WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

The thing that sucks here is that the father/son rule is intended to get kids to clubs where their fathers played.

It is designed such that clubs don't pay 'overs' for the kids of such players.

With pick 3, we should be able to snag a bullet proof 10 year player for this club irrespective of the 'father/son' rule.

That we may have to use pick 3 on Jack Viney makes a mockery of this rule.

Well said. Watch the AFL tweak it a la the Judd Visy rule once this trade/draft period is over.

I would not pay $800.000 for a house valued at $600.000 - just because I really like it.

Similarly I would expect that our club wont pay out a pick #3 for a player who is ranked somewher around #8.

Tambling was rated as number one, as were Watts and Scully. Morton was rated number four. The point is, pre-trade ratings mean very little after a year or two.

If Jack wasn't a F/S selection I doubt we'd be having this conversation as neither GC or GWS would be looking at him as their first selection. I would like to think however that we would and if we were then we'd have to take him at 3 or 4 because he wouldn't be there at 13 or 14.

A club with some steel would let it be known that they will NOT be using #3 of Viney. If the Gold Coast want to let Viney do his apprenticeship with them (as Scully did with us) then lets have the balls to let them. If jack still loves us by late 2014 then he can nominate for the draft on a one year contract requirement.     It would be a brave club that would risk that would take him then.

Jacks serious years will be 2015 forward - its a tough business - no big deal if he shapes up elsewhere.

Meanwhile we get the 3rd best pick in the imminent draft & Viney back in 18 months.

Call the bluff & MORE IMPORTANTLY dont allow the message that we are a weak club who geneflects to a bluff.

Get some steel MFC.

Hey Todd. That article [yesterday H/Sun] where your son faced down the club was professionally dumb.    You & your kid get respect. Try giving it back.

need a magnifying glass to read this.

The general consensus is that after Whitfield the next group are even and different clubs would have them in different orders. Viney is acknowledged as the best inside mid in the draft and Joe Daniher rates him as the best junior he has played with, or aqainst.

I understand why you're speculating that this would be the case, but the facts are we don't know.

So true. My opinion is most of the push for GWS or GC to bid on Jack is from other clubs and repeated ad nauseum by journos (generally [censored] who have an anti-MFC agenda) who want to see us pay overs as they perceive it helps them by each pick after ours being technically one better. The benefit I think for the other clubs is very marginal though.

I understand that, but I still think that there are others that the franchises would look at before him, we'll never know though will we.

If it was up to me and we had the number one pick I'd still take him but I'm not sure that the other clubs rate him as high as that.

3 days....

So when we get Viney can we scrub all the Viney threads which are 90% speculation and start off fresh, with a new Viney thread, heralding all that is our new savior, or what?

Is it just me or is this a storm in a teacup? Neither of the clubs before us will choose Viney as their first pick but surely if they do we take the second best kid in the country - simple. Can you really imagine the head recruiter of GWS explaining to the board how they passed on the second best kid in the country to spite another team. It's not going to happen.

Boom, GC set to pass on JV allowing Melbourne to take him at pick 26

Adding to the previous post regarding Melboune trading pick 13 + Martin for Dawes and Rounds; here is the reason.

Gold Coast are set to pass on Viney, allowing Melbourne to take Viney with their second round pick.

The second round pick Melbourne have, was also linked in a trade with Collingwood which would be a straight swap for Dawes for Melbourne's second round pick.

But given Melbourne can now pick up Viney with pick 26 instead of pick 3, they will now contemplate trading pick 13 + Stef Martin to Collingwood in return for Dawes and Rounds.

No trading of first round picks please- we could get someone very handy there. Even if we get Viney in the second round, we need to squeeze all the quality we can out of this draft.

If they want Martin they can straight swap for Dawes. I think that's fair. No #13, and who the [censored] is Rounds?

And if we do get a host of gun young midfielders let's not crucify them at Casey for months on end. Play them. I still maintain Lucas Cook got progressively worse the more he didn't get a call up.

Can we just take the best player available at pick 3 please? Viney or otherwise. If GC or GWS bid on him and we believe there is a better prospect available at No.3, we must let him go and not be compromised.

I like this very much as it is great for the club and sees us getting our hands on hopefully 3 quality mids, 2 hard at it and 1 with some genuine spedd & class. However don't like the bit about Pick 13 & Martin to Pies keep it and target best kid available.

Still not sure on what is best on trading for pick in mini draft to get Hogan have seen him live and really liked him but every year kids pop up.

I am also against trading away Pick 13 for Dawes. Out of curiosity if JV is not nominated by Suns or Giants how about trading away our second round pick for an established player where does that leave us with JV

Bulldogs will then nominate him with 5 and we will have to use 26 (our next pick after 5) .

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
