Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

What was the first VFL/AFL Melbourne game you attended?

Hi guys, i'm new to the board and just thought i'd ask those who can remember, What was the Demons game you attended?

Mine was Round 18, 1981. The main thing i can remeber about the game was that Jacko kicked 4 and Healy and Crosswell 3 a piece. Unfortuantely the Demons lost by about 5 goals, Healy and Paul O'Brien were our best.

I can't remember the first ever game that I attended but I can remember snippets from 2000/2001 and the majority of 2002 BUT my first memory of seeing the Dees was the Elimination Final 2002 vs North Melbourne where Neitz couldn't pluck a mark and then finally taking one in the last and the crowd went nuts. I distinctly remember Daniher saying after the game that he though the siren had gone. The the next week vs the Crows where Green kicked the goal from the pocket at 1/2 time and then that 3rd quarter run that put us back in front. I remember from that night also Yze and Roboo running into each other on the members wing right in front of where i was sitting and number 25 at the time for the Crows was killing us, couldn't miss. I also remember the last goal of the game by Chris Lamb for about 50. Dunno why. Walking home down Powlett Street with my dad and sister copping a gobful from these guys in those apartments right near the 7/11, the old one's and my sister telling them to shut up. Wow, and i was 5/6/7 remembering all this.

EDIT: I do too remember 2002 sorry when we played the Crows and Eagles at Princess Park. I went to both, good memories, Whelan went to the bench with cramp in the last and everyone though he did his hammy vs Crows. They let us onto the ground after the eagles game, Neitz destroyed that game!

1960 Redlegs vs the Tigers at the MCG. My Dad bought me down from the country

We drove down in our black 30 model Dodge 6

Cannot remember when it was but Redlegs got up and I was hooked.

We could not get tickets to the GF but listened on the radio.

Those were the days

1987 - Round 18 v Brisbane Bears at the MCG

Went along with the old man and his close friend for the first time, watching the Demons roll a sheizen Bears outfit by 54 points in front of a paltry home crowd at the G. We were sitting well out of the top 5 at the time and Dad's mate earned a rebuke for telling me in jest that 'this was the start of our march to the finals'.

Little did we know ....

I'll never forget that fairy tale run. Some of the best, most exciting weeks of my life. Anyone who witnessed that run will always believe that until you're mathematically out of it, you're never out of it.

No memory? not a thing?

Make something up!!

Only kidding

I have a vague memory of Ron Barassi and another player, possibly Bluey Adams, running toward the city end in front of the old Members' Stand (which to me at the time probably seemed like it was full of very old members) and hand passing back and forward to each other. But that's it.

I could say I remember Gabo's run and Froggy Crompton's goal...but alas I don't.

But, a bit off topic, I do have a memory of the 1988 GF. I remember sitting near a box in which the Prime Minister, Bob Hawke was sitting in the front row, and the Opposition Leader, John Howard, was sitting in the row behind. Hawkie was his excitable, ebullient self. And John Howard was asleep.

I was there at the G with my dad. Even at the home game against the eagles which I think was a week or two earlier where we commenced the 6 week run.

The first game I can remember was the match highlights of Melbourne v Richmond when World Of Sport replayed Barassi allegedly hitting Roger Dean prior to the '63 finals, resulting in a costly four week suspension. I can also remember a snippet of a Melbourne player, John Lord I think, handballing over a Magpie player's head to a team-mate in the goal square who popped it through in the '64 second semi. The first game I went to was in 1970 (Form One) when we caught the Springvale- Richmond train in to the G. Used to love that train trip. We would make up games like taking turns to remember cigarette brands, or cars . The game would start with a tin of koolmints and the last quarter of the reserves. Parke and Dillon were my early legends. League Teams on Thu. night on the radio was always a highlight with the teams being read out, "Alves, Wells, Clarke" etc

I have vague memories of a game in 1997 (Yes, I'm a baby compared to some of you) against the Eagles but most of my early footy memories are in 1998. A game against Essendon when they thrashed us by 60+ points and I balled my eyes out for the rest of the trip home. Meeting David Schwarz (who was injured at the time) in an elevator before a game and turning as red as a tomato while my dad politely introduced me to him and I could barely mumble a 'hello'. And Jeff Farmers screamer against the tigers (who we thrashed!) - my dad later convinced me that he was screaming "BROCCOLI" when he took the mark (because that's what gave him the strength to take marks like that) and since then I've always eaten my broccoli.

Favourite Players: Gary Lyon and Matthew Febey (because we had the same name).

Round 1 1971. Demons won by over 100 points. As a kid watching through the picket fence thinking "How good is this!"

Still waiting for number 13.

Gee WYL I thought I could remember every game the Dees have won by a big margin because there is only a few but that one i have no memory of at all.

Not saying it did not happen just have no memory.

In the late 60,s and early 70,s we were very ordinary My main joy was watching the Pies lose finals.

Probably still had the 70 GF in my brain.

Melbourne v Bulldogs 1988 circa round 19 at the MCG.

We lost by a couple of goals but have virtually no memory of it as I was only 6.

Anyone recall this game?

I remember this game very well I had my daughter with me, half way through the last quarter I noticed she was barracking for the Dogs.

Not sure what hurt the most losing or my daughter abandoning the Dees.

She told me on the way home in the car she wanted to barrack for a team that were winners.

Shortly after picked Essendon and has been with them ever since.

We often laugh about it.

It's a little complicated, but the first Melbourne game I went to was in 1990 vs Collingwood at Waverley. I went with my Nanna, who was a Collingwood supporter and I was expected the follow suit. However, Something must have happened that because even though the Demons went down by 52 points, within 6 months I was a Melbourne fan.

First game was the '87 Elimination Final. A ripper to start with. My parents were very casual Demon supporters and living out in the Dandenongs were not interested in attending. Despite their apathy I was very much a Demon.

A family friend that bleeds red & blue FINALLY took me as a 10 yr old, after the Dees astonishing run to the finals had everyone in footy talking. I remember that time very very fondly indeed.

Just Matthew but it was enough to make him my favourite.

Haha not really although it would be nice have won a premiership or three. Once when I was about 5 I said that I was now a Western Bulldogs supporter and he replied coolly that "No child of mine will support an AFL team other than the Melbourne Demons while they live under my roof, so I'm sorry but you'll have to leave."

Needless to say, I quickly found my faith for the Melbourne Footy Club.

I was at that game MFC vs Adelaide. Whelan was having an awesome finals series but sat out that game with i think a hand injury. I saw him walking around inside the G on level 1 SS looking totally peed off an hour before the game , never seen such a dejected looking fella. TJ ripped it up that game running forward of the ball and Yze and Robbo tried to get in on the act and ran into each other and we totally lost momentum. Danners must rue that as a lost opportunity cos we were flying. I was in the SS and saw them running into each other sitting in pretty much the same seats i sat in and watched Schwarz try to out manouvere one to many Sydney opponents. Both shattering incidents.

My first game was Melbourne v WC 1988. I think the Dees won.

I can't remember exactly, but somewhere in the mid 1950s, possibly 56, a Melbourne v Fitzroy game at THOF.

It ended up as a draw 11.11.77 each.

When I get time inwill trawl through the web and find the exact date and match details.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
