Out: Grimes (inj) Bate

In: Martin, Bennell

Just thinking though if Rivers is fit how does he not get a game?? LOL. I mean you really cant drop Warnock and i like him against Nth as they have a very tall forward line.

He applied great defensive pressure yesterday, particularly in the third quarter. I am not a fan of Bate's at all, but he deserves another week.

Particularly, even crucially in the early part of the game, ie the first qtr when we usually suck!

I reckon Martin would have been good on Tippett - who could have got more free kicks than he actually did.

Against the sh#t boners there will Hail instead of Tippett and Martin could just stay on Hail - in ruck or "resting" on the forward line.

Need to protect Mark Jamar, he is such a gun. And if Dunn is going to recapture the form of late 2010, he needs to go back to being defensive forward who kicks goals, rather than 192cm ruckman.

Martin brought back in for Bate perhaps?

Bennel second best on ground in VFL is great attitude to getting sent back to VFL, so if Grimes in injured...

Rivers is in the leadership group and is definitely best 18, so he comes straight back in

Morton needs to get in the best in the VFL for 2 weeks in a row before being re-considered

OUT: Warnock (unlucky), Bate, Grimes (Inj)

IN: Rivers, Martin, Bennel

I can't understand the impression given by some in this thread that Warnock is no good, but Bate 'deserves' another chance. Warnock did well enough for his first match, Bate did not. Dunn, despite limitations and inconsistency and a big mouth under that mo, is a more menacing player than Bate who has only one gear and can't hold the ball when it falls into his hands. I think that's why Green wouldn't handball it to him in the goal square after having shaped up to do so. I don't mind giving Bate another week to show something, anything at all, but would prefer to see a fleeter player in the side.

My changes would be Martin and Bennell for Grimes and Bate. And Martin only to give Jamar some rest and because NM have some heavy talls. Martin's a better defender than attacker.

I'd have thought the Crows had some pretty heavy duty talls too, however I agree that I don't want to see the Russian ground into the turf or worse still injured when he is exhausted

Hail Hale is now at Hawthorn. The guy we tried to get to MFC.

Bate is mobile in the same way that the Ford Edsel was mobile. He played his best football early on, when he could run in a straight line through the midfield. Since turning his body into a muscle-ball he's lost whatever skills and finesse he might have had. I wish I were wrong about him.

I was thinking more the Queen Mary liner B)

p.s. having said that if team balance allows I'd give him another week to redeem himself. Surely next time he can hold an uncontested mark

We should drop Garland...he was far to quite this week....LOL

If grimes is out...i say Rivers (if fit), Otherwise Bennell.

Conditions didn't suit Bate. I would like to see Bate stay in the side. We play at Ethiad next week so conditions should suit. North will try to bully us. we need bigger bodied players. He needs to play physical next week.

Love it! What a difference a week makes! LOL

Yeh. 2nd that. Bennell for some pace and silky skills to cut through the zoning etc at *&(*hed stadium for Grimes. Was unlucky to be dropped i think. Wasn't great but wasn't at the bottom either i didn't think.

I wouldn't be playing with the line up other than injury/match up requirements. Gotta send the right signals after such a solid win, just as you do after a shocking loss.

Bater needs 3 - 4 weeks at least in order to get a feel again of what's needed at AFL level. Players always say there's a big jump from VFL to AFL in terms of the speed with which everything/everyone moves (Lingy an exception lol....even tho he's one of my all time favs and a gr8 player regardless of speed! Love watchin that guy. Feel like i'm in a time warp back to the 80's!).

Guys what is it with Bennell back in!

The guy plays a half decent game for Casey and all of a sudden he is back in.

He has shown time and again he fails when the going gets tough.

North have always been too scary for us and after their thrashing on the weekend

they will be fired up next saturday.

Their tactic will be play the Dees hard early and they will fold.

It has worked for them for years and they will try it on again.

So why put Bennell back in,leave him at Casey for me.

Agree. When you get dropped you need to go back a show consistent form over mutiple weeks. You can't go back play 1 game and get re-called. North will be looking to bounce back and have the wood over us so I'd rather see us stick with the mature bodies. If Grimes is out, (which he will be) bring in Macdonald... we lose a bit of run but we need his strength. Ideally Nicholson would be a good replacement based on his form but unfortunatly he's a rookie. If Grimes is sidelined for a while though this maybe the opening for him to be upgraded with a long term injury.

Matty Warnock won't go. He's the kind of player coaches love, because he's built like a man mountain and has pretty good leg speed, and he always makes a contest. I get the impression Bails loves him as well. He's fourth choice tall at the moment because he doesn't provide any drive, but as Rivers is out injured (and I'm assuming he won't be available next week) then Warnock will remain in for his defensive skills.

So for me:

In: Macdonald

Out: Grimes (inj)

Only the mandatory change, and it's like-for-like. I realise Bate et al weren't flash, but dropping anyone from a team that won by 96 points is unnecessarily harsh, and I'm not sure any changes would add that much value anyway. I'd consider Newton for Bate perhaps, but it's a stretch. I actually thought Dunn wasn't dreadful in the ruck; competed better than I thought he would anyway.

I'm hesitant to upset the team balance that much by making non-like-for-like changes like bringing Martin in, despite the fact that I'm a fan of his. Don't want to disrupt the successful formula.

And in defense to Matt Warnock, so he bloody should.

Read my post DC - I questioned the logic of his opinion of Warnock.

Ah HaHaHa, One change for me this week. Someone in for Grimes injured. Maybe some support for Jamar?

Totally agree, no idea why everyone wants him in. Has a pea heart and is so scared. Is flashy but never does enough. Leave him at casey long term. Would much prefer Macdonald or maybe even unleash a debutant. Bennell only saving grace maybe that he could be a good sub.

I'd like to send him to Tassie top play for 3 Months. They'd toughen him up. They still play the old fashioned way down there.

Leave him @ Casey to think a bit about how important it is for him, and if he wants to put his body in for the team, next time he gets the chance.

I do love all the player bashing posts. Some people are only ever happy when they can find fault. Personally I think that if you win by 90+ points you can let go and be a little happy with the way the team played.

Warnock did a bloody good job on Tippett, beat him out every time when it came to a footrace and held his own in the marking contests. I assure you none of our other backs would have found him any less tall.

Bate was hard and determined in the forwardline. His tackling pressure was a highlight. Sure, he only kicked one goal, but he had a hand in several more. It's a fact of life that not everyone in the forward line will kick a bag every week. He served his purpose in applying heavy pressure and preventing them from running the ball out of defense.

Once again I'll say the obvious. You don't change a team that wins by that much. Grimes out if he's injured. Replace him with Joel Mac or perhaps another running mid. Other than that leave the team alone and see if they can do it again.

In:Bennell,

Out: Grimes(inj)

I thought Bater played his role today, he presented and made a defender chase him on the lead, and created an opening behind him, I was quite surprised at half time when it showed he had only a couple of touches, i thought he had played a much better role than that.

I'll just agree with you and save writing anything lol.

Out: Grimes Trengove

In: MacDonald Martin or Newton (as much as I don't rate him we simply need to give Jamar some support and with Norths talls we need coverage).

[OUT - Grimes, Dunn

IN - Bennell, Martin

I can't believe this and other posts.

We beat Adelaide because we dropped three soft players Bennell, Martin and Morton.

Now you guys want to bring them back

Bate had poor stats but everyone obviously missed what pressure he applied . eg During the last quarter

in the forward pocket he made three repeat tackles.

We should be playing those that have a go and only promote the three softies when they show hardness with casey

Bate was slow and ineffective. Got caught with the ball in defence which led to a crows goal. Clearly our worst on ground.

We would be better off with Morton in his stead.

Out Grimes, Trenners, Bate

in Bennell, Martin, MacDonald

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
