I am continually re-assured we are in very capable hands when i look at our drafting, and the professionalism with which we make decisions. Everyone this year expected us to go for young up and comers, preferably tall forwards - and we did in the National Draft. The surprise was Robert Campbell. I know he has a history of dodgy knees, but he was a number one ruckman in a premiership winning team. If he is back to his 2008 form this year, it opens up all sorts of possibilities for us which i think could propel us from a marginal top 8 proposition to a top 4 contender.

Mark Jamar has done a fantastic job in re-inventing himself into a premier all australian ruckman, and is clearly in our top half dozen players. BUT, he is much more than that. Anyone who saw him take the Hawks backline apart 5 or so years ago when he kicked 6 goals knows he has the potential to be a Paul Salmon like force in the goalsquare. If Campbell can return to his 2008 form, and i know it is a bit "if", we would have hit a huge jackpot. Jamar is not only one of the best pack marks in the AFL, but also probably the Demons' straightest and longest kick for goal. IMO he is potentially an 80 - 100 goal forward with the right mid field.

Our forward line would look something like this:

HF: Wonna Jurrah Watts

FF: Green Jamar Petterd

With interchange of Bennell, Sylvia, Davey and Dunn.

I would suggest one of the best and most potent in the League.

Jamar's certainly increased the length on his kicks, but he used to only kick it about 35 to 40 metres. He's certainly not our longest, accurate kick. He has however become an accurate setshot from 30 to 40 out. There's no way he'll kick 80 to 100, but he could chip in with 20 to 30.

Pretty sure I remember e25 quoting himself as having wanted Robert Campbell in the PSD a few months earlier than that draft itself, so he must like RC as a player.

Personally I'm not sure about Jamar permanently up forward and I'm not even sure FF is really a weakness for us to the extent we'd want to take an AA ruckman out of the ruck.

When did Jamar kick 6 against Hawthorn?

I thought his highest number of goals in a match was 5 against Carlton at the tail end of 2009.

Jamar is now a power ruckman which is a major requirement in developing a premiership team.It is in the guts that the need to dominate takes place. Jamar will play havoc more reguarly playing(whilst resting on the forward line).Campbell, I agree will be a beauty. The right person at the right time enabling Gawn(2nd tallest ruckman whom may become the tallest) to develop along with Spencer and Fitzpatrick. I can tell you Fitzpatrick really came on last year when given the role of No1 ruckman at Casey. Back to the thread- we would be robbing Peter to pay Paul in this proposal. However, any thing is possible.

These days 40-60 goals would be considered a successful seasons return for these types and I think Jamar could easily manage 40 if he played forward. Campbell hasn't even played yet so we should not get ahead of ourselves with "what if's" . Jamar 80-100 goals in a season.... hehe pull the other one! He won't be doing that so don't get your hopes up!

Jamar will be our no. 1 ruckman with minimal time down forward.

It'll be R. Campbell that I believe will be our ruckman that'll spend the most time in the forward line (ala PJ).

That's true. i think in the second half of last year our conversion rate was second to none. That is why i qualified my comments about Jamar being a 80 -100 goal forward only if we had an elite midfield - and i think we are getting there as well as an attacking half back line with Grimes and Frawley.

Of course this is all speculation, until we see it unfold in march-april. The exciting thing though is we have such an endless succession of exciting, quality combinations the potential is endless.

IMO Fitzpatrick does not yet have the bulk to be an AFL ruckman, although i agree his potential as a ruck forward is good. His kicking for goal though currently is not at the elite level which it would need to be to get him to AFL level.

Not likely that he will be moved after becoming an all australian ruckman. Yes he will spend more time forward this year due to the interchange rules and hopefully Campbell comes on well to help with this, but Jamar will not be there any longer than is required for him to rest and have another crack in the middle. He has an elite level tank too and a willingness to push himself to contests. I love the big hairy Russian...

I have the same thoughts in mind but I would be looking at it

as a more tagging in/out tactic. Jamar loses his opponent and drifts

forward marks and goals. RC goes in to pick up Jamar's opponent

contest the tap after the goal. Jamar is then in a position to present

for the next contest. I dont believe that it will be more than 5-10 mins

total per quarter. Also RC will free up Jamar to be a kick behind as he can contest

the boundary inside f50.

Jamar will play forward, but he's certainly not a forward.

While he can be handy up forward, he wouldn't etch out a career as a power forward in the AFL IMO.

The comparison with Neitz is off too - pace, kicking, etc.
