Moving Newton

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember it, Newton was moved into the ruck(or was it the bench?), when he had 2 goals (should have been 3), was dominating th forward line, and playing with great confidence.

We were dominating, and getting the ball into the forward 50 repeatedly. I have no doubt he'd gave got another goal or two had he stayed forward.

Does anyone know the explanation for the move? Perhaps Martin needed relief. I'd have used Dunn in the ruck rather than take away Juice's momentum.

North must have been rapt to see him moved away from the goals.

It was a poor move. To ask a guy like Newton, who was finally showing something with defensive pressure and goals, to perform a role he doesn't play at Casey was a poor decision. Should have been Dunn.

Michael Newton does at least deserve a game for the next 2-3 weeks after his first Quarter, he attacked the ball & marked better than i have seen him do before in that first Quarter.

flashes in and out but overall just a frustrating player

will be back at casey soon and then kick 7 and people will then call for his promotion again

Because if, on your reckoning, Newton is slightly better equipped than Dunn, then he was slightly less likely to lose all the taps. But was was absolutely the case was that he was contributing more in his position than Dunn was in his, so it was a net loss and poor decision.

Yes it was a disappointing move at that moment. Dunn should have gone into the Ruck as he had just got himself reported for one of the most blatantly stupid acts i have seen in years...should get weeks for that.

It was a shame that Newton was moved...he was switched on up forward no doubt.

But its really splitting hairs arguing Newton vs Dunn. We were getting smashed in the ruck. And having Newton there was making less easier than it would have been with Dunn.

Still kicks goals in ressies and plays the occasional qtr of decent senior footy = he also did that early in his career as well

Drop him and get him off the rookie list. Dunn will be suspended, Garland is out for 2...Bail is out

Newton will get another chance this weekend. Dunn will be out for a while and according to VFL reports Gawn has put his hand up to play after a good display in the Seniors.

He played his best game on Sat, played the role asked of him and put in all day.

I don't think I stated anything harsh against Newton at all..........where have I bagged him??????

As I said, he along with many of his team mates did little after quater time.

He tried hard, no doubt...........I was sitting at the interchange area, and he was shagged when he came off, so no doubting his effort........to me he looked to be struggling with the pace of the game, probably because he hasn't played in the senior team for so long.......that's not bagging him, just syaing he will take a few games to get up to AFL level match fitness, and part time ruck fitness.

His first quater was good, but the opposition was also soft, so lets not say he has arrived after contributing in the first quarter!

And as I said, if Bate could ruck, Newton wouldn't have had a call up. Not harsh on him at all......I think Bate is a better forward and player than Newton. Newton just happens to have a good leap, and a little more back up ruck experience than Bate.

As a result, once Jamar is back, Juice will end up back at Casey.

To be fair to Juice, his impact in that first quarter was far beyond the impact many of our other forwards have had on a game (bar Jurrah and Green pre-2011).

If he turns it on for four quarters, he will kick 6 goals.

Juice will not kick 6 in a match, bc he only ever does the odd good thing in a match, and never consistently over the coarse of an entire match, let alone week to week.

He's just not a particularly good player, I never understand why people want him in the team. I think it's just because he's out of sight at Casey so people assume every time that he's suddenly become a great player while they weren't looking.

He should have held fire for 6 -10 more minutes and given newton another opportunity to score. At that stage he was killing it in the forward half. Easily his best quarter for the club. had Watts played that well we'd be licking our lips. Need to play Gawn and Martin next week.

His move to the ruck was a poor decision. If Martin can't ruck for 30 minutes I'll stand on my head for an hour.

I agree, you rarely see the likes of Barry Hall or other power forwards who are monstering the opposition defence moved into the ruck just because their side was 5 goals up. I thought Newton played it like the brute he should be until he got moved. Then he became his usual dithering self for the reminder of the game. Should have saved his energy for leads and busting packs. Dunn should have filled in for Martin quite adequately.

I know that there is seven years of frustration bubbling into some of the comments on this thread and there is no doubt they are well deserved. But Juice's first quarter was outstanding on the weekend. He led hard, bodied well, chased, tackled and did basically everything you could ask of a key forward.

It mey very well be that Juice will fail again but he's obviously got talent and has earned the right to play again. He has continually put his hand up at Casey and performed well enough on the weekend. If somebody else was crashing the door down then maybe he'd be the one left out but they're not.

I keep thinking back to Jamar every time I feel like writing him off completely.

Newton was in the ruck at the start of the second quarter. North had finished the first quarter kicking 3 goals in 4 minutes. The flow of the game had changed as the second quarter started and flowed harder in the 2nd quarter as North took over.. Maybe you just missed it.
