The Tom Scully Saga

Recommended Posts

AFL can't touch us on grounds of Judd precedence.

Why is there this suggestion that Carlton were somehow evading AFL rules with the Visy deal?

All Clubs are allowed to do this - there's even a specific cap on these types of arrangements!

The poorer Clubs just don't do it because they can't afford it.

So you're getting worked up over a hypothetical.

What if hypotheticals didn't exist?

String Theory would Suffice!! B)

I am not getting worked up at all, i would just like an indication of where the MFC sit in 4 weeks time.

As J Riv says just above, this is a very pivotal time in the clubs history. If Scully stays 45,000 members will sign up next year...IMO

Harry O'brien comes out of contract in 2012 .

Rumour has it that GWS want him and the filth want a first rounder .

Posting multiple times ranting about what should happen if he has signed with someone else is, in my view, getting worked up.

Why the arbitrary length of time? Why must the club say anything in 4 weeks? Why assume anything will change in the next 4 weeks to force the club to say anything other than what has already been said?

It's a pivotal time in our history, and you'd be stupid to think we're not doing things to try and keep him. But that's not what you said before - you said the club needs to be "strong on this," to which you still haven't explained what it means.

If the club makes finals this year we'll have 45,000 members next year, should the club come out in 4 weeks time and 'be strong" about making finals this year?

Let's lose the pessimism that has too long been part of this club. I am confident MFC will do enough to keep him. Wish he would sign earlier to end of this speculation and over the top reactions, but he doesn't have to and it makes sense, on his part, to wait until the end of the year.

The AFL investigated the Judd-Visy deal, and found it was within the rules. That is what I mean by precedence.

What are you talking about?? It's self explanitory. If you are in a muddle 45, i can't help you!! i have done a couple more generations of despair than you, so i do not wish to see another Absolute Gun leave before his peak even starts.

Too many have left our club to seek the ultimate prize.

Absolutely...at some stage the club has to make a stand...There is no point in us giving a signed GWS player game time on the MCG. We have to become really strong on this.

That said i am going to believe our coaches word at this stage.

I'm clearly not the one in a muddle.

Yes, because you're older than me, I must be fine with the prospect of a gun leaving

45HG16 makes it quite clear. If anyone is "muddled" it is you WYL. And bringing out the old chestnut of "I've done a couple of more generations of despair" statement to impose some sort of superiority or standover tactics of another poster doesn't wash with me or by my guess, anyone else. It's a pissweak response that doesn't answer 45's question.

True to form, whenever you are pulled up you revert to the "what are you talking about?" time and again.

But i didn't say that at all.....what i want to know is IF Tom has ALREADY signed a contract with GWS i think it is fair enough for the MFC to know.

I have never wanted to Force Tom to sign with us....i would hope he would see it as a good workplace.

But if infact he is at this stage playing under 2 contracts i would want to know, which is why i was interested in G Lyon's take

Not pure Rubbish at all 45.

He said he hasn't so there you go. No need to ask him about that.

For all those losing sleep over this, Watts was rumored to be going to the GC last year at the end of the season (Though to be fair nowhere near as much speculation as Scully has had) and he signed in the offseason.

I have faith he'll stay with us :) .

Paul Connors thinks the new CBA may not be agreed upon until December - what does this mean for Scully, and others waiting for the new agreement to be signed?

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-player-pay-deal-a-long-way-off/story-e6frf9jf-1226071304702

I still think there is merit in players waiting out the season before signing, even if the new CBA had been signed already, as their value can still increase.

This just adds a further complication to matters.

Also, finally an article not linking Scully to GWS, mainly because Scully isnt Connors client, but... he was happy to mention Taylor Walker and Palmer as being seemingly gone,

Is the rumour getting old? the names arnt as good at this stage as Goldcoast imo

December would make it very messy because players will actually be out of contract....Could help the MFC to get a deal done...

It sounds like GWS is throwing a hell of a lot of cash around.

Even with their concessions, I can't see how they could possibly have that much money to throw around.

At the bottom of the article Connors makes mention of Rich, Leuenberger and the Lions' salary cap struggles in recent years - which began with heavily back-ending contracts of guys like Black, Brown and Voss - all done by a bloke by the name of... Gubby Allen.

In regards to WARD, off topic but feel sad for him with his manager coming out and stating the facts, ie 400k extra etc with half a season to go..... At least the Scully talk is "rumour" his mates now know he may walk out etc

Remember that they have two years to poach players. That allows them to heavily front-end contracts to players they take this year and still have plenty to throw around next year. The majority of their list will be on basic beginner contracts so the distribution of the salary cap is skewed massively in favour of the players they are able to poach as well. These two factors allow them to offer obscene contracts to several players, with the bulk of the cash coming in the first year.

oh i understand the front end contract, over 2 years alright. Many Club players and administrators are going to have a lot of sleepless nights.

The Dogs are a club very vulnerable to all this pillaging...and if the CBA is not resolved till at least late in the year, it is going to be a most volatile off season...

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
