Austin Wonaeamirri

I love Aussie as a player, and he is among my favourite to watch when in form. Sadly this has not been the case of the last 18 months or so, due to injury and personal tragedy etc.

I do not think he will be with the Demons for much longer, although I would be happy to be proven wrong. I think the pull of returning home to the Tiwi's and being with his family who are no doubt still mourning their losses will be too strong for Austin to stay at the Demons in the long term.

What are people's thoughts on this young guys future??

I think hell be back for sure. Time home will do him good no doubt. Long term the opportunities at afl level and at mfc will def bring him back i reckon.

I really hope so! But his duty to family and community could drag him back up there.

well time will tell . One thing i can say is i worked in arnhem land for a fair while and footy is everything. I know the tiwi s is the same. As much as it might be good to be home for a while i think he has had a taste and will be back. sets a great example for his community by doing so..

I think this is a pretty horrible thread - "hey everybody, let's speculate on the kid's future!"

I don't see any good that can come from this discussion.

Leave it be.

I agree with Artie. Pretty sure every reasonable person understands that if it was them they would have a tough choice to make, so all I want for Aussie is for him to take his time and hopefully he wants to come back better than ever. If not then I hope we can keep supporting him. But it's not for us to speculate what his decision will be.

What is so horrible??? Nothing wrong with hoping that one day in the future we can all see the Austen in an MFC Jumper again Fist Pumping.

He is part of the club....as he is part of his family.

There seems to be a lot of speculating going on lately. At least nobody in here has stated speculation as fact yet. Give it time though.

CC said on the weekend that Aussie's dad's last words to him were to 'embrace your culture', and this weighed on him heavily after his death.

The club has told him that he will always have a spot on the list for him if he wants it.

I hope to see him back at his best on the G, but fully understand if he chooses not to come back.

Thanks Artie. In future we will run all topics past you first to make sure they meet your criteria.

I too fear he won't be back but as said previously by other posters I hope I'm wrong.

I feel for Aussie and am sorry for his loss but sooner or later he's gotta make the decision if he wants to play AFL or not .

Has struggled for fitness since he joined the club and is now on extended leave during the season .

We can't keep a spot on list forever incase he decides to come back at some point .

He can still embrace his culture and play AFL , they are not exclusive to each other .

Pretty sure the exact purpose of this site is to speculate on issues like this. Nothing is being said against the guy or insensitive to his situation, so relax mate.

We can talk in warm fuzzy generalities or we can be brave enough to acknowledge realities.

Whilst I find Aussie very entertaining and when on song dynamic, a little bit of the ol X there , overall he is just another player on the list. This list is developing and there is , for Aussie, a very real danger he wil simply be overtaken and made redundant. Time waits for no man they say. hes no different. I truly feel for the lad. Hes torn, hes unsettled and a littel bit all over the place and no fault of his own its just the cards thats been dealt to him. I empathise with his loss. It can and does weigh heavily. A reality of playing at the elite level that is AFL is that to do so , consistently , you need your head in the right place, your body fit and give 110%. If you dont , someone else will

I think its most magnaminous of the clubn to afford him the offer of holding the door open but there will and must be some time limit on this.We arent a benevolent society were a football club. Yes one with a heart for sure but there are very real and commercial pragmanities that covert such generosities. Im sure his name wil remain on the list til seasons end at which time the club must ask for a commitment.

I wish Aussie all the best whether it be in Red and Blue at Melbourne or at home amongst his family. Good luck mate :)

Couldn't be more ridiculous.

What 'good' comes from any thread on here?

This is an MFC forum, where people are fairly and honestly discussing Wonaeamirri's future. How any of that is detrimental to Aussie himself I have no idea. If anything at least he can see that there are fans out there who want to see him get back to playing football.

Geez.

I think Art was looking for a bit of sensitivity, given some of the vitriol that is spat out on this board on a regular basis, perhaps like me when he read the topic heading he was a bit concerned that some posters could not help themselves and the topic would degenerate into a personal slanging match between a couple of posters.

It is nice to see that both myself and Art's fears are unrealised at the moment.

Personally I would love to see Aussie back and playing, but whatever decision he makes will be fine with me

As stated before all MFC supporters only want the best for him

It's only worth discussing if we know anything, and if we know anything it's probably best not dissected on this forum.

By that logic half the stuff discussed on here should be avoided.

We know nothing about Scully's contract, so we can't talk about that.

I don't know who's going to be picked for this week, so maybe I shouldn't talk about that either.

Come on Artie, this is a forum for fans of this club to discuss what happens with this club. I think this topic is relevant.

agreed

to put the thread back on topic i hope he'll come back to the club before the season is out on the back of watching the boys play port at the top end and the extended time away refreshing him and giing him time to mourn properly.

If he does not come back this year and play very good football (guaranteeing him a new contract), and if he wants to continue at the club, I would like to see the AFL enable Melbourne to move Wonaeamirri straight to the rookie list for next season without have to nominate for the draft on compassionate grounds.

Come on, you're not that stupid.

It's a sensitive issue. It should be treated with respect.

Maybe it's that I don't trust half the posters on this forum to do that.

Either way, there's still very little discussion of the actual topic.

True, I'm not that stupid.

I don't mean to compare the topic of Wonaeamirri to the topic of team selection; one is personal, one is not. However, what I'm trying to say is that, whether personal or otherwise, this is still a forum about Melbourne and its players. I can thus understand why people would want to discuss his future here.

If i recall correctly, there was a rule introduced last year that a player can step away from football for a year on compassionate grounds, and be allowed to rejoin the list the following year.

If we were to try the delist and rookie approach, i very much doubt that any other club would pick him before us.

For a combination of factors, i'd be surprised if he is on our main list next year

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
