Strongly prefer a coach with experience and success:

- Choko Williams: great success, great attitude, hopefully senior coach at MFC trumps assistant to Sheedy

- Clarkson: would be great and I'd pitch strongly to him but I reckon he'll sign with the Hawks.

- Eade: unlucky not to win a flag at Sydney and the Dogs

- Malthouse: I was unimpressed with his effort on TFS - it's all about him - he'd require an entourage we probably can't afford.

- Laidley: only maybe

- Roos: unavailable

- Thompson: you're joking

We not only need a head coach but all our assistance coaches should be gone. I would love to get Gavin Brown then add Dean Laidley, they would of worked together at Collingwood, and to help unify our club bring in James McDonald as our midfield development coach.

Something (a lot actually)about Williams that worries me.

After port won their flag, he screwed the club for a massive contract that made him the highest paid coach going around; when he resigned a couple of years ago, his contract was halved.

Did he manage a fractured club or did he fracture it? 'cause he certainly left port in a dire state.

In the press today: he is on $350k at GWS, which goes up to $750k if he takes over from Sheedy. Presumably we'd have to match that, or close.

He didn't get a look in anywhere else after port, so went to GWS on big money as assistant.

No. Just no. He isn't worth the $s, or the risk he brings.

Clarkson and Malthouse are going nowhere . After some thought i reckon Mark Williams would be the man. Number 1 he has coached a flag . I reckon hes our man and he has flagged that hes keen.

I'd be happy with Matthews or Laidley .Roos is my third choice .

Please no:Mark Williams or Rod Eade .

More I think about it, more I want Laidley.

- He did good things with a poor Kangas list and setup (dug the Arden St ice bath himself IIRC)

- He was told by the club not to tank as the club literally could not afford the associated costs

- He still managed to build the basis of a list that is now one of the better young lists in the AFL with names like Ziebell, Bastinac and Swallow in addition to the old guard of Wells, Harvey etc.

- He only left when it was thought no more could be done (Scott's resurrection of the list has probably shown otherwise now)

- He still wants to coach (applied at Essendon last year)

+1

Laidley got North too a couple of preliminary fianals, when he had poor facilities and a below average list that was on 92% of the salary cap. Can only imagine what he could achieve, with our facilities and list....

Well, at least we'll have plenty of candidates to choose from.

They're already lining up - Choco & Laidley have both now unofficially publicly declared their interest...

IMO (after listening to Laidley a lot of recent) he's just uninspiring - in radio interviews he either provides the stock answers you would expect with no keen insight, or he muddles and fumbles his way through answers with a lot of rhetoric and little substance, and just doesn't incite much enthusiasm in me.

I think Mark Williams remains a viable option. Hungry, with success behind him, ruthless, a genuine nutter but not in the smarmy needs-a-punch-in-the-head fashion of a Sheedy, who I still thank God we didn't appoint. I'm with everyone else on the Clarkson/Malthouse train, but in terms of those actively putting their hand up right now, Williams is leading the race for me.

Viney should NOT be appointed Melbourne's permanent coach. That statement has nothing to do with his tactical skills, his determination, his Melbourne FC loyalty or his experience.

It would be inappropriate for him to be coach at the same time as his son joins the playing list. It would form a conflict of interest (and emotions) that neither father or son should be expected to have to cope with. That conflict will eventually become a media issue which will destabilise the club. Nothing surer.

I know times have changed and the media play a much greater role these days, but Norm Smith managed fine with Barassi as his captain. Both Smithy, Barass and some players from that era have all commented that the father /son relationship resulted in Smithy being harder on Barass than his team-mates. If push came to shove, I don't see a problem with Todd and Jack as senior coach and player.

1. Malthouse (currently the best active coach in the land)

2. Mathews (the best football person ever)

3. Lyon (only if viney fails)

4. Viney (only if he wins the remaining games)

Laidley (maybe)

No

Eade - failure

Choco - slightly crazy

Thompson - done

Pagan - one dimensional

Craig - failure

not available

Roos- unmotivated

Clarkson- busy with the hawks

A bit surprised nobody's mentioned Gary Ayres. He wouldn't be first on the list, but he's done a fantastic job with Port. They don't have any big names (well, apart maybe from Valenti???) but seem to be incredibly close and are simply never beaten.

I like coaches who have demonstrated the ability to take their teams a long way with ordinary lists and limited resources.

True...forgot about that one...

I'd love to have Paur Roos at the Dees to instill some of that bloods culture though.

He's the one that could bring the 'hardness required' and 'honest football' to the playing group whilst still maintaining good working relationships with the players,,, and keep the Northern Stand along for the ride at the same time. He's a rare breed.

After thinking further about how we could bring across Malthouse I believe the club should devise a new football department strucure that would appeal to Malthouse. I know for a fact that Malthouse is a big fan of Sir Alex Ferguson, when Malthouse arrived at Collingwood he stated that he wanted to turn them into the man utd of the AFL. The club should consider making a new position the same as a manager in soccer/football. By making a new position as manager at the club it may entice him over even more so than the money on offer may. He would be able to revolutionize the way footy depts are run. There would also be advantages for the club. Malthouse is a person with strong leadership & vision. He would be in charge of not only coaching but putting in place staff for recruiting, coaching etc. It would also solve the CS & CC issue. I think it would appeal to Malthouses ego & it could be a deal breaker.

He has already said he has no ambition to be a career coach and will not apply for the job, but who knows could change his mind after a taste of it, particularly if the players respond well to him and we finish the season well. But have to win 1 of the next 2 because the last 3 were expected anyway.

Not necessarily. The bookies have no idea - Neitz to be coach? And who the hell is Murray Davis??

Until we get a lot closer to the appointment, these odds are meaningless.

And even then...

IMHO think the best coaches appointment is the one thats the best "marriage" for you list

IMHO the next coach appointment will truly tell us where the club thinks we sit

Cat A - Malthouse, Roos, Matthews, Clarkson - they think we need a hard ass & we are ready to go.

Drafting & Trading Strategy - Here and now specific role players, hard nose approach Activity level High

Cat B - Williams, Eade, Laidley, Viney - we are close but we need more time & development

Drafting & Trading Strategy - Seek more development players & keep quality draft picks to top up young talent Activity level Mid - High

Cat C - Neeld, Sanderson, - We are 3-4 years away, we have the core but we still need more

Drafting & Trading Strategy - priority top up kids, much younger role player may seek via draft on needs basis Activity level Mid - low

Cat D - Burns, West, Richardson - Almost a rebuild needed, very close to 5-6 years away

Drafting & Trading Strategy - priority quality kids, Activity level chase picks

I have a feeling we want Cat A ... but we may end up with Cat B due to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ... may marginally depend if we have any forced losses of key players

Just a thought

We should go for best available:

I think you can draw a line throw tried coaches with no premiership i.e. rocket, craig, laidley is a great coach who did the best with what he had so i think he should be considered.

Of the current coaches the obvious choich is malthouse followed by clarkson - if either of these two are unavailable then i would suggest going for the best avaiable untried coach:

In order of my opinion on who would be the best for us:

Watters (Collingwood Assistant)this guy can coach (triple premier coach at subi, has worked with eagles and dockers and has great reports from collingwood.

Neeld (Collingwood senior assistant)malthouses right hand man (glowing endorsement from all at collingwood)

Tudor (Gellong & Sydney assistant formerly at saint kilda)Every club he has been at has played really good footy, glowing reports)

Sanderson (geelong assistant)really highly regarded

Mcartney (Essendon)really highly regarded

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
