I'm wondering if the senior players were perhaps instructed to give the new guys a hard time? Something like what they do to new recruits in the army to break them down and make them easier to train perhaps? From this report it sounds like the new guys really got hammered both physically and psychologically today, and I can't imagine that that would have happened randomly in a well-run club. If senior players were doing that to the juniors off their own bat it would be more along the lines of bullying and we'd probably be seeing a pretty big push to eradicate it. From what we've heard at least two young guys copped pretty impressive sprays while another was (probably) hit hard enough to end his training session. Hope the coaches know what they're doing.

I had similar some thoughts Ralph. All about setting standards from day one, so that the recruits appreciate that they are now in the big league, and know what is expected at the highest level.

Whether or not Beamer did what was reported I don't think that leaders should be critical of others and attempting to make them feel down. Leadership is the opposite - praise and support. (Been on too many lovey dovey courses)

Feel pretty confident that Beamer is the calibre of bloke who'd have sorted it out after training. Don't mind hearing about a bit of white-line fever. There's plenty we don't hear about.

Great report enjoy reading about how were travelling. My only concern is shifting to Casey for the summer. I feel we have a good thing going at AAMI Park. No offence to anyone i couldnt care less if we sever ties with them. Too long of a drive yo get there for them I say.

Thats most of the team mate listing players who already make a big impact in the side. I think priority one should be just getting the players like Wonna, Jurrah & Grimes through a full preseason who haven't before. I'd like to see some players like Blease, Tapscott & Gawn have any impact and just get on track!! Heres hoping some luck for the boys

I wouldn't be too concerned with Cook, probably had the wind knocked out of him. And as for Beamer, he's an aggressive player and one that reacts. He'd hate being shown up by a kid. Probably just wanted to put him in his place and give him what for - being a non-full on exercise. Most likely would have had calm words with him off the track if he had any leadership ambitions.

Tapscott is one of the few players that continues to work away from the main group. He is a tank, very easy to spot on the training track. He was running pretty well and looks okay, I guess they don't want to take any chances after his first year was ruined with injuries.

Be interested to know what the situation is with Tapscott. He had that injury towards the end of the season with Casey, but thought he'd be over that now. It's just that with all these training reports, I don't think anyone has yet mentioned that he was working with the main group, so wondering what's going on. Maybe just management, but he's one I was kind of hoping would be ready to "step up".

The drills he had been doing included tackling and were fairly physical. It is possible he took a hit from a bigger player and it shook him up. As I said, there was a bit of aggro out there and most of the younger blokes were under pressure and received the odd hard word from more senior players. I'm pretty sure that after about ten mins of sitting down one of the trainers gave him some tablets (some sort of pain killers?). Either way he didn't resume training and sat for a long time looking pretty down right beside the training group. I didn't see him after that. I couldn't give you any further information.

thanks for teh detailed update. Perhaps he was just shot from the lift in intensity and he got some glucose/hydration tablets.

How do you see the coaches performing? Especially Todd Viney, how is he fitting in?

At least he's training - that's better news than last pre season where he was out for 4 months with the hip injury. An earlier report in October this year suggested he wasn't satisfied with the penetration in his kicking. He also copped a shoulder injury in our last game at Casey. He was running with the main group on 19 November but spent most of his time with the 'graduated return-to-work' group. Sounds like the club is just being cautious.

The participation rate seems to be much better at this stage compared to December 2009 (touch wood). The only question marks in Bhima's report were Gysberts and Bail. Gysberts was also in the 'GRTW' group on 19 November while Bail was restricted to walking the boundary line. Perhaps he still has issues with the quad injury from last season.

This time last year we lost Wonna with a hamstring and Jurrah had a hand injury; Blease and every ruckman except Martin was on a modified or very resticted training programme; Watts was in and out with his back, and Garland was just out.

Be interesting to see them this Friday afternoon at Casey. Cam Schwab notes that the MFC grew out of a stadium, not a suburb, and we don't have the supporter base location that exists with the likes of Essendon, Hawthorn and Geelong. There are roughly 3 growth corridors in Melbourne; one that goes out to Craigieburn; one thru the Werribee area, and one through Cranbourne and Pakenham. All these regions have lots of young families with kids, and we have the lowest supporter base amongst kids in the league. At the moment we need them more than they need us, but hopefully we can build a supporter base like the Saints have done with the Frankston - Moorabbin region. Setting up a link with Casey is a no - brainer.

It's also interesting to note the reaction to words like 'spitting' and 'tears' in the reports. I'mot concerned provided it's addressed quickly. We have 46 guys fighting for 22 positions so it's not a tea party. They will cop much worse treatment when they go to Adelaide oval or Subiaco.

Good post DD DDC. Would love to just be a team at the G, even being in the Sth East but it is very important we grow that supporter base.

Success will help and bring on more followers, but if we can consolidate in an area such as this, while successful, it may well give us a larger supporter base well into the future.
