A question of cheating

So the accusation by Mick Malthouse came harshly out of the blue when he accused Adam Maric's inquisitive appeal for a goal out of a sea of flailing legs. He waited for the umpires decision and didn't overly press the point. Discussion proceeded through the following week on the media rasing the question of cheating or gamesmanship. This week Dale Thomas was pinged for punching - one match - and several days later when the Pies' heirarchy - presumably including M and M - had had a chance to come up with a story which bore no resemblance to what one could see on TV, they appealed. Of course it was unsuccessful.

Are such things cheating or gamesmanship? Of the two cases - Maric or Thomas - I know which I thought was closer to cheating.

Whether on the field at the G or in the members they certainly know how to grow big mouths down at maggie land.

No No.. Collingwood are the biggest club so they get the most say in the media . The know -all President and coach can dominate all the side issues they want this week .Arizona ,abusive fans ,Dale Thomas getting harsh treatment etc.... It wont change the fact that we will smash them in the clearences this weekend and hopefully on the scoreboard .Let the wobble begin .

Who cheated more? No contest.

In one case in the heat of the contest a player kicks an opponent's hand while the hand was in contact with the ball and thinks he kicked the ball directly. Makes the usual actions a player does when they kick a goal but subsides the moment the ump indicates touched.

In the other, a ridiculous story is concocted in the days after the event which was either a lie or the biggest case of self-deception I've seen. I can understand a player deceiving himself, but how could their Admin self-deceive?

I'm sure they wouldn't have chanced it if there was a possibility of an extra week penalty for challenging.

Stones and glass houses come to mind. Will anyone in the media dare make a comment?

Spot on, Sue.

Would the Pies have made up their lie if they thought the MRP was a rock solid judicial organisation that always gets it right? No, they figured (rightly) the judicial process is a fiasco raffle and they may as well cook up a ridiculous lie, roll the dice, cross their fingers and hope to scam a result.

MRP: joke.

Collingwood: liars & cheats. Pants on fire!

Malthouse has ZERO credibility. He is a liar. He lied about his comments on Stephen Milne and now he has lied about Addam Maric.

Take this from his article in the Australian:

This whole "cheating" incident has been blown out of proportion. Some media people have turned a molehill into a mountain by singling out the player and my comments. He was never named, as I wasn't specifically talking about him.

BULLTISH.

Not sure he lied about Milne. It did not sit well with me, however, that he admitted never contacting Milne directly to apologise to him about the incident. Everyone makes mistakes and says things they later regret - but the better people out there are the ones who can admit their mistakes and apologise to those affected.

But to say Mick Malthouse has no credibility is laughable. He is a legend of the game in anyone's book.

Who cheated more? Stupid question, because neither of them cheated at all.

Maric legitimately thought he kicked the ball, and even if he didn't, he was entitled to 'appeal', if you will. It happens all the time. Players saying they touched the ball before the goal umpire disagrees. Players saying they handpassed the ball when they're called for a throw. It happens.

Thomas hit Jones in the head. That happens too. It's not cheating.

he lied and admitted he did by claiming that he like Winston Churchill lied for the greater good

Appearing before a judiciary afterwards and declaring that, hand on heart, you were attempting to punch the ball, while simultaneously tracking said ball with your eyes and head as it moves 5+ metres past you, is cheating.

Hand on heart? He was making an argument. Good on him if it works.

Far out people. That is not cheating. That is attempting to show up a system. If he had succeeded, it would not have been his fault, it would have been the system's. The fact that he didn't shows that we don't have place in the game for people to make weak excuses for poor decisions. That does not mean he cheated.

Gasp. Modern morals have reached a new low when lying just because you can within some 'system' is considered acceptable by anyone.

Now if he was trying nobly to 'show up a (corrupt) system', (corrupt as it is) it might be acceptable, but he wasn't. He was simply trying to get off. Very sad.

And some people want this Clown to Coach, above someone like Roos,,, or Matthews!!!

MnM is a tried hard 'Barassi',,,, trying to be a Visionist like RDB. What a joke. He wanted or wants to have 6 interchange players in a team.. How are we supposed to make the grounds big enough to stopp the 'Presses', 'Torrential Floods' and Zones.

I beleive Malthouses claim that Maric is a cheat is despicable.

Moderators, remove that! Like you removed my last comment. What is with with you? I wasn't using any names before. And I was not as candid.

All Mick Malthouse does is exaggerate how grossly overpaid these football experts and how duplicitous/pathetic their behaviour is - definitely

not what society should be looking upto as acceptable or commendable.

To say " we have a very, very serious obligation to the game"...

in the cirucmstances where if you claim for a goal, but don't get it, what do you lose for not claiming it??.... nothing

Thomas claimed it wasn't an intentional hit, not once but twice with full knowledge largely because what would he lose if he didn't lie twice??? nothing.

Some footy twits and their ethics are only for entertainment value. Remember its only a game and of little meaning beyond the odd rush of blood every weekend.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
