Who gets Judd?

There is still a question of whether Judd will play tomorrow night, but I am sure MFC will be planning for him as a definite starter. Who do we play on him?

I would love Rohan Bail to play on him if uninjured - would be great to watch and a sharp learning curve for Rohan.

Jordie McKenzie. Has the discipline to stay with Judd, and has the strength to not be overwhelmed by Judds bursts, could hurt Judd when we move forward, but does he have enough pace?

Aaron Davey. Would Bailey dare something like this?

Clint Bartram?

Nathan Jones?

What about Colin Sylvia going head to head? Would that rob us too much of his powerful and consistent forward 50 entries?

Thoughts?

Bartram for mine.

Now that it has been confirmed that Daniel Nicholson is playing, I have a feeling the job will be given to him.

He certainly seems to have the speed and engine.

Batram might be preoccupied with Garlett or Betts but I would go with him.

Moloney vs Judd at the clearances should be quite something.

Two elite clearance players.

My first choice would be Bail.

My 2nd choice would be Jordie. Returning from a significant lay off, does he have the legs to go with a player of Judd's calibre at the moment.

My 3rd choice and the one i think they will go with is Jones - Has been in really good form and although i remain uncertain about his ability as a run with player he would love the challenge and with Bail out and Jordie maybe not quite ready he is the best we have got.

First game player on a dual brownlow medalist?

I thought we stopped tanking years ago?

It will be Jones.

That wouldn't be tanking.

What is Judd's biggest weapon? His pace and engine.

Nicholson could match him in this regard better than Jones, better than most on our list.

Nicho has done tagging roles and has the defensive aspect of his game developed by virtue of playing on a HBF.

Sure, he'll get eaten alive in terms of experience and probably strength, but I think having a pacy player to run with him is the best option.

Other than Nicho, I think we also could go for Blease (much less likely).

Given Jones has had zero clearances and 2 tackles last week, I don't really see how he could line up on Judd and do a decent job.

hard to get a clearance playing on the half back flank

first gamer on Judd, sure, simple order, go out and make sure he doesn't get the ball. Don't worry about getting it yourself. Its a team game and a role would be great and it's one job so for a first gamer easy to follow. Would most likely give away a few free kicks but at least judd will never be alone and will to contest.

Then again we need someone of murphy and gibbs as well.

we need to put elite runners on Judd...i would put jones on him...believe he got the job last time...i think other players could play a role...i wouldn't mind putting morton, jordie mckenzie and gysberts on him for experience.

We weren't tanking when DB put Stef Martin on Jonathan Brown in his first game.

I hope Nicho lines up on him.

Anyone who is prepared to knock his head off or jump on his "sore" leg.

Judd & Murphy - Nicholson, Mkenzie or Jones

Gibbs - Petterd or Jetta

Would be thinking that Gysberts will get the gig, but wouldn't be surprised if Nicholson is thrown to the wolves.

My other smokie would be Morton to come in and tag him, but I honestly think it will be Gys.

I have been thinking latly that judd does major damage in the last quarter when his Tag cant run with him any longer. Might be good to use our sub to pinch hit in the last quarter with a hard tag on Judd to negate any influence.

However since Dan N said he might be the sub (see MFC webiste) might be to much to ask the young man.

But if Judd is leg sore he night be hiding in the forward pocket I reckon Barts with get the gig.

We'll need 2 to tag Judd. I'd try Jones and one of the new boys.

I thought you said elite runners???

The issue with Judd is his pace over the first 20 metres. Jones has endurance not standing pace. Having said that I would be rotating players on him like McKenzie and Gysberts.

Batram might be preoccupied with Garlett or Betts but I would go with him.

Agree on Bartram. Moloney lacks the acceleration to stop Judd

How easy for the kid??? Simple instruction for a simple job!!! Nullify a "once in a generation" midfielder in your first game. There you go son, just poke your head above the trench.

In 2008....I think we were tanking hard...

Am I the only one that thinks Gysberts would get absolutely buried in a tagging role on Judd? Not only do we potentially sacrifice one of our best clearance mids, but Gys has nothing like the pace required to run with him I don't think.

I would think Jordie will have first crack, but given the discussion around Nicholson, what about Evans being rotated also? Is quicker than Gys and we wouldn't be losing out as much in the clinches.

Agreed.

I don't like it. Maybe for a quarter as an exercise in "this is what you have to replicate in your own career", but I actually would like to see Morton brought back in and given the task on Judd.

Has elite endurance and it will be good for him to do a defensive job, given that he has been lacking in this area of his game. I think Judd is also an easier match up for him than Goodes.

I said Gysberts for 2 reasons;

1. He tagged Ablett in his very first game last year, and while he didn't defeat Ablett, he wasn't disgraced.

2. No-one beats Judd, so why not put a guy that can find plenty of his own footy. Judd will take him to the contests, and if he isn't accountable, Gys will get a number of possession (like he did last year against Gaz).

The other option might be to throw Joel Mac on him. 100th game, tough, not sure about pace (that's not saying he hasn't got it, just that I don't know!). The games that Judd struggled in last year where against the likes of McPhee, where a lot of physical pressure was placed on him. Joel Mac started the game last week tagging Goddard, but had to be shifted off him swhen Tappy did his hammy. If he has the pace, it might not be a stupid idea.

Depending on where Gibbs plays, I'd give Petterd that job (only if Gibbs is half back).

Both have been outstanding players to date but Judd is even better than Goodes. I am thinking Morton should be rotated for a quarter on Judd. I actually think Judd will be almost impossible to shut down for 4 qtrs.

Anyone for Martin to dominate the ruck??

Martin had something like 15 hitouts to advantage last week, which is Sandilands-esque. He has really stepped up in Jamar's absence.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
