Tom has put off contract negotiations until the end of year.

Tom hasn't signed anything.

These are the only things Tom has done in this saga - I can tell you this because he told us this.

Well within his rights to do this (hell, we are doing it with our coach).

The rest of it is us, and our tilting at windmills, except these windmills are rumours.

Rumours spread and fanned by those around the GWS franchise.

They want this reaction.

They want supporters to yell pathetic, hurtful nonsense at Tom down the race, on the boundary, in the street.

Wake up and realise that you are reacting to the rumours and not the actions of player.

Speculate all you like but if you hear a Melbourne supporter hang sh!t on the kid, you should make sure you support the player and not the rumour.

Nothing to add, just wanted to see this^ line get a second run.

Why does Scully owe Melbourne anything. If the shoe was on the other foot and Scully wasn't a good player, Melbourne would delist him and never see him again. Players don't owe their clubs anything.

When players aren't up to it Melbourne delist them, but if the players dont think the club is good for them and choose to move on then somehow its considered disloyal?

Rumor has it that the mfc are thinking about offering a 2.8 mil for 4 years. Read on one of the news sites.

Pretty massive. I'm thinking most of it will come in the first couple years while watts, trengove and co. are still young and paid accordingly, to keep us under the salary cap.

Oh thanks Freak for your insight into such a complicated issue

For those who think the club should give him an ultimatum that's fine, so long as you favor the dees potentially overpaying for what they may be able to get. The holdout is rational for all parties. I'd imagine if it had nothing to do with money scully would sign the dotted line tomorrow. So let's assume that gws will make an offer and then scull will inform the MFC of it and see if they can make a competitive offer. Anyone who sees such a scenario as unreasonable should hereby vow to never seek a different or better paying job for the rest of their working life.

This all hinges on the MFC being able to produce a competitive offer...whatever that exactly is for the parties involved

Thank god RobbieF isn't our contracts negotiator at the club. He'd be on his knees crying looking up and Scully saying why? why?

Every game of football the kid plays his value rises. Regardless of where he plays football next year and I have it on very good authority he has not signed and at present is not interested in GWS as a manager you would be telling him not to sign until the end of the year.

It doesn't bother me if he stays or goes to be honest. I like watching the kid play but i'd personally be more devastated if we kept him this year and they stole Trengove next year which they still can do.

If we keep Scully and have another year like this next year I think I might just have to burn down every media outlet

Tom Scully is old enough to understand that it's causing the club a lot of embarrassment and concern he is also old enough to understand that it is very disruptive to the players and the club. If it's money he wants then GWS win out so let's make the decision and get on with it. There are other players in his age group, who are as good, who have made their decision and have decided to stay and show some loyalty, all Tom has shown so far is he is interested in the financial side of things and nothing else. Good on him if he is driven by the Dollar but if that's the case I don't want him around the club because this will come back every time his contract is up for negotiation.

it says a lot to me about the man if this is the way he operates and i don't like what i see.

No. I actually admire Scully for sticking to his guns. He said he would put off a decision till the end of the season, and that is the status quo at the moment despite all the massive media speculation.

Destabilising the club? I disagree. My impression is that the club has been very supportive of Scully through his knee injury and with our media statements.

It has certainly tested our supporters but we better get used to it. Free agency comes in from 2012. If we make the finals in 2013-14, it could be with a very different side to the team against Freo today.

He got the tatts after being drafted.

Or maybe he (Dustin Martin) wore that nasty scowl to Barry Prendergast's psyche interview and didn't pass the MFC 'nice guy' test.

The question is who does GWS want as their marquee player? To think they would pay scully an ablett wage is a bit far fetched. Im sure they are after him no doubt, but their 2 million dollar man is Scott Pendlebury who only signed a 1 year extension. This would leave players like Scully, Palmer, Walker etc in the 600k-950k bracket. Scully WILL be in this bracket at Melbourne. Why would he leave?

Posted

Why does Scully have to be their "marquee player"? Can't they just want gun players regardless their marketing potential?

Don't kid yourselves. Tom will be a very good to great player and any club in the comp would have a crack at luring him if they could.

Yes but although they have a lot of money to spend, its not endless. Getting Pendlebury brings the the next rung of players on significantly less money.

There's Pendles AND Goddard as targets, both possibly at that Ablett-esque level of payment really.

No way they can do two Ablett-style contracts AND afford to get a raft of second-tiers like GC did.

It's the knee issue that poses some interest to me. I don't like to add any more fuel to the speculative fire but I wonder if this is a factor at all in Tom's decision?

If it has been identified as a potentially chronic injury that could limit the length of his career then it would be understandable that he would feel more inclined to accept, and indeed may seek to secure, a larger contract that delivers greater benefits in the short term.

This doesn't mean he will necessarily sign with GWS but would happily take an inflated offer from Melbourne by holding off till the end of the year. It may not even be something he would have pursued under normal circumstances but due to the GWS factor, he has been placed in a situation where exploiting his position is difficult to resist.

On the other hand, if the club was aware of this situation they may well be happy to play along with it quietly and keep playing Scully so that they can secure the best compensation deal as they know they catch match the GWS offer anyway and don't wish to make other players disgruntled.

Speculation is fun aint it? ;)

Brian Taylor just announced on Foxtel game day that, according to his mail, Melbourne wanted Scully to hold a 'clear the air' press conference two days ago ... but he refused.

His mail? He's sitting next to Alistair Lynch, from Scully's management team, in the commentry booth.

What are you saying?

I'm saying that at some point this morning, the boys asked Lynch if Scully was staying or going and he probably couldn't tell them but he did confirm that the club were keen for him to have a press conference so that all the nervous nellies (mainly contributors to this thread) are reassured. In classic Scully style he probably suggested that nothing had changed since last time he spoke to the press and that he didn't see the need to do it. I'm the aforemention 'nellies' will read something completely different into it!

What I take from that is that the club were keen for him to do something ... something on behalf of the club ... but Tom chose not to do it.

Once again ... Tom's interests > Club's interests.

To paraphrase what you've said there: "there's rumours about Scully, there are no rumours about Sylvia."

To summarise my response: "just as I thought: SFA".

Thanks for clearing it up.

You're not silly

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
