The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

i've been sucked into posting on this thread again!

Sign him up! and im happy for green to be the skipper again in 2012.

As bad as his year was i dont think there is anything to gain from changing captains. If anything, stripping green of his captaincy now could create a rift between some in the playing group and the new coaching staff. At the very least They should hold off until the end of the preseason until they make any rash decisions on who will captain the club in 2012

Any rift that may create would be valuable in weeding out those that aren't part of where this team needs to be going.

It's blatantly obvious Green is no Captain, he's borderline leadership group material.

If anyone has issues with him being stripped of the captaincy, then they're effing blind, and have no idea what a real leader looks like.

We don't need players running the club with their petty admin issues and inflated egos, we need real leaders on the field.

EDIT: I got a tad trigger happy there (looks at avatar) and perhaps should have digested the whole post I was responding to. My apologies, I agree that the decision does not need to be made now.

I agree with this. Under the new regime any 'rift' that emerges is the sole fault of the player/s involved and as such they should be shown the exit door.

It's time for this lot to knuckle down, receive orders and do what they are told. That goes for anyone from Brad Green through to the bootstudder.

FWIW I dont think it matters who skippers the side.... any side

At the end of the day, if a player needs his captain to step when the chips are down up to motivate him to do the same then its a pretty sad state of affairs.

If Neeld is as much of a hard arsed straight shooter as we are lead to believe, then every player will be playing a selfless brand of footy, doing the 1%ers - effectivley doing all of the things that we want to see a captain do...

Give green another year, to strip him of his captancy would create another media circus and IMO there isnt much upside

And they will hold off until pre-season, although probably not the end...

But he should win back his captaincy just like Maxwell has to do at the club our coach just came from.

And I do not feel he will win it back, and that is why you decide every year.

Leaders change year-to-year as much as the teams they are supposed to lead.

So it's PR reasons?!

It's not an winning argument.

Hell, it's not even cogent.

Brad Green was such a disaster of a leader his biggest contribution was to almost get Schwab sacked by complaining to the board about issues we are not privy to but I am willing to contend I would not agree with.

Given a choice - I prefer Schwab's plan for the immediate future of the footy club over the concerns of the senior players.

But that's beside the point - if you want to argue PR reasons it is a losing battle - he was embarrassing at times this year.

I will struggle to accept his captaincy if he doesn't have to win it back.

Brad Green is Important to Melb.

But I believe the Captaincy may be too big a burden as was seen by this season and the performence he put in

I hope he stays but like with any player at Melbourne no player is bigger then the club and we only wnt players who want to be there.

Discussions currently taking place.I would expect finalisation by end of next week

Who cares about media circus's. Political correctness cares about the Media, so don't make hard decisions for embarrassment.

Move him on with a fresh broom.

Change the Leadership with the very same Broom! >>> New culture over Here, >>>

There's every chance Bruce will be cut from Hawthorn at the end of the year and where will that leave him? I guess a lot on here won't care but I had a lot of time for him and he was still capable of holding his spot with us. Petulance won out and he moved on.

He is now in no man's land, he's no longer a Dee and never was a Hawk; I hope the same doesn't happen to Brad.

No More superannuation retirement funds from the Demons coffers please.

Give Brad 2 Yrs and thats It, front loaded. and see from there.

The sooner we are free from Our players from the former Daniher era, the sooner we can Instill a fresh Culture change. This Is why Green should Not be Captain. Apart from his reluctance to Go Head down.

He is over 30yo and I am not sure why he deserves more than one year after 2011. Front loading makes no sense either

Brad Green should never have been appointed Captain of the MFC. (We all know that)

He is not an on-field leader and he never has been.

Brad Green should be told by the coaching team that he will not have the pressure and expectation that comes

with captaining an AFL side next year. He should be told to re-find his form. Find the skills that drafted him to our

club.

i.e. His goal kicking ability, kicking skills and marking ability. (arguable?).

Those attributes are the reason he is still on our list and he needs to get them back without worrying about carrying

the rest of the playing group along.

Leaders need to inspire the playing group on the field and bring other's into a game. Green doesn't do that.

Moloney or Grimes for me.

If another club (purportedly) wants to offer Brad Green two years and his manager drops that card on the table, let him go.

What's the hold up?

He's not happy with the recent appointments in the coaching department or is he still holding out for that extra year?

Earn it.

Because the year you had last year is definitely not worthy of a 2 year extension. And that's not even taking into account the 30 and over 1 year policy.

Stop being a demanding sook, take your hundreds of thousands for kicking a leather ball around and suck it up princess!

I wasn't aware of Green's protracted grandstanding and unrealistic demands

In view of your obvious inside information and subsequent analysis I think

He should probably just be delisted...

We have a policy of one year after turning 30- no exceptions ot at least at this stage..

His performance was poor but that isn't what convinced me he isn't a leader or shouldn't be captain - it is his awful body language when he is down that can leave one to assume he is selfish and consumed by his own performances.

Another issue is with the related lack of vocal and physical support for his teammates; he rarely talks at the breaks and relies on Beamer to do what the captain should do. I know it is tough to do those speeches but you tell the bloke making the noise to shut up and you fake it the best you can. He puts his body on the line when he has to, but he doesn't get in the face of the opposition when we are being punished as Neita used to, nor does he get himself, and throw himself to the bottom of every pack like Junior did when the 'chips are down'.

He isn't a leader of men and he has trouble mustering the courage to fake it.

He can have two more years.

But none more as the captain of the MFC.

I'll leave it at that as I don't want to harp - but I can sense a softening of position and I will find it unacceptable if Green is not asked to 'win' his captaincy back.

I tend to agree. I watched the 2000 qualifying against carlton a couple of days ago and when brad green started kicking goals Mckay was sent to him and tried to roughen up the young brad green. First player to come in and let Mckay know that it isn't gonna happen was neitz. I think he should sign up but not as captain and just be the player we all know and love and not be the awkawrd smiling captain (On the couch interview) that we saw this year.

It must be a one year contract. And then in 2013 if he is still firing another one year deal etc etc. Free Agency comes in next year-The modern AFL Club cannot afford to have any long term risks on the list....By risk i am saying anyone in their twilight of career on a long term deal.

Brad has already done very well out of the MFC & good luck to him...and i hope he gets a few more years, But each year from now on it must be reviewed.

i started to respond to your post til I read he's over 30. Your right, because for some reason I'd forgotten he is above 30. Too many things on my mind in recent days.

I've just got acknowledgment of a property deal this arvo. That still hasn't settled.

Over 30, yep 1 Yr. - Captaincy.

Bruce was an idiot for leaving and Green would be even stupider to leave. Blind Freddie could see that club had chosen them as it's 2 veterans list players and as long as they could provide more value than the rookie list spot they were taking up, they would be retained. Jamar is at least another year away, maybe 2 from being eligible, so Bruce may have got 3 years here on 1 year contracts.

I like Brad and hope he stays but I support the clubs stance of 1 year contracts for over30's.

As for the captaincy, that's Neeld's decision. I'd be surprised and disappointed if it was playing any part in contract negotiations.

Good luck with the property deal. Cautious times.

In the interests of fairness, it should be pointed out that despite what he himself would no doubt admit was nowhere near his best season, Brad Green took more contested marks than any other Demon player this year. He was also our second highest goal scorer with 37, just three behind Liam Jurrah.

The above does not address the captaincy issue but are just some simple facts to add to the context of this discussion.

I thought it was sad with Bruce he was a long term Demon who gave a lot over a long time.

It will be equal as sad if Green should go.

Add in the ordinary departure of Jnr. and you would have a sad trifecta.

Hope Green stays

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
