I would like to see us have the coaching situation settled before trade week; I wouldn't think it's ideal to go looking for talent while the club appears to be rudderless.

Trade week is bloody important, but it is a risk I am willing to take.

The coach will coach whatever playing stocks we have.

Surely Prendergast and Harrington can work on any 'holes' they see.

I hope Collingwood lose the prelim too. But finding out a week earlier would just be a bonus!

If Malthouse is coming through some handshake agreement already arranged I am quite sure he will be all over trade week anyway

Yep, he's watched us enough already to know who he'd keep, who he'd move on, and what he'd want to bring to the list.

I'm 98% sure we have Malthouse in the bag.

Yes, you are right, but my concern is that the potential trades to bolster our playing stocks, may not wish to come to us if we don't have the coaching position settled.

Yeah, maybe.

That would be disappointing.

But we are trying to tie up a great coach and while this trade week is important - we can risk it to get that great coach and do what we want in the next trade week.

Trade week.

Is that the week where all the clubs try to offload their duds for more than they are worth?

Let's face it, there are very few win/win deals done in trade week.

Likely to be more action this year with clubs who have lost players to GC and GWS able to trade those picks.

What I found interesting is the same day all the papers are reporting Lyon staying at the Saints is done deal, Adelaide for the first time express interest in him. WTF ?

Strange day indeed nutbean.

Do you have a law about this scenario.

Nutbean's law on media - "I'll believe it, when I see it"...

Apologies..couldn't help myself/

As much as it pains me to say it, i'd actually prefer to see the filth win the premiership. That way Malthouse and the filth would come to the conclusion that he has achieved all that he could with them, and both parties would feel that neither owed anything to the other. Allowing for the smoothest transition possible for Mick to come to the Dees. Sure Eddie might huff and puff, just nowhere near as much than if there was a sense of unfinished business, should they not take out the premiership.

Ross Lyon is hardly going to lead into his negotiations with his club by saying...."yeah i might stay, but I might go". Hardly as strong as saying "I'm commited to this club, I have a vision, all I need is you guys to back me". The latter keeps the players support and puts the acid back on the board.

I think StKilda may re-sign him simply because they are concerned about the alternatives available, but he's not staying or gone until I hear the words from his mouth.

Lyon is doing the best possible thing now and keeping his mouth shut until he's done negotiating.

All very well to have the picks to trade, but is there likely to be anything of value on offer?

Could even be less action if GC & GWS pick the eyes out of club discards.

He doesn't have to do any negotiating, he already has a contract till the end of next year, with a promise of an extension.

If MFC are offering him $5M x 5 years it would be a good time to negotiate with the Saints.

I believe his position would be less strong when we've hired a coach that's not him.

Very close.

When it comes to contracts and signings

"i'll believe it when I smell ink on paper."

Edit: I remember this posters on this very site all congratulating each other on the apparent decision of Judd to come to the Dees to have the official announcement 1 day later that we were no longer in the hunt

No.

Collingwood have already done the deed. Wherever they end up finishing, malthouse won't be the coach next year thus ruining his chance at another shot of glory, or ruining his chance to atone for this years early exit. Whatever happens with them he won't be coaching next year and he can either accept that, or move on.

I'm tipping he already knows his next move. Us the punters just have to wait for a suitable time for an announcement either way.

In the meantime I can sit back and laugh at smoke-screen theories. Fair dinkum there are so many smoke screens around this place David Copperfield would be jealous!

If someone (other than your employer) offers you a longer contract on better money, you wouldn't ask for a payrise and an extension?

Fairly well publicised that he's meeting to discuss his contract this week.

If Malthouse is yet to secretly commit, I think it's better for us if the pies don't win the flag.

It would leave him with a feeling of unfinished business, as opposed to satisfied with his achievements.

Don't think it matters either way. If he wins this year he'll be on 4 flags with coaching greats Reynolds, Parkin, Matthews, Barassi, Hafey, Sheedy, Jeans - he'd love to go one ahead of that bunch. Only McHale (7), Smith (6), Hughes (5) and Worrall (5) ahead of him.

Ross will most likely sign with the saints up until 2014/15.

He will be a very loyal man.

He's got nothing to lose with the Saints if signed up. Trade mature bodies and have a crack at another prem next year, or mini rebuild over the next 2-? years.

But, what if they bottom out. Mid bottom 10 next year and it turns into a full rebuild of the playing list. He said it himself, "Ä new era".

OR

A great contract of 5 years with the chance of extending based on performance, with a list people are very curious about and not to mention the upcoming draft selections. It would be like being a kid in a candy store coaching GCS (bluey) and Melbourne next year and beyond. The next Melbourne premiership coach is going to have a light shine down on him from the heavens. Is that why sheeds wanted a crack before? Dont get me started on Malthouse. And get paid a lazy 5 mil for it.

I think, Ross will be a very loyal man.

The MFC is like Marsha [censored] Brady at the moment. And were not even playing finals.

I hear you. I want to see us harden up and play a great attacking style as well, no doubt its more attractive.

But I know that winning tastes better than losing no matter how we play.

I think we're on the same page.

Yep, absolutely. Play tough & hard, 'beg no pardons' Footy, with the modern twists like pressing & zone where necessary.

But just not make it all defence, with the occasional foray forward.

The game has to survive as well, as a spectacle or there is NO point going to watch. The object it to Outscore the oppsition, then the points are awarded to Us.

Have they made that offer old55 or is it just his management putting that story around?

I have seen nothing from the MFC to suggest that they offered RL a deal of any discription.

It may well be just media talk that his team either planted or help the media waffle along.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
