Far too many players are given elite status when they don't deserve it

Judd is Elite , Swan is Elite , Ablett is Elite, Sylvia is not

Fact is there is no Melbourne Player worthy of Elite status so far

Consistency is an important ingredient when giving out such accolades

I couldn't disagree more.

Some of Sylvia's best games have been in a loosing side, with not much help from team mates.

Spot on Thomo. I distinctly remember a game against Hawthorn a couple of years ago where he got three Brownlow votes (30+ posessions and about 4 goals) in a game we lost by about five goals. Single handedly kept us competitive until late in the game. Wouldn't call him a front runner at all.

That said, he is also inconsistent and undeserving of the "elite" tag for the time being.

Pavlich and Judd have been elite through their whole careers. Judd has done it on his own for the last few years, and Pav has done it on his own the whole time he's been in the AFL. Not good examples. But your point is pretty sound.

I hate to be 'positive' re: Sylvia, it's not something you would really find on here at Demonland too often, but without Sylvia, without a bit of class and polish, our team wouldn't be as effective without him.

To say that he was "quiet" when the pressure was on in the first, I find astounding. Sylvia Saint backed this up with facts. The pressure applied by our players was applied throughout. Great 4 quarter effort.

Some of the comments in this thread would suggest some will never be happy with his output, purely by the fact he "didn't deliver" for them in his first few years. Ouch.

But I'll remain positive and be content with the thought he das delivered a great deal in the last few years on a much more consistent basis.

This post highlights a consistent demonland problem....memories of the past tainting opinions of the now. Footballers change. Some progress rapidly or hit the ground running...Jack Trengove, Jordan Gysberts. Most (not all) get better year to year, but too slow for some. Witness Brent Moloney, Nathan Jones, and dare I say it....Jack Watts. Some don't really improve, and get cut...Brad Miller, Paul Johnson.

To begin with, I stated that Col's form was up and down this year but put forward some stats which are quantifiable and important. (As opposed to kicks, handballs etc)

I only put forward those comparisons with Judd's stats to show Col's effectiveness with the ball.

Some people just misconstrued what I was trying to put forward hence my question mark at the heading of the post.

This is what Garland had to say about Sylvia today and is basically what I was trying to put forward.

“His score involvements are right up there in the AFL, so Col just needs to bring that every week. He’s really inspiring the way he goes about it.
