NAB Cup Draw 2012

Gee the AFL are trying to make the most of the Melbourne v Brisbane rivalry... after both clubs amicably agreed to terms on a trade for Clark. Numpties.

The Melbourne v Collingwood perhaps has a little more bite. It will also be a good test to see where we're at.

A few interesting things to note from the fixture:

Skilled Stadium is now officially Simonds Stadium for those who haven't heard.

GWS and Gold Coast meet at Lavington (Albury) in Round 3

Port Adelaide v Fremantle possibly to scrap over the fat rats clacker's cup at Victor Harbour in Round 3

Essendon v St.Kilda at Wangaratta in Round 2

Sydney v North Melbourne at Bruce Purser ? in Round 2

Adelaide v Brisbane at Alice Springs in Round 2

North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs at Nth Ballarat in Round 3

West Coast v Port Adelaide at Mandurah in Round 2

edit: Bruce Purser is at Castle Hill.

Have you been to Metricon since the upgrade Vagg? Would like to know your thoughts. I've been there once, sat behind the goals/scoreboard end, thought it was great. A lot more atmosphere than the Gabba!

Yes, Billy. Went to the Suns vs. St Kilda match with my daughter and a bunch of her friends. Yep, very impressive set-up. The playing surface has always been great. But, now with the new stands, it's a first class facility. Would just be good to get the stands put up all around the ground. Think that's supposed to happen if we get the 2018 Commonwealth games.

I had also been keen to see Skilled Stadium (the stadium at Robina built for the Thugby). But, absolutely no desire to go to a thugby match. So, when a mate invited me to join him for a soccer match recently, I jumped at it. Again, a top facility (albeit with a toy, rectangular playing field! LOL)

The Gold Coast is therefore now blessed with two stadiums that are both first class. But, it's the one with the REAL footy field in the middle where I'll be showing up the most often...!

I have been to both quite a few times, obviously living here, and think the Gabba is a much better ground. I just think that the complete grandstand holds in a lot more noise whereas at Metricon the gap as well as space under sails maybe opens it up for less echo?! Anyway, off topic, and I suppose I havent been to a 'full' Metricon yet. But regarding the NAB fixture, wrapped I'll be able to trundle down to get an early taste!

Strange that no nab cup games will be on free to air.

That's a Fox Sports page - maybe the games not denoted "Fox Sports" are FTA on 7? Maybe different games into different markets where the times clash? Maybe on 7-two?

Anyway ours are all on Fox Sports

Or maybe you're right and those games are just not on TV

I thought I read somewhere that no games that have been fixtured would be on FTA. No word on the GF though.

Interesting, are there many that go to the games, non Gold Coast fans? Is this the hope that they'll get GC to be fan's second club?

Will be great to see some preseason footy for a change.

Havent been to Metricon yet so should be good. Hopefully we win which would make it even better.

With any luck there might be an open training session where we can meet the players.

Bring on season 2012.

I'm happy that we get a couple of games in Melbourne vs Pies and Hawks. Will be a good experience for the players and will hopefully be a good test of our new hard style under Neeled.

Interesting format, can't say it lends the same sudden death tension though. But probably confirms what everyone sees of the competition.

Yeah, Brisbane was my second team, but they've now dropped to third behind the Suns. Gotta encourage the local mob. I think there's a lot of Gold Coasters of the same mind-set. It's just great to have a team based locally, and put it up to the raving thugby-ites...

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
