/loss without extra-ordinary items.

At least get your facts right. Tigers are targeting 50K members - and are currently at under 4000. Last year, Richmond only had 3000+ more members than us in any case. As for Collingwood ... dog memberships, 3 match memberships etc. etc., but sure, they're the MU and Barcelona of the AFL. With 71K members last year, you'd imagine they'll eventually get to 100K - but it won't be for a year or three.

All clubs membership figures and goal membership tallies are skewed by the newly introduced 3 game membership, the Hawks count all their Tassie Members as full paid up members and they only get a 4 or 5 game ticket.

I went to the Demon shop and asked about new jumpers. The guy said they should be available just before Xmas, they're just finalising sponsorships.
