I still don't understand why the result is to be announced after the trades are finalised on Monday 17 October.

If you wanted to trade John Smith for O'Meara as part of the mini draft and had to wait to find out the result, then you might find yourself holding a player you don't want after the trades if you happen to be the losing bidder.

I think it will be pretty clear after the trades are announced as to which club will take which player. The most important point is that those trades have to be done by Thursday at 5pm otherwise based on experience they would not have been done until the final hours of trade week thus meaning other deals would be in limbo and might not get done.

If they offer Pick 4, IMO that won't be enough to get it over the line. It'll take more than pick 4 in this years draft.

O'meara is all the rage atm and Crouch to an extent, and it would be nice to get them, but we may have a better chance at getting a top pick in next years mini draft.

GWS will have just as exciting a pool next year for the clubs to drool over imo, new 17yo who are just as highly rated, so i would assume it is in GWS's best interests to leave 2 picks to have clubs bid for next year?

2 this year and another 2 next year, my point being that clubs might use them on trades ect this season, or for the mini draft this season, leaving us with the only truly valuable picks next season?

The downside is this player wouldnt be on our list for what 2 whole years from now?

Not certain but I would guess, journo's knowing O'Meara is sought after and looking at the Draft Order as to who has first pick after GWS. We all know they work of assumptions and putting 2 and 2 together to get 5!

You're not trading for players - you're trading for picks.

Conceivably a team could trade for pick 1, but choose Crouch as their first choice not O'Meara.

It's like us trading for pick 15 in the ND - we don't know who we'd take at 15 until draft day.

1 more thing - how can a club be given Pick 2 for example if there are two picks to be 'awarded' next trade week? Suddenly Pick 2 becomes Pick 4 and Prendergast has an apopleptic fit as he is pushed down two places.

What incentive is there for clubs do get this done this trade week if they can be gazumped a year later?

What?? I've no idea where this notion comes from that it is a tender situation.

It's simply like Sheedy deciding he doesn't want to use pick 1,2,3 or 5 this year.

He trades them to whoever he likes based on what they offer.

He picks the deal that gets the best return for GWS, just like MFC would if they decided to out pick 12 on the table.

There's not mystery beyond that.

If so it is GWS best interest to trade off 3-4 of these players this year to gain picks in 2012 and beyond. There is a good chance GWS will receive a priority pick in 2013 because they have no chance winning a game for 2 years so they can keep the best kids to themselves.

I don't think there's a direct quote from GC but it's been in the press (yes I know) including today's Age trading preview:

It's no big surprise - if they rate O'Meara (who has been touted top 2 in 2012 draft) higher than who they expect to be available at pick 4 this year they'll do it.

It'd give GWS 1,2,3,4,5 this year and they might be interested if they are having trouble splitting 3 and 4.

Alternatively our 2 x mid-1st round compo picks good for the next 5 years may appeal more.

I guess in that case the question comes down to would you swap our compo picks for pick 4 this year?

That's a very good question - it hasn't been announced what's happening with PPs next year and under the current rules GC, Port and Brisbane are all in the frame for a beginning of 1st round PP if they win less than 5 games. These picks would be before GWS first pick in 2012 even if they finish last with 0 wins which is likely. The AFL have said they're going to revisit the PP rules so the beginning of 1st round picks may disappear.

If GWS was thinking they love O'Meara and expect to finish 18th next year and therefore not trade any picks this year (save all 4 trades for next year) so they can take him in the 2012 draft they'd want to know what was happening with the PPs.

I'm replying to questions asked, that I didn't think had quite been answered clearly or sufficiently.

Or in some cases I missed the answer being given on first skim.

Either way, it's a minor issue.

But it has raised other issues in my mind.

The process is far from clear. I'm sure there are aspects that haven't been considered by the AFL.

For instance, the draft picks - how is it determined which pick is traded for?

GWS will need to field offers stricly for pick 1, then only once pick1 has been given can they field offers for pick 2 and onwards.

Otherwise, you could get a team bidding for pick 2 and winning it, when the pick 1 asking price is deemed too high.

In the end if pick 1 doesn't get traded due to too high an asking price, in the absence of a pick 1, pick 2 BECOMES pick 1.

Or, there is a firesale to move pick 1 and a strange situation occurs with a team paying subjectively more for pick 2 than has been paid for pick 1.

Or, depending on how it is policed, a team could bid for and win what they believe will end up being pick 1, then it turns out to be pick 2 and they've paid much more than they were prepared to for a player.

It just leaves open issues and could be very messy.

Or clubs will be extremely hesitant to make a move & it'll be a failure.

The thing is, it could set a maximum bid for picks that teams aren't prepared to go over or near, but GWS thinks they are worth, so nobody moves.

They would, they can get maximum value trading them both years imo

Also a kid named Lachie Whitfield is meant to be as good as O'Meara next year, but misses the eligibility for the mini draft so they will be able to draft an amazing talent regardless

Clubs will put up their 'bids' and GWS will accept a number and the order and the clubs can then decide whether winning Pick 3 is worth the price.

Really agree with this - give up one pick for a player we would think would be a top 5-7 in next years draft. Keep the other for later on. No way shold we give up both picks for a child!
