Last GREAT Win

Recommended Posts

Was thinking about this the other day following Essendon’s surprise win over Geelong.

When was the last truly GREAT win that the Melbourne Football Club has had. Sure we’ve had a few good and enjoyable wins in the past few years, but I don’t reckon we’ve had a GREAT win in much, much longer. My definition of a great win would be:

Opposition: A strong team in good form or, winning well interstate

Game: Holding on to win in a tightly contest match, or, coming back after being 5 goals down

Importance: Needed to win to make the finals or simply a big game with a big build up

Style: Where we actually played well for 4 quarters and didn’t win because the opposition had a shocker or had key injuries.

The only great win I can think of in the past 5 years was probably the Elimination Final against St. Kilda and we were lucky they had a few guys go down injured.

Both Collingwood games last year would have been great wins but alas we couldn’t get over the line.

Any suggestions?

I think any of the next 4 games are chance for GREAT wins. It would be fantastic for the players, supporters and club in general to have one...

What about when we came back against Freo after being down 51 points a couple of years ago? The game was lost, then we started getting goals. At first, it was just a case of thinking 'well at least we won't be getting a thumping' then the realisation started to sink in that we might actually win this - the last quarter was just heart thumpingly exciting. I know it was not a particularly meaningful game in the sense of ladder positioning etc... but it was a GREAT GAME! :)

Any suggestions?

The 2 Carlton Finals in 1994 & 2000. Beating the Dogs in 2005 when Jeff White kicked a beauty.

But nothing will ever dull the great memory of Round 22 1987....As good as a GF was that day.

We were there....part of September for the fist time in over 2 decades.

Suzanna, IMO the Frementle comeback and Sydney win last year were both good wins. As were the Adelaide and Fremantle wins this year.

All miss out on being GREAT due to level of importance and quality of the opposition.

I think Benno may be right the Prelim win against the Blues in 2000 might have been the last truly GREAT win.

WYL the Dogs game is probably one i'd forgotten, that was a GREAT win.

This is a really good and interesting thread. I agree that the elimination final against St Kilda in 2006 was a great win but the one that really springs to my mind was when we went down to Geelong in late 2005 to keep our finals hopes alive and came back from a sizeable deficit and got our first down there for 20 odd years. Before that though it would have to be the Qualifying final against carlton in 2000. I was a kid back then and i still remember that one very fondly.

St. Kilda final 2006.

Queens Birthday 2006 (match that pitted the 2 best victorian teams against each other) when all the experts tipped Collingwood.

Last 3 rounds of the 2005 home & away season against Geelong, Bulldogs & Essendon to sneak into the finals. Think the combined winning margin in those matches was about 14 points?

Beating St. Kilda in 2004 just after their winning streak had ended.

Beating Brisbane at the Gabba in 2002 with a depleted back line.

And an oldy but a good one! Collingwood at Victoria Park round 20 1992 when they were top of the ladder!

Yes, that Geelong game plus the 1994 and 2000 finals wins over Carlton. My Carlton barracking neighbour was almost in tears after the 2000 Demon comeback.

Round 20, 2005... beating the Cats at the Cattery by one point (99 - 100)

Round 21, 2006 wasn't too bad either with a 94 - 94 draw.

Any win at Skilled Stadium had to be good.

1987 R22 Match vs Footscray

1987 EF Match vs North at MCG

1987 EF Match vs Swans at MCG

1994 finals vs Carlton and Bulldogs

2000 final vs Carlton

Most recently

R4 2006 vs Swans (reigning premiers) on their home strip. Hard uncompromising game where MFC were down to 18 men in the last quarter and won by 5 points. Absolutely superb performance.

R5 2010 vs Bris Lions at MCG. - Bris on top of the time were destroyed by a young MFC that gave the first inkling of the future. The only problem has the impatience of supporters about the maturing of the young talent.

How i wish i could add.....Round 2 2010.

This.

Other than that, Carlton 2000, Geelong 2005 and Freo 2008. Seem like the common three.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
